chapter forty-six.

In the morning, Matthias found himself out and about.

He stopped a dress shop before heading towards his destination, he knocked on the familiar door and waited for the person to open the door. He could hear someone approaching and smiled at the sight of Bonnie Bennett.

"Matthias?" She questioned before stepping outside. "Why are you here?"

"Well for one, I am upset you opened the coffin." He told her honestly and Bonnie gave him a guilty look.

"I'm sorry, we were hoping that it was the key to killing Klaus and unlinking you two." She confessed to him. "I didn't know that it was your mother."

Matthias waved her off, "I know your intentions were good, Bonnie." He told her honestly. "But I'm here for a different reason."

Bonnie was relieved to hear that Matthias wasn't angry with her. "And that would be?"

Matthias held out an invitation and a box towards her. "Be my date tonight."

Bonnie's eyes widened as she took the box and invitation from him. "Why me?" She asked.

"Elena and I are in a fight, she kissed Damon or let him kiss her." He told her and Bonnie winced. "But you knew that."

"I'm sorry." Bonnie apologized.

Matthias shook his head, "It's okay." He then smiled at her. "So, will you be my date?"

Bonnie thought about it for a second before nodding her head, "I could use some fun after these past stressful days."

"You and me both." He laughed and Bonnie smiled. "I'll be introducing you to Kol, by the way." He told her and Bonnie looked apprehensive at that. "He's a bit on the wild side but my siblings and I were told to behave tonight."

Bonnie nodded her head, "Okay."

"I'll pick you up." He told her before turning on his heel and disappearing from sight.

Bonnie bit her lip as she walked inside with the box in hand, she went up to her room before opening the box and her mouth fell open in shock. It was a beautiful red satin dress that would expose her shoulders and hug her waist while the skirt was flowed out. She didn't know how Matthias knew her size but decided to not worry about it.

Looking at the invitation, she realized that she had some time to kill beforehand.

"You look beautiful." Matthias complimented Bonnie the minute that he had seen her.

Bonnie blushed slightly as she smiled at him, "I think it's a bit much." She told him honestly.

Matthias shook his head as he held out his hand for her to grab. "Nonsense, it's normal for Mikaelson's to go big or go home." He told her honestly.

"Right." Bonnie laughed as he helped her into the car.

Bonnie had her hair in loose curls that was pinned back so that she wouldn't mess with it much tonight and she kept her makeup to the bare minimum since she didn't feel the need to go overboard with it. Bonnie then noticed that she was matching with Matthias, something that he had no doubt planned for the evening.

"We match." She noted with a small laugh.

"Yes, my mother is going to kill me." He told her honestly with a laugh. "She said black tux and to spite her I chose a red suit to match your dress."

Bonnie laughed softly, "Yes I do believe that she's going to have your head." She joked.

When they arrived at the Mikaelson home, Bonnie was in awe. She knew that Matthias and Klaus had gone all out, but she didn't expect this.

The two arrived only moments after Elena had arrived on her own. Bonnie took a deep breath to calm her nerves before the doors opened to reveal Bonnie and Matthias entering together. Elena noticed the two and couldn't deny the pang in her chest when she saw them together, she didn't miss how Matthias was purposely choosing not to look at her and she knew that it was her own fault.

"People are staring." Bonnie whispered nervously.

"Because I'm the odd one out here." He told her calmly before leading her inside.

Klaus chuckled when he spotted Matthias wearing red, but continued searching for his own date. Kol walked over to his brother, a wide grin on his face making Matthias give him a wink.

"Mother is going to kill you." Kol laughed.

"She can try." Matthias laughed before motioning towards Bonnie. "Bonnie meet my baby brother Kol. Kol meet my good friend, Bonnie Bennet."

Kol held out his hand and Bonnie took it from him, she blushed when he kissed her hand. "Pleasure to meet you. Any friend of Matthias is a friend of mine."

Bonnie nodded her head, "Likewise."

Kol was about to speak when Elijah spoke up, "Uh, if everyone could gather, please."

"God, I hate him sometimes." Matthias mumbled before he and Kol excused themselves from Bonnie's side.

Bonnie laughed softly as Kol dragged Matthias towards the stairs where his family gathered. She felt awkward and out of place, but she was happy that Matthias had invited her.

"Welcome." Elijah greeted, "Thank you for joining us. You know, whenever my mother brings our family together like this, it's tradition for us to commence the evening with a dance." Elijah explained while motioning towards Esther who had walked down the stairs, "Tonight's pick is a centuries-old waltz, so if all of you could please find yourselves a partner, please join us in the ballroom."

Matthias returned to Bonnie's side, not even glancing at Elena as he passed by her and Damon. He did let out an audible scoff when Damon asked Elena to dance with him, something that Elena didn't miss and felt as if she was losing Matthias because of her choices.

"Care to dance?" Matthias asked Bonnie while holding out his hand.

Bonnie smiled at him. "Of course."

Leading her to where everyone was gathered, Bonnie held onto Matthias tightly as she felt her nerves returning. As the music began playing, Bonnie felt herself relax some as Matthias gave her a reassuring smile.

"Thank you." Matthias thanked her softly. "For coming tonight."

Bonnie smiled at him as he spun her around before placing a hand on her waist and holding the other. "Thank you for inviting me."

The two danced in comfortable silence, small smiles on their faces as they did so. Matthias and Bonnie shared silent laughs as Matthias pointed out to her that Klaus had a crush on Caroline, Bonnie responding with that Caroline would probably never since Tyler is her boyfriend still. The two shared jokes with one another before Matthias had to spin her away.

Matthias and Elena collided together, and Matthias felt his heart twist painfully at the sight of her. Elena and he stood together for a moment before he started to move, prompting her to do the same.

"You invited Bonnie." Elena stated after clearing her throat.

"And you have both Stefan and Damon on your arms." He told her bitterly. "You had no need for me."

Elena frowned, "Is that how you feel?"

"Elena, you and Damon kissed." He told her firmly. "I had to hear it from the lips of his brother and now you're here, with both of them might I add." He let out a bitter laugh. "Bonnie has been the only normal friend that I have aside from Katherine." He shook his head, "So, yes, I invited Bonnie because at least she doesn't lie to me."

Elena couldn't even reply as Matthias spun her away and into the arms of Stefan Salvatore, nonetheless. He let out another scoff before being thankful that Bonnie had returned to him and that he didn't have to play nice.

"That seemed intense." Bonnie told him softly. "You okay?"

Matthias sighed and nodded his head, "She just doesn't understand how I feel."

Bonnie nodded her head and then a very bad idea popped into her head. "So why not make her?" Matthias frowned, "Kiss me in front of her, so she understands how you feel." Bonnie told him and Matthias' eyes widened. "She doesn't understand the betrayal that you feel, right? She doesn't get that she hurt you because she let him kiss her and she didn't stop it. It would be one thing if she had stopped it immediately, but she didn't, so show her how you feel."

Was this really the Bonnie Bennett that he knew? Matthias was in awe at her words but with one glance around the room, he noticed that Elena was still talking with Stefan softly. Deciding to take that risk of Elena finally understanding where he came from and why he wanted a break, he allowed Bonnie to wrap her arms around his neck and pull him closer.

Elena's eyes were wide when she spotted Matthias and Bonnie together, it wasn't because they were dancing closely, no it was because Bonnie had pulled Matthias towards her and connected their lips.

Bonnie and Matthias had kissed.
