TWO YEARS AFTER EPILOGUE

MADDIE'S POV

I remember most vacations from my childhood. How could I forget them? They're only filled with happy memories, laughs, and smiles. And, of course, the occasional mischief, because we were kids after all.

But, I would have to say my most memorable vacation wasn't when I was a child, it was about nine years ago, in a little country called Greece. The surprise trip from Harry certainly ended quite differently than it started.

Even though I have that trip to thank for altering the trajectory of my life for the better, the more recent trips we've taken have been so, so memorable. Fulfilling, too, because they're filled with more family and more laughs and sitting around the cramped table at dinner as we have six conversations at once and food goes flying on occasion.

Like today, and the past few days, for example.

I guess you could say we started up a little family tradition last year. This is our second year in a row, and I have no doubt it'll continue.

None of us had ever been to the Lake District before, so that's why we chose it as a getaway. It was close, which was needed with all of the kids. Long flights were a no go– especially for us. It's also simply beautiful up here, with the lake and mountains in perfect view from the house.

You'd think that because there are so many of us, we'd be crazy to even attempt to travel together. That's one of the reasons we kept it close to home, otherwise it would be next to impossible. But, we were determined to make it work somehow because that's just how we are.

Last year, we thought we just got lucky when we found two nice houses to rent right down the road from each other. So, we grabbed them, and spent a lovely week up here with all of the kids as they swam and got a kick out of the boat rides.

This year, we struck gold again when the same houses were still available for a good portion of the summer. Naturally, we booked them again, and arrived here three days ago. The kids absolutely love it here, and Lucas even remembered the room he stayed in last year, so we put him in there again.

He's with Henry, Lily, and Emmy in one bedroom for a week-long cousin sleepover. Eloise and Riley are still with Harry and I, mostly because of the space but also because they're still little enough for us to want to keep them close by at night. Caroline and Adam are in their own room, and Dakota and Eliza in theirs.

The other house occupies my parents, Harry's parents, Cassie, Miles, Olivia, Greyson, Hayden, and Eden. My siblings are the ones who always volunteer to take the couches, otherwise we would be hauling air mattresses from home and squishing them into the spare game rooms.

It's a lot, but it's so much fun. My favorite part is that we can actually work out getting all of us here, and two years in a row, too. I'm hoping it continues to work out for years to come, because knowing the kids can look forward to it every single year is something I want for them.

Today was boat day. We all went out around lunchtime and packed coolers full of sandwiches, splitting up onto the boats and taking them out onto the lake for the better part of the afternoon. We stopped and swam for a while, anchoring the boats next to each other. We had a bit of pushback from Lucas about wearing his life jacket, so we had to compromise. He wore it for a little bit, and then once Harry jumped in, he could take it off as long as he stayed next to Dad. I was a little hesitant, but there's no denying we have a strong little swimmer on our hands.

We came back late afternoon, put the girls down for a late nap, and relaxed after our activities. Lucas had a brief nap too, which I'm grateful for since most nights here, we let him stay up later than usual. Most of the time he and his cousins are watching a movie, so he'll fall asleep anyway.

Then dinner time rolled around and burgers were grilled, served, and the kids ate a bit too fast so they could get back to playing games upstairs. There was a mean game of hide and seek going on and they couldn't find Emmy for almost fifteen minutes.

But, nonetheless, time passed, and everyone wound down. The sun set, the moon rose, and the house finally got quiet after we put a movie on for the kids upstairs and gave them some popcorn. Not a peep in almost an hour.

"I think you're being ridiculous."

"I am not."

"Well maybe I just can't take you seriously with that puke on your shirt."

"Excuse me, not my fault."

"It was your baby, so it was your fault by association."

"Both of you are ridiculous." I mumble under my breath, untucking my legs from under me and standing up from the couch, my back popping once in the process from how long I was sitting down. Miles and Harry continue their stupid banter as I grab the empty soda cans and glasses from the coffee table, bringing them into the kitchen and disposing of them respectively.

The clock on the oven reads almost ten. I know the kids' movie is going to be over soon, so we'll probably head up soon to get them to bed. Just as I place the glasses in the sink, Caroline comes into the kitchen.

