Chapter 5

The next morning, Beethoven woke up in this second day of the new usual... sleeping under a porch, stuck with a demon dog outside wanting to destory anyone in his path.

Beethoven lifted his head up, and looked to the car seeing Donna with Tad. But there was only one problem... Tad was having a seizure!

"Oh, no..." Beethoven frowned in helplessness as he watched. "Not now. Please..."

Donna opened the car door with her son in her arms, about to make a run towards the house. But suddenly, Cujo came running out of the barn barking, forcing Donna back in the car.

Beethoven tried to get up and help but he was still very much in pain from his injuries.

Donna finally managed to get Tad breathing normally again. Beethoven watched as Donna tried singing a song to Tad, sensing her impatience and panic.

"What are we going to do?..." The St. Bernard thought to himself, knowing if they didn't get out of here soon it'd be too late to save themselves.

A little while later, Beethoven had dozed off for a bit when he was awoken by the sound of an approaching car. It was a police cruiser, apparently here to investigate the place.

The officer got out of his car, noticing the busted Ford Pinto covered in blood. He was about to radio it in when he heard a noise come from inside the barn. Beethoven watched the officer close the door and walked towards the barn.

"STOP! DON'T GO IN THERE!" Beethoven came running out towards the officer as fast as he could, trying to warn him.

The officer turned, seeing the St. Bernard come charging at him and in fear pulled out his gun, thinking Beethoven was rabid due to him looking messed up with all those bite wounds. Beethoven froze in place as the officer was about to shoot him.

That's when Cujo launched his surprise attack, coming at the officer and knocked the gun out of his hand. Donna woke up from the noise and looked to see Cujo attacking the officer in the barn. She tried desperately to open the door but it was stuck.

Beethoven tried his best to help the officer, but it was obvious he was too weak and wounded to really do anything to the unstoppable Cujo. The officer was now hanging on to a beam until Cujo knocked him off before finishing him off.

Donna finally got the door open, only to have Cujo come back barking at her.

"Oh, no you don't!" Beethoven pushed his brother with all the strength he had, disracting him long enough for Donna to get back in the car.

Beethoven kicked some sand into Cujo's eyes, making the rabid dog yelp as that blinded him for a moment. Beethoven then quickly got under the police crusier to hide before Cujo went away again.

Tad was getting worse by the minute as he started having another seizure. Donna managed to revive him, although it was becoming more difficult for her to do so. Tad weakly kept saying how he wanted his daddy until Donna lost it with her son. But that was only because she knew she couldn't save him.

Beethoven frowned while listening to the mother and son, sensing that neither of them had much time left. And that theory was soon made clear only 2 hours later...

Beethoven was resting under the police crusier. His breathing was heavy and his wounds were starting to hurt more. As the poor St. Bernard layed there helpessly he started thinking about all that had happened the past two days. And worse... What would become of them in this possible, horrendous outcome?...

"Why?.... Why did it have to be like this?..." Beethoven thought to himself, shedding a few tears.

Beethoven then heard Donna's voice growing louder and louder as she was trying to wake up Tad but he wasn't responding. The boy was very dehydrated as this point.

"My God, I'm losing my baby..." Beethoven heard Donna whisper.

With no other option, Donna decided to take drastic measures into her own hands and got out of the car. Beethoven came out from under the police crusier and over to Donna, supporting her as she stumbled towards the house. But that's when they both stopped by what they saw...

There was Cujo, coming out from underneath the porch where he had been waiting for them and stared at the two.

Beethoven and Donna both knew if they were to survive they could no longer run away and had to work together to take down Cujo.

Donna ran over to grab this baseball bat she had spotted nearby while Beethoven protected her as Cujo came at them, barking and growling like a vicious monster.

Donna swung the bat at Cujo once she grabbed it, surprising him as he backed away.

"WELL, COME ON THEN!" She yelled to the rabid St. Bernard. Cujo just stared at the woman for a moment, growling.

Beethoven got in front of Donna, protecting her even though he was very weak.

"Don't do this, Cujo" Beethoven warned. "Don't make me have to hurt you"

But Cujo only growled at him, proving to have no emotions left. Beethoven stared directly into Cujo's eyes and could no longer see the sweet and gentle soul that was once his brother. That's when Beethoven finally yet heartbreakingly accepted that Cujo was gone and this was now a mindless, killer monster he was facing.

Beethoven prayed it would never come to this, but he willingly charged at Cujo as the two brothers went head to head fighting each other.

Cujo soon had Beethoven on the ground and that's when Donna hit Cujo with the bat, using all the strength she had. Cujo growled, leaving Beethoven as his attention was now on Donna.

Donna gave Cujo a couple more good whacks until the top of the bat broke off. Donna stumbled and fell to the ground, giving Cujo the perfect opportunity to finish her off.

"NO!" Beethoven bit Cujo's back leg, tripping him as he fell on top of Donna and let out this painful yelp.

Donna cried as Cujo fell onto her, believing she was done for but soon found the rabid dog unresponsive. She rolled him off of her and got up. That's when She and Beethoven both noticed the broken bat impaled into Cujo's stomach, which had presumably led to his demise.

Donna grabbed the officer's gun and was about to shoot Cujo. But then she saw Beethoven give her the pleading eyes as if telling her, this rabid beast was still his brother and he wanted to say goodbye.

Donna nodded in understanding, leaving the St. Bernard and went to go take her son into the house. After Beethoven watched Donna take Tad into the house he looked back at Cujo.

He slowly came up to the now lifeless body and nudged it just to be sure... Cujo didn't respond. Beethoven stood there in silence, mourning the loss of his brother. He soon lied down, resting his head on top of Cujo's back as he shedded a single tear.

"Goodbye... brother..."

Suddenly Cujo rose up, revealing to still be very much alive, pushed Beethoven to the ground and chraged towards the house. Beethoven was in shock that his brother wasn't dead, but quickly got up and ran towards the house as he heard Cujo break through a window.

Beethoven came up to the window, looking in just in time to see Donna and Cujo face off.

Donna had brought Tad into the house in an attempt to revive him with water... But it was already too late. Donna grabbed the gun on the table, pointing it directly at Cujo and fired the shot.
