Part 7

Wednesday, October 28th, 1925, 10.04am.

Scott and Suzy have headed back to town along the train track and are heading out of the train station towards courthouse square.

SUZY
Well the iPhone isn’t at your Great-Great Grandparents’, or whatever they are, so the only other logical place is the police station. It must be there.

SCOTT
So what do we do? Just walk in and ask for it? If they’ve found it, they’re gonna want to know what it is. This is gonna be harder than I thought.

SUZY
I would bet that Inspector Strickland took home with him. I can’t see him keeping something futuristic like that in lost property at the station.

SCOTT
Good point, but I don’t fancy the idea of breaking into a police house to look for it though.

SUZY
The house won’t have any alarms or anything on it. They haven’t even been invented yet - I think.

SCOTT
We’ve would have to find out where he lives too. How are we gonna do that?

Inspector Roger Strickland makes his way out of a building near to the train station.

SUZY
Watch out, here he comes now. What a stroke of luck.

Scott and Suzy duck behind some boxes. Strickland gets into his car.

SUZY
Follow him and see where he goes.

SCOTT
I’ll meet you back here at the station in an hour or so. Don’t go too far or else I’ll lose you again.

SUZY
I miss not being able to use my iPhone or go online or anything.
SCOTT
Tell me about it. Catch ya later.

Scott jumps on his skateboard and skates behind the police car. He crouches down so as Strickland can’t see him. Strickland hears a noise as Scott grabs the car. He looks in his rear-view mirror but can’t see anything. He shakes his head and drives off.

Strickland pulls up at the Police Station and heads inside. Scott hides as he gets out.

SCOTT Damn.

Scott heads to a nearby telephone, and calls the operator.

SCOTT
Hi there, could you put me through to the Hill Valley Police Station please?

Scott listens to the response.

SCOTT
Okay thanks.

Scott is connected to the Police Station.

SCOTT
Hello is that the Hill Valley police station?

In the Police Station, the receptionist is on the other end of the telephone call.

RECEPTIONIST
Yes, yes. I will inform him immediately.

The receptionist hangs up. Strickland walks past with some files.

RECEPTIONIST
Ah Inspector Strickland, I’ve just had a telephone call saying there’s a disturbance at your house. You’ve to go home immediately.

Strickland looks puzzled.

STRICKLAND
Who made the call?

RECEPTIONIST
He said he was a neighbour of yours.
STRICKLAND
I’ll be back shortly.

Strickland rushes out of the station, into his car and drives off. Scott hangs on the back riding his skateboard again.

Strickland heads into his house and Scott hides behind a tree.

SCOTT
That’s the problem of where he lives sorted.

Scott keeps watch and sees Strickland in the window talking to his wife, 40-year-old Irene. Strickland emerges shortly after looking disgruntled and with his wife following behind, holding their baby son Gerald. She stands on the doorstep looking confused as to what’s going on. Scott notices Strickland now has the iPhone in his hand. Strickland looks all around to see if anybody’s looking before climbing into his car. As Strickland’s wife is watching, Scott can’t hang onto the back of the car before it drives off. Irene takes baby Gerald back inside.

IRENE
Come on Gerald, it’s time for your feed.

Scott checks the coast is clear before skateboarding off after the police car.

Scott makes it back to the train station where Suzy is patiently waiting for him. Scott’s still getting odd looks for skateboarding around in 1925. Suzy gets up when Scott arrives on the scene.

SUZY
How did you get on?

SCOTT
I found out where Strickland lives, but the trouble is, he’s guessed something is going on and has taken the iPhone with him. I think he’s gone back to the Police Station with it.

SUZY
He’s definitely the one who has it then. That’s a start. All we’ve have to do now is get it back off him then.

SCOTT
Easier said than done, he knows something is going on. He’s not going to let it out of his sight.

Back at the Police Station, Scott is looks through the window and sees Strickland in his office. He can see the iPhone sticking out of his jacket.
SCOTT
Okay Suzy, you go around to the reception and ask to speak to Strickland. Keep him out of the office for as long as possible and I’ll climb in here and get it back.

SUZY
What shall I say?

SCOTT
I don’t know, just make something up.

SUZY
Okay, good luck.

In the Police Station reception, Suzy enters and goes up to the desk.

SUZY
Erm, hi, I’d like to report my handbag being snatched.

RECEPTIONIST
Oh my word, that’s terrible. Are you all right my dear?