"I've got an idea, and I'm not sure how we didn't think of it before." She says, leaning against the counter and making me raise my eyebrows.

"Which is?"

"We need to do s'mores. The fire pit out back could be perfect, we just need to figure out how to light a fire."

"I'm sure that would be easy, that's a great idea. Someone could go get the stuff we'd need tomorrow and we can do it tomorrow night."

"Do what?"

Cassie steals my attention as she comes into the room, holding Olivia against her shoulder as she burps her.

"S'mores." Caroline says.

"Oh, that's a great idea."

"Are you gonna put her down for the night?" I ask, seeing Olivia's eyes drooping adorably on Cassie's shoulder.

"Yeah, we should head out soon. Is Miles still in the living room?"

I nod, and she quietly heads that way with Olivia.

It's still weird seeing Miles with a kid. He's so childish himself sometimes that I wonder if his frontal lobe ever finished developing.

I'm kidding, kind of.

He's such a great dad– so gentle with Olivia, and Cassie said he cried when she was born, and I fully believe her.

"I'm gonna go find Adam and see about getting the kids to bed." Caroline sighs, tying her hair up in a messy bun quickly.

"I'm right behind you." I say, flicking off the bright lights in the kitchen and turning on a warm lamp instead.

Caroline disappears upstairs and I stop by the living room to grab Harry, just as Miles is taking Olivia– who's already asleep– from Cassie to put her in the car seat. Cassie's zipping up the diaper bag and Harry's eyes grab mine quickly.

"I saw Caroline go upstairs, want to head up?" He asks softly, and I nod.

"See you guys tomorrow." Cassie says softly, Miles carrying the car seat.

"And wash your shirt." Harry tells him, earning a shove in the shoulder from Miles and an eye roll from me.

Harry follows close behind me up the stairs as we turn down the long hallway, walking all the way to the end of it to reach the quiet and dark game room. The soft voices coming from the TV are the only sources of noise on the whole second floor.

I spot Lucas curled up on the bean bag on the floor, tired eyes fixated on the TV as he holds his stuffed dinosaur close to him.

"Twins are asleep." Harry mumbles in my ear, and I see both of them on the couch asleep next to each other. Riley is leaning against Lily and Eloise is slumped over against Riley.

"I'll grab them." Harry continues, stepping around me. I walk around the couch and lean down next to Lucas, and it takes a second to get his attention because he's so focused on the movie.

"Hey, it's time for bed." I say softly.

"But it's almost over, can I finish it?" He asks, unable to take his eyes off of the screen.

I glance over at Harry who's now holding one two year old on each arm, then back at my five year old.

"Okay, that's fine. Dad and I will put your sisters to bed and then I'll come back."

He nods, and I smile at his enchantment with Coco. I stand up, following Harry as he slips out of the room with the twins and down the hallway to the kids' room right next to ours.

"I told Lucas he could finish the movie." I say quietly as I softly shut the door behind us.

"Fine by me." Harry replies equally as quietly, carefully laying the girls down on their bed.

I move to turn on the two lamps on the bedside tables, filling the room with dim yellow light. Eloise begins to stir awake first, Riley still out cold as Harry pulls out their little pajamas and a change of pull ups so we don't have to worry about them ruining the sheets in their sleep.

Having two of us and two of them is super convenient, because it makes mornings and bedtime much quicker than if one of us were to have to do it alone. Lucas is obviously easier since he's older and can get ready for bed by himself for the most part, but when he was much younger we would trade off mornings and nights so it was fair game.

But since we have the best of both worlds this time around, we're tucking in the girls in about ten minutes. Eloise promptly fell back asleep when Harry picked her up and held her for a few minutes like he likes to do before they go down for the night, and I'm building the pillow wall around them so they don't get close to the edge of the bed.

Riley's face is smushed against the massive pillow, her hair falling in her face a bit so I brush it behind her ear and kiss her head. Both of the twins got my color hair that's curly on a good day like Harry's, and all three of our kids have green eyes. Lucas is the one who is literally Harry's twin.

I pull the blanket up so Riley is tucked in just as Harry carefully lays Eloise down. He tucks her under the blanket and tucks her teddy under her arm, which reminds me that Riley is missing hers. I'm guessing it's still on the couch, so I'll grab it when I go get Lucas.

