Chp. 35

Oscar's POV

Amaya sat in my car patiently, muted and was starring straight ahead.

"I have to go in. Just sit here and don't move." She looked me and nodded.

I made my way into the 19th street trap house.

"Yo Spooky." The dude who had my new crop greeted me.

With a head nod and an exchange of goods I was on my way.

Before I even got comfortable in my seat Amaya had my glove box open and was stashing everything. It made me laugh.

"What?" She asks.

"Nothing. You wanna go back to the party?"

"No. No one recognizes me anymore. Its weird to feel invisible."

"Better than being visible. Means you're blending into everything again."

"I guess. What do you wanna do?"

"Wanna go to the beach?"

"Sure. What else are we gonna do?"

I pulled off in the direction of the beach. Again we both sat in silence, looking straight ahead at the road.

We got to the beach, she got out first and headed towards the water. I lingered behind sitting on the hood of my car. I could tell she needed to be on her own and I wanted to play a couple games on my phone.

=====

Engrossed in my game I hadn't noticed but Amaya was gone from the beach. Searching the beach for the curly haired girl who was once there who was in fact not.

Just as I was getting into my car there she was sitting in the passenger seat.

"What's up?" I ask her.

"Nothing, got cold. You were busy on your phone so I just got in the car."

"You could have just got my attention. We could have left."

"Nah, it gave me a chance to get some things done."

"Okay. You want to head back?"

"First can you take me to the pharmacy?"

"I can do that."

For yet another car ride we were silent. I pulled in and she got out. Minutes later Amaya emerged with bags full of things.

"What's all this?"

"I bought food so I could eat. I can eat broth, popsicles and vegatables. But they didn't have any so just a bunch of other stuff. And my bag full of medications."

"Get anything for me?"

"Red Bull and mango Hi-Chews."

"Those are my favorites."

"They're everyone's favorites."

I backed the car out of the parking lot and we were on our way to her house. She rifled through the bags finally picking out something. At a red light I cracked the Red Bull.

Amaya popped in a couple pills and panicked when she didn't have a drink.

"Here." I handed it to her.

It looked like the smallest sip ever.

"Can't drink that, just needed a little something. Thanks." She pulled a gallon water jug out and chugged a little of it next.

"What were those?

She stopped drinking and wiped her face.

"A pain killer, some antibiotic as well as something else I can't say."

"Cool."

We pulled back onto the street, barely anyone was still there. I sat in the car not sure of what to do. Amaya sat there too not moving.

"Thank you for...hanging out with me." She finally said but it sounded like a question.

"You needed it. You have a lot going on, some relaxation would be good for you right now. Being at a party with everyone must have been an overload."

"You're right. I have to call Ebba tomorrow and tell her I can't come to her party thing next weekend."

"Yeah eating chili would definitely ruin your gallbladder right now."

"Chili would make for another trip to the hospital."

"That's wild."

Before either of could laugh Senora Sanchez came outside to get Amaya.

"Goodnight."

"Night Oscar."

She got out and her mom was reduced to tears.

They both sat down on the stoop just as I pulled away.

=====

Amaya's POV

My mother was reduced to tears over everything from today. I guess it didn't help seeing me back in a hospital. Then my mom found a pregnancy test in the trash, a positive one and thought it was mine. But it wasn't.

The next suspects were the twins. Each of us took a twin and interrogated them.

She took Katia who was a lot tougher to deal with than Lilia.

Lilia I knew had a date but I also know that it takes longer than a week to have a positive test.

"Did you take a pregnancy test?" I finally let myself say.

Lilia immediately started laughing. Like laughing way too much. After a solid minute it became too much.

"Lilia! Get serious for once. Is this your pregnancy test?"

"AJ, I can't be pregnant."

"How do you know? Condoms break, birth control isn't always affective.

"I can't be pregnant because I'm gay."

"Yeah you can't be pregnant." I stood up to leave but she blocked the door.

"Are you mad that I'm gay?" Her face went from silly laughing to real serious.

"Why would I be mad?"

"Because homophobia is still a thing. Which is big in the Latinx community and I just don't want that. Please don't be homophobic and have someone beat the gay away."

"Lilia the only one that's ever going to be receiving any beating is anyone who tries to hurt you, I'll be first in line next I'm gonna guess will be a whole lot of scary gang dudes."

"What?!" She was shocked, I could read it on her face. "You beat someone up for me."

"Yeah."

"Why?"

"I'm alway gonna protect you. I've known that from birth that I'd beat the shit out of anyone who hurt my little sisters. I'd do anything for the three of you."

Lilia slammed into me for a bear hug.

"Just please God don't tell me you're dating a Prophet."

"I'm not but she does live near that side of town."

"I'm happy for you. Now let's go see if this test is Katia's."

We ran out of the twins room down the stairs to find my mother lecturing Katia on the safety of sex practices.

"Now missy. Did you or didn't you not take a pregnancy test?"

"No."

"Don't lie to me, Katia."

"Mami I didn't take the test. Its probably AJ's."

"That's it. Everyone is taking a pregnancy test in front of me." Oh joy I thought.

One by one, youngest to oldest the four sisters peed on a stick in front of our mother.

One by one the tests came back negative.

"Who the hell is pregnant then?" Mami asked completely confused.

"If its not any of us. Is it you Mami?" Little, sweet, very much gonna be dead, Sara asked.

"No its not me."

"Then it had to be someone who was at the party." I suggest.

"Maybe."

"Throw that thing away and off to bed, all of you. AJ I don't wanna see you mixing music at 3 am. Katia I don't wanna see you playing Candy Crazy either."

"Can't listen to music right now. Concussion."

"Whatever. Just go to bed."

We all marched upstairs taking the orders.

"Goodnight little sisters." I say to all of them.

"Night AJ." One by one the repeated each other.

Walking back into my room something seemed off. My stuff had been moved. My jewelry box sat on top of a pile of clothes when I left it in my closet.

The contents inside had been left alone except for one thing, it was missing.

Oh no.

ANY GUESSES?!?!?!??!?!?!?