SUZY
Yes, can I speak to Inspector Strickland about it please?

RECEPTIONIST
Yes of course, I’ll just see if he’s available.

Scott looks through Strickland’s window and sees the receptionist fetch him out. Scott forces the window open. It’s stiff but he manages to get it open. He climbs though and gets his shirt caught. He pulls it free but falls into the room knocking vase over.

Strickland stands with Suzy and the Receptionist. He hears the crash.

STRICKLAND
What was that?

Strickland rushes back into his office to find it empty and the window open. He goes to his jacket to find the iPhone still there. He looks round the room before heading back through to the reception taking his jacket and the iPhone with him. Scott is hiding under Strickland’s desk. He climbs out, goes over to where the jacket was and finds it missing along with the iPhone.

SCOTT
Damn it!

Scott quickly gets out of the window and heads to the front of the building. He sees Strickland speed off in his car. Suzy finally arrives out of the building.

SCOTT
What happened?

SUZY
I think he realises something’s going on. He said to the receptionist he’s got urgent business to attend to. I saw he had your iPhone. Did you have to make so much noise going in there?

SCOTT
It was an accident. You wait in the square, I’ll see if he’s gone home.

Scott skates off on his board.

Scott catches up with Strickland’s car outside the Western Union office. Scott creeps up to the door and listens inside.

Inside the Western Union office, Strickland has the iPhone in his hand talking to a Western Union staff member. The worker is about 25 years old wearing a patch on his uniform with Lou Caruthers sewn onto it.

LOU
Of course Inspector, I’ll get this shipped off for you straight away. If you could just fill out the address on this form. It’s an interesting object you’re sending; what is it exactly if you don’t mind me asking?

STRICKLAND
It’s none of your business young man and I would appreciate it if you keep your nose out of other people’s business.

LOU
I’m sorry Inspector, I was just curious as It’s never seen anything like this before.

Strickland ignores Lou.

STRICKLAND
I would like it shipped to New York as soon as possible.

LOU
Okay, okay, there’s a train later on around 5pm. It shouldn’t be a problem getting it on there today.

STRICKLAND
Just make sure it does. It’s extremely important that it doesn’t get lost either. Don’t leave it lying around.

LOU
I’ll make sure of it gets on it myself sir. I won’t let it out of my sight.

STRICKLAND
If you could send the shipping bill to me at the station, thank you very much.

LOU
Good day sir.

Strickland leaves the office. Scott ducks down an alleyway so as not to be seen. Strickland gets into his car and drives away.
Scott heads back to find Suzy.

SUZY
How did you get on?

SCOTT
I think we’ve got a little problem here.

SUZY
Not again.

SCOTT
Strickland’s parcelling the iPhone off to New York. He was in the Western Union place sorting out getting sent off. I heard it will be on a train today at five.

SUZY
What shall we do?

SCOTT
We have to track the package down when it gets to the station. The guy at the Western Union was told not to let it out of his sight there.

SUZY
Let’s get down to the station then.

Scott and Suzy sit outside the Hill Valley Train Station.

SUZY
Who would’ve thought that time-travelling could be so boring; sitting around a train station, for the best part of the day.

SCOTT
I’ve had better days. Hang on a moment... Yes here he is. That’s the guy from the Western Union.

Lou hands over a couple of sacks, which are the day’s shipments from Western Union to a train porter. The porter takes the sacks and puts them in a side office. Lou leaves.

When the coast is clear, Scott tries the door to the office and it is unlocked.

SCOTT
Yes! It’s unlocked! Keep watch. This shouldn’t take long.

Suzy keeps a look-out and Scott searches the sack. The porter starts heading back. Suzy whispers to Scott.

SUZY
Scott. Someone’s coming!

Scott goes to leave but sees the silhouette of the porter at the window. He looks round to hide. The porter throws a suspicious look at Suzy and decides to lock the office door before moving on.

Suzy whispers through the key hole.

SUZY
Scott. Is there any other way out? You’re locked in.

Scott tries the windows to see if they open.

SCOTT
No, that’s the only way. The windows don’t open. I’ll keep looking for the iPhone. Keep looking out for me.

Scott searches the sacks frantically.

Suzy looks down the train line and sees a clock which shows it’s nearly 5 o’clock. She then hears a noise. A locomotive makes its way into the station. People get off and the porter makes his way along to collect the sacks to put on the train. He passes Suzy and puts the key in the lock of the office door.