Harry kisses Eloise's hair and leans over to do the same for Riley, whispering I love you to both of them, just like he does every single night since they were born without fail.

I smile, my attention turning to the door when it slowly begins to open and Lucas comes in, shutting it gently behind him. He's always extra quiet when he knows his sisters are asleep; one time, not long ago when they were napping, the house was so quiet I thought he had fallen asleep too. I went upstairs and found him reading in the playroom and he said he didn't want to play with the toys because they might be too loud. I think I cried, but I can't quite remember.

Lucas walks further into the room, rubbing his eyes tiredly and dragging his dinosaur on the ground beside him. He's also holding Riley's stuffed bunny in his hand, holding it out like he wants to give it to me.

"Riley forgot her bunny." He says, handing it to me sweetly. "And the movie's over."

His hair is all messy, and his high pitched voice is making me wonder how I got so lucky with kids this sweet and a son who looks out for his baby sisters when he's only five.

"Thank you for bringing it, do you want to give it to her?" I ask softly. He nods, letting go of his dinosaur and jumping up on the end of the bed to crawl towards the girls with the bunny in his hand. He tucks it next to Riley, pulling the blanket up on the toy and making sure it's comfortable too. My eyes catch Harry's and he's shaking his head and smiling.

"Say goodnight." Harry whispers to Lucas.

Lucas spreads his arms out and lays them gently over the girls, giving them a big goodnight hug as I hear him whisper goodnight to them. He carefully crawls back down from the bed.

Harry comes around the corner of the bed quickly, scooping Lucas up and throwing him over his shoulder. A giggle is immediately emitted from Lucas, making me smile as he kicks his legs back and forth. I pick up his dinosaur and hand it to Harry as he turns to carry Lucas to his room.

I follow them out, glancing at the girls one last time and leaving the door slightly ajar in case one of them wakes up. Harry enters the room across the hall and two doors down where Henry, Lily, Lucas, and Emmy sleep. He lightly tosses Lucas down on the bed, there's more giggles, and I wonder if there's any chance he's actually going to go to sleep right now.

"Dad, stop!" He giggles as Harry begins to tickle him, laughter coming from both of them as I get Lucas' pajamas from the drawer and shake my head.

Harry surrenders, Lucas finally calming down and breathing again. He tries to tickle Harry in revenge but Harry just picks him up and tosses him back on the bed again, and they do this at least three times before I finally intervene and give Lucas his pajamas.

"Time to change, bug." I toss him his clothes, but Harry is truly the child here because he's the one not cooperating.

"Mummy help me!" Lucas giggles, Harry completely ignoring me as he continues to pick up and toss Lucas on the bed.

"Why am I always scolding you and not him?" I say to Harry as he finally lets up, smiling. "He's five and better behaved than you were at sixteen."

"You just happened to get the best of both worlds." He smirks. That damn smirk. The one that always has me giving in.

Kids want ice cream at bedtime? Okay. One more episode of a show? Okay. Leave the kids with our parents for a night so we can have some privacy? Say less.

Obviously I was damned from the start, but every time I catch myself falling for it I get just a little mad at myself. And then it immediately disappears when I see the kids smile or laugh over their little victories, all thanks to Dad.

When Lucas is in his pajamas, he quickly leaves the room to go to the bathroom and brush his teeth. Since he's old enough to do it on his own now, Harry and I hang back. We like to let him have his independence with these little things.

"Are you even going to sleep tonight?" I chuckle, Harry collapsing on the comforter with his eyes on the ceiling. I sit down on the end of the bed about a foot away from him.

"Maybe I ate one too many of your mum's cookies..." He trails off. "Let's just hope the girls sleep through the night again."

"Last night was too good to be true." I nod. Usually one or both of the twins will wake us up at least once for something, but last night, all four of us slept soundly without a peep.

Harry grabs my wrist and pulls me down on the bed, placing me in an awkward position until I fully mimic his position staring at the ceiling. He starts to mindlessly fiddle with my bracelet like he always does.

"I vote, tomorrow, we go swim down at the docks after breakfast– pancakes– come back for nap time, and then we set up the football goals for Lucas."

"Sounds perfect." I smile, turning my head against the bed to look at him to find his eyes already on me.

