Chapter 26

Theo pov
"I don't want to go to work," I tell Alex. "ERIK SAW MY CLAWS. What the hell am I supposed to say? Oh I'm a werewolf. Huh. You weren't supposed to know."
Alex sighs and stops pushing me out of the house. "Just deny everything. Now," she spins me around, pushing me out of the doorway, "go to work."
I turn around to argue further but she slams the door on my face. I reluctantly head to work.
When I get there I ignore Erik the best I can. I wait for Evie but, she comes in 40 minutes late. Cam tries to talk to her, but I notice she is extremely stressed. I mean her life did change juristically.
A little while later Mimmi comes into the cafe. "Evie?"
Evie looks up. "Yes?"
Mimmi walks closer. "We met last night."
"You're one of them?" She backs away in fear. "Stay away from me." Erik takes notice of this.
"I'm a mermaid, not a vampire." I snort at that. "Please, I'm not here to hurt you."
"Do you have any idea what you've done? You've ruined my life!"
Mimmi glances at me and Erik. "I'm sorry."
"You turned me into a gill monster and all you can say is 'I'm sorry'?"
"I think I can reverse your transformation."
"Okay. Go ahead."
"I need a little time," Mimmi admits.
"Well, hurry up," Evie urges. "I can't even drink a juice without it wobbling and spilling everywhere."
"You've got powers? That's more than I would have expected. Have you tried boiling liquid or shaping it?"
Evie scoffs. "I haven't tried anything, okay? I just want you to make me normal again."
"We want you back the way you were as much as you do."
"Really?"
"Trust me." Mimmi puts her hand on Evie's arm. "Everything will be alright." Mimmi then leaves.
I approach Evie. "You should be conscious of where you're speaking. You never know who could be listening in." I leave her in a state of confusion.
When giving people their orders, I feel I sharp pain in my stomach. I dismiss it.
A few minutes later I walk towards Evie, Zac, and Cam when Evie falls developing a tail.
"Hm. Nice tail," I comment.
"She... she's a mermaid," Cam says baffled.
"Yes, I know," Zac says back.
I'm already moving to cover her when they begin helping.
"I don't get how you're still alive," I mumble.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
I shrug. "Nothing important."
"This isn't a complication, this a disaster," Cam mumbles.
"We have to get her out of sight. Cam, do something," Zac urges.
"Like what?" He asks.
"Hey dumbass." Cam turns to me. "Distract them." He goes to distract everyone by calling a fake party while me and Zac pull Evie into the walk in freezer. That's when I notice that she's covered in pink goo.
"What the hell happened?" I ask.
"The new mermaids," they both answer.
"What's happening to me?" She asks.
"I don't know," Zac admits.
Her body changes. Her top half becomes human but her tail stays.
"Zac! Do something," she hissed.
"Uh." He lifts his arm. "Close your eyes."
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" I question. He ignores me. He uses his powers and it creates a blueish film over her. Then her tail turns into legs and her top half becomes the mermaid part.
"At least I got half of you back," Zac comments.
"I don't want to be half-fish, half-person," she complains. "That's worse than being full-fish!"
Then someone knocks on the door. It hurts my ears.
"What's going on?" Cam asks from the other side of the door.
"Stay there!" Zac yells. "You can't come in."
"Why not?" Cam questions.
"Just don't!"
Zac gets ready to use his powers again. I grab his arm before her can. "Stop! You'll make it worse!"
Then Evie transforms fully into a mermaid, her entire body engulfed in pink goo. Evie screams. Cam runs in.
He looks at Zac. "What have you done to her?"
"It's not Zac," I tell him.
He notices me then turns to Zac again. "Why is he here?"
"Cuz I'm helping," I answer.
"It's those mermaids, the new ones," Evie explains. "What's happening? The mermaid said they were gonna fix me!"
"You shouldn't trust people you don't know," I say. I wobble a little, I grab onto the shelf for support. I take a breath. "If that's what they're trying, it's definitely not working."
Zac looks around. "Cam, go outside and make sure no one comes in."
"While you stay here and do what?" He asks. "Why can't Theo do it?"
They look to me but I'm too busy trying to support myself on the shelf to notice.
"Dude are you okay?" Zac asks.
I take a deep breath and shake my head. "Nope. I don't think so." My mind goes back to when I felt the sharp pain in my stomach. Someone stabbed me. I lift my shirt and notice a cut with yellow wolfsbane.
"Oh my god! What happened?" Evie asks.
I walk back and lean on the wall, sliding onto the floor. "Someone stabbed me. It's yellow wolfsbane."
"Wolfsbane?" Cam asks. "I've heard of that in mythology but, it kills werewolves."
"I know." I flash my yellow eyes. They back away in fear. I lean my head further on the wall, closing my eyes in pain. "You have to burn it out of me." I take out my phone. "Or call Dmitry. He can burn it out." Zac takes the phone. He hesitates. "It'll kill me if you don't."
Zac calls and Cam turns to me. "Is that what was happening yesterday? It was a full moon."
I nod. "It was my first full moon as a real werewolf."
"What do you mean real?" He questions.
"I'll explain later," I breathe out. "I'm still in pain you know."
"Who did this to you?" Evie asks, still covered in goo.
I take a deep breath. "Hunters. It's why me and my pack are here. They want to wipe out all supernatural creatures. That includes you."
They all freeze at that. Zac hangs up the phone. "Dmitry is on his way." He turns to Cam. "Please guard the door." Cam gulps and does what he is told. Zac still keeps his distance.
Serena walks in and Zac stands up. "Did you do this?"
Serena's eyes widen. "Of course not. Mimmi's in Rita's grotto casting a spell. It's supposed to turn Evie back."
"Well it's... not working," Zac says. "I'm going over there to stop them." He runs out of the room.
"Someone's coming in," I say, hearing someone.
"I'm on it," Sirena says.
Just then Dmitry teleports to the freezer, startling Evie and Serena.
He crouches next to me. "What happened?"
"Hunters," I answer. "It's yellow wolfsbane."
He nods and his hand lights on fire and he presses it to the wound. I suppress screams by biting my lip with my now out fangs. My claws are also digging into the ground. Soon enough all the poison is out. I sigh in relief.
Dmitry stands up. "Later loser." Before I can say anything he disappears. I stand up slowly, looking normal.
Sirena tries to make both of them invisible but it don't work.
"What if I'm stuck like this forever?" Evie wonders.
"Don't let yourself think like that. I'll find a way to fix this, I promise," Serena assures.
Evie lets out an exasperated groan.
Carly, another coworker, attempts to walk into the cool room but Sirena uses her powers to stop her.
Finally Evie turns back to normal right when Carly and Erik get the door open.
"Are you okay?" She asks Evie.
  Evie sighs. "Yeah. Fine."
"Cam said you and Zac were fighting," Carly mentions.
"Oh um, Cam got things mixed up," I admit. "I got into a fight with someone I care about a lot. It's hard because we've been through so much," I sniffle, to make it more convincing, "I just don't want things to go back the way they were, always fighting."
"Aw." Carly rubs my back supportively. "Everything will work out eventually."
I smile at her. "Yea. You're probably right."
All of us then leave the room and Carly goes back to work.
Cam turns to me. "Wow. You're acting is amazing."
  I shrug. "I've been trained."
"So, are we gonna talk about the claws and fangs thing?" Evie asks.
I turn to them with a smirk on my face. "Eventually. You can all meet my pack and we'll explain but, later."
  I leave them in shock.