SUZY
Erm, excuse me sir. Do you have the time?

The porter looks baffled.

PORTER
There’s a big clock right above your head. Can’t you see it? It’s five o’clock.

SUZY
Oh yes, sorry. I didn’t see it.

Scott pulls a parcel addressed to a Professor Flintoff in New York. He tears the parcel open quickly to reveal his iPhone.

SCOTT
Eureka!

The porter turns the key in the lock to get into the office. Suzy lets a yelp sound out as she thinks Scott will be caught. The porter gives her another strange look and opens the office door and walks in. Suzy is shocked when the porter comes out with the sacks and not Scott. The porter walks over to the train. Scott, who’s hiding behind the door, slips out quickly and beckons to Suzy to follow him. The two of them make it out of the train station.

SUZY
I thought I was going to die then.

SCOTT
Just keep walking. We don’t want any more hassle.

Back at the Courthouse Square, Scott checks his iPhone to see if it is okay. He punches up Marty’s story to find out if anything changes. It’s all scrambled past when he visits 2015.

SCOTT
This looks worrying. We’d better make sure we get this back to Doc before we have any more trouble. It’s half past five now. Doc should be here by now to pick us up.

SUZY
Where is he?

A voice sounds from behind Scott and Suzy. They look round to see that Kid Tannen has once more appeared on the scene, along with his henchmen, Cue Ball, Matches and Zane.

KID TANNEN
Well lookee what we have here.

Kid snatches the iPhone from Scott’s hand. Scott swings round.

SCOTT
Hey!

Kid punches Scott in the stomach which makes him fall to his knees. The gang hold Suzy back.

KID
That’s for the other day.

Kid knees Scott in the stomach.

KID
And that’s for good measure. What’s this contraption you’ve got here?

Kid looks inquisitively at the iPhone.

Scott struggles and attempts to grab the phone back.

SCOTT
Give that back!

KID
Why what is it?

SCOTT
It’s for a professor. I’m vital he gets it today.

Kid punches Scott in the stomach again. Scott groans. Suzy struggles to help but is held fast by the Cue Ball and Matches.

KID
Well looks like this professor you know is out of luck then. It’s my birthday coming up, so I’ll take it as an early present from you. See you around suckers.

Kid walks away and jumps into a car followed by the gang. Suzy tries in vain to get the iPhone. She sees Halloween costumes on the back seat of the car.

SUZY
Halloween?

Suzy heads back to Scott who’s winded.

SUZY
Are you okay? They got away.

Scott holds his stomach and winces as he comes to his senses.

SCOTT
I’ll be fine in a minute. What is it with this town and Tannens? They get everywhere. How the hell are we gonna get my iPhone back now?

SUZY
I think I may have the solution.

Suzy points to a poster on a post. There is a Halloween get-together on Saturday, October 31st 1925, in the Courthouse Square for the residents of Hill Valley.

SUZY
I saw this poster the other day. There were Halloween costumes in the back of their car. I’m assuming they’ll be there. So if the rest of his family attend this, then the blacksmith’s house will be empty. We can simply go in there and find it then.

Scott thinks for a moment.

SCOTT
What if he takes it with him to the party?

SUZY
We’ll cross that bridge if and when we get to it.

Doc pulls up in his car. He sees the mess Scott is in.

DOC
What the hell happened to you? Did you get your computer back?

SUZY
We got the iPhone back after a bit of a struggle, but we’ve lost it again. We’ve just been jumped by Griff Tannen’s Great-Grandfather. He made off with it in his car.

SCOTT
He’s gonna pay when I get hold of him.

DOC
Great Scott! Something like that could cause serious changes to the future if we don’t get it back off him. I dread to think what would happen if a Tannen ended up with information on the future again.

SUZY
Again?

SCOTT
Yeah Kid Tannen’s son Biff ended up with a sports statistic book of the future. He ended up taking over Hill Valley, the law and everything.

Doc looks horrified remembering the horrendous ‘Hell Valley’ that was created after he returned from 2015 with Marty.

DOC
Yes and if we don’t get it back Kid could use all the information you have on it to become rich and powerful. The Hill Valley you return to could be a very different place indeed.
We’ve got to find out where he is.

SUZY
We can sort this out, but we’ve got to wait until Saturday night.

DOC
That’s okay because I won’t have the DeLorean rigged up to work until then.

SCOTT
Rigged up?

DOC
You’ll see…