"He'll be excited. He's been talking about wanting to beat Miles in a game for so long." I chuckle.

"With Miles' skill, he could be trying his hardest and I genuinely think Lucas would still win. That kid is going places, I swear."

"And yet I have no idea where he got it from."

"Hey, I'm athletic."

"...Sure."

"Uh, 'scuse me."

"I didn't say anything."

"Your pause was indicative."

"I can't help if that's your interpretation of it."

"You're ridiculous."

"Am not."

"Are too."

"Am–"

The bedroom door opens up again and Lucas comes back in with his football covered pajamas on, cutting us off. Sometimes we're the actual children, not our actual children. It never gets old.

"All done?" Harry asks Lucas, sitting up. Lucas nods, crawling up onto the bed next to Harry and trying to shimmy himself under the blankets. Both of us stand up so we're not pulling on the sheets as he does so.

"Alright, sleep good so we can play some football tomorrow." Harry says, riling Lucas up for the second time.

"Really? Can I play Uncle Miles? And Henry? And Uncle Hay–"

"Yes, you can." Harry chuckles. "But you'll need sleep to do that, so get to it."

Lucas smushes his face into his pillow with a smile on his face as I turn off the lamp on the bedside table. Harry leans down and kisses him goodnight, ruffling his hair in the process before I do the same.

"Your cousins will be in here soon, but still try to sleep okay?" I whisper, knowing full well he'll be wide awake and chatty as ever when they do come in, and they'll all talk until they doze off. I can't be mad about it, because Harry and I would do it all the damn time when we were younger.

Lucas nods against the pillow, whispering a semi-tired goodnight before Harry and I quietly leave the room. I can hear Henry, Lily, and Emmy in the bathroom across the hall as they bicker quietly.

Harry yawns, making me yawn as I silently motion for him to keep walking back to our room. I follow him into the room, shutting the door behind us again. I look over at the twins to see they haven't moved an inch, which is a great sign, and Harry collapses down on the bed for the second time.

"I could fall asleep right now." He mumbles softly.

"And here I was thinking that burst of energy was going to last." I chuckle as I fumble through my clothes in the drawer and pull out something to sleep in. I grab Harry a clean t-shirt and a new pair of boxers, tossing them to him as he makes absolutely no effort to catch them and they land on the comforter.

"You weren't kidding." I mumble. Honestly, if I was him, I probably wouldn't be either.

Sometimes I resent myself for how I've lost that spurge of adrenaline I used to get at night, prompting me to stay up late into the night, but then I have to remind myself that I have three kids and I'm always going to be exhausted no matter what. That's why bedtime is like the finish line for us.

"I'm going to go shower quickly." I tell him, my hand on the door knob.

"And I'm up."

"Oh my god–"

I leave the room as his laughter trails off. I smile, shaking my head, mostly at myself because of the blush that he's still able to single handedly induce on my face. You'd think after however many years it has been and three kids I'd get used to it and it wouldn't affect me much anymore, but no, it's kind of the opposite.

I guess that's quite a good sign, so I'll take it. If I'm honest, he'll probably still have me blushing when the kids are grown and out of the house and we're getting a discount on the early bird special.

Yelps and whoops are bouncing off of the grass as the ongoing football game continues. Lucas, Miles, my dad, Eden, Adam, and Dakota have had a heated game of three on three going on for a bit now. We've all been switching out players so everyone gets the chance. Henry and Greyson are currently taking a break and enjoying their s'mores, so Adam and Dakota jumped in for them.

Harry is mid-bite on his s'more when he pulls Riley up into his lap, who's holding a massive piece of watermelon that's dripping all over her clothes and down her little arms. I smile, watching as my mum helps Eloise roast her marshmallow over the fire pit. Cassie is next to me holding Olivia, and everyone else has been in and out of the house as they get more food and drinks and retrieve blankets and jackets as it starts to get chilly outside.

The screen door leading to the back porch opens and closes loudly, Jane and George coming out of it carrying leftovers from dinner, more watermelon slices, and another bag of marshmallows. Riley jumps off of Harry's lap and beelines for the watermelon, grabbing another slice when she hasn't even finished the one she's holding.

Lucas suddenly comes at me in my peripheral vision, jogging up and flinging himself across my lap, out of breath.

"Whoa, what's up?" I laugh as he pants dramatically.

"Where's Uncle Hayden? I want him to plaaayy!" He yells.

"He's inside darling!" Jane answers him, laughing. "Just in the living room."

"What is he doing?" Lucas scoffs.

"I think he's talking to Brynn..." She says, all of us knowing Hayden spends every minute of his spare time caught up with his girlfriend. Honestly, I'm shocked she didn't come on this trip. She's basically part of the family at this point.

"Go get him! Tell him I said to come outside."

"Okay Nana!" Lucas jumps up, stopping to get another marshmallow from the bag before marching up the porch steps and disappearing inside. Just as the door closes behind him, it opens up again and Caroline and Emmy are making their way back outside.

"I wanna play!" Emmy yells, beelining from the porch steps to the football game. Caroline is carrying a mug and a blanket, and suddenly I'm wanting a sweatshirt myself.

"Oh my goodness..." I hear Harry mumble, looking over to see him laughing at the state of Riley. Bow completely lopsided in her hair, clothes stained, arms a mess, and now she's missing a shoe.

"What in the world..." I laugh, Cassie chuckling beside me.

"It's honestly really cute." Cassie says as I shake my head.

Riley giggles as Harry scoops her up. "Lainey, I'm gonna go clean her up." He says to me, holding her upside down as she wiggles in his grip.

"If you can get her to sit still." I laugh. I look over at Eloise, who is in the opposite state, calmly eating her marshmallow on my mum's lap and watching the football game. And then I laugh at how different they already are at two years old.

Lucas comes barreling out of the house all of a sudden, quickly followed by Hayden as they both run over to jump back into the game. I watch as Lucas steals the ball from Eden and starts running, only to be intercepted by my dad, and then Miles takes it from my dad, passing it to Adam. Then my eyes lose the ball and I turn back to the fire pit.

HARRY'S POV

Later that night when the twins are already cleaned up and fast asleep, Lucas is feeling stubborn. It's a normal occurrence, and I know he gets it from us, so I can only work with him with the promise of extra pancakes for breakfast if he goes to sleep. He usually complies, which is how you know this kid is my son.

"Oh no you don't." I'm constantly catching my little man from darting away from me. I wrap my arms around his tiny waist and pick him up, flipping him upside down as he lets out a loud laugh in front of the mirror. He tries to grip onto the counter and flip himself around, but he's not too slick.

He's only just brushed his teeth, it's past eleven– way past his bedtime– and there is just nothing he won't do to not go to bed.

I flip him back around and settle him on my hip as best as I can as he calms down.

"Did you have a good day?" I ask him, tickling him a little bit and he squirms.

He nods. "Yeah. I beat Uncle Miles in football! And Uncle Hayden. And I got to say hi to Brynn. And Nana–"

"Okay, slow down." I chuckle. "Uncle Hayden let you say hi to Brynn?"

"Yeah. She said she liked my shirt! I asked her if she could come play football but she said she was too far away. But I can play with her when I see her again."

"That's very nice of her." I highly doubt he'll have to wait very long, because I'm sure she'll be tagging along with Hayden as soon as we get back.

"Dad?" Lucas says, a sudden serious look on his face.

"Yes?"

"Are they going to get married?" He whispers 'married' like it's a bad word, and I smile.

"I don't know, maybe they'll get married. You should ask Uncle Hayden if he plans on proposing soon." That will certainly be the most hilarious interaction ever.

"What does proposing mean?"

"It means to ask someone to marry you. Sometimes you even give them a ring when you propose as a symbol that you're going to get married soon." I explain, trying to use simple terms that he would understand.

"Did you propose to Mummy?"

"I did." I smile. "It was a very special day, too."

"What happened?" He pries.

"I wrote Mummy letters telling her how much I love her and she had to go find them, like a scavenger hunt. Do you remember us telling you that we were friends when we were in school?"

He nods.

"Well, I asked her to marry me in a special place from where we grew up. Auntie Addison took pictures for us."

"Can I see them?"

"I'm sure I can find them, yes."

"Did you give her a ring?"

"Yes, it's the one she always wears, remember?"

He nods. "The pink one. Did she give you this one?" He grabs my left hand and tugs at my ring finger, twisting the ring on it.

"Not right away, but she gave it to me at our wedding." I smile.

"What's a wedding?"

"It's a big celebration when two people get married. Lots of family and friends come and celebrate, and you get to dress up and have a lot of fun."

"Was I at your wedding?"

"No," I chuckle, "it was before you and your sisters were born."

"Oh."

"But if Uncle Hayden gets married, you can go to his wedding."

"Really?" He perks up. "Will I get to stay up late!"

"Yes, I think we could work something out." I smile. "Alright, time for bed. Your cousins are already asleep so let's be extra quiet." I set him down and he scampers out of the bathroom as I turn off the light.

"Can I just sleep with you and Mummy tonight?" He whispers loudly, looking up at me in the hallway.

I raise my eyebrows. "Sure. Want to get your dinosaur?"

He nods, walking a few doors down the hallway and quietly opening the bedroom door, disappearing inside. He comes back thirty seconds later with his dinosaur and carefully shuts the door behind him.

"Okay, c'mon." I smile, following him as he pushes open our bedroom door that's already ajar and quietly walks in. The twins are asleep on the far bed, and Lainey looks up from her book when we enter.

Lucas climbs up on the bed towards Lainey, and I watch as he grabs her hand and begins to inspect it. "This ring, Dad?"

I laugh quietly, again. "Yes, that's the ring." I nod. Lainey only furrows her eyebrows as Lucas crawls under the blankets next to her.

"What?" She looks at me.

"Long story." I shake my head, getting into bed so Lucas is squished between us.

"Mummy?" Lucas whispers.

"Yes?" Lainey whispers back, closing her book and placing it on the bedside table.

"Daddy told me that I can stay up late at Uncle Hayden's wedding."

She furrows her entire face, turning on her side so she's facing the two of us. "And when is this wedding?"

"When Uncle Hayden makes Brynn do a scavenger hunt."

I can't hide my laughter at that. Lainey even laughs too, probably more at the lack of context than at what Lucas said.

"Lucas, you don't have to do a scavenger hunt. You can propose in any way you like." I say.

"Oh." He says, and I look at Lainey.

"He asked about Hayden and Brynn, and then how I proposed to you."

"Ah." Lainey says. "Well, your dad made me drive all around town, so hopefully Hayden makes it easier on Brynn if he does decide to propose." She chuckles. "Why are we talking about this all of a sudden?"

I shrug.

"Will I get married someday?" Lucas asks, Lainey and I eyeing each other across the bed.

"If you want to, yes, and if you find someone you love very much and want to spend the rest of your life with it." Lainey answers him.

"This much?" He says, stretching out his arms as far as they can go, his right arm smacking me in the chest and his left hitting Lainey in the face.

"Yes," I laugh. "That much. Even more."

"That's a lot."

"I know."

"Alright, enough marriage talk. You're five. Time for bed." Lainey says, tucking the dinosaur under Lucas's arm and kissing him goodnight. I turn around on my stomach, clutching the pillow under me as Lucas goes quiet and smushes his face into the pillow.

I look over to Lainey as she watches him for a moment, and then looks over at me.

"I love you this much." She mouths, stretching out her arms like Lucas just did a second ago.

I smile, sitting up quietly and propping my head up on my elbow. "That's a lot." I say teasingly.

"I know." She responds. "It's been going on for so long I kind of gave up on fighting it."

"If I had an accessible throw pillow and our son wasn't right here, I would hit you with it."

"That's how I know you also love me this much." She does it again, laughing.

"You're right, I do." I nod. "Can't help it, really. Not my fault."

She eyes me, rolling her eyes and I catch a light blush in the dim light before she reaches behind her to turn the lamp off. I lay my head back down and silently yawn, pulling as much blanket that's not being stolen by her and Lucas as I can over me.

All this wedding and proposal talk has my mind rewinding and I'm glad the lights are off, because anyone catching the smile on my face right now would make me, in a word, embarrassed.

Sometimes it makes me feel ridiculous, but I meant it when I said I can't help it. It's not my fault. I just have a lot of love to give. I'm lucky she's the one who I get to give it to, and that three little ones came along who I get to give it to, too.

Happily ever after has never felt so good.
