This is a short story about a character I am working on for a larger work, just trying to test the waters and see what comes of this. Thanks for reading!Caroline never thought she would be working her family farm alone, but with her parents gone and her brother following his own dark path, she finds herself struggling to do everything on her own. Until a familiar face comes along with a chance to change her fate.
I wrote this when I was about 13 years old, and it is very heavily inspired by Stephen Crane's 'The Red Badge of Courage' to the point where it's basically a rip-off. In particular you'll note this in a lot of the imagery, and the explicit use of dialect in dialogue -- the latter of which I now regret.I love 'The Red Badge of Courage' and wanted to write something of the same ilk, but being Canadian decided to set it in the War of 1812. In hindsight the epilogue is horrifically cliche.

Danny had been in Jersey for the last few days and Steve felt like he was all alone.A beautiful picture of her singing popped up on the screen and Steve turned up the volume on the television scooting to the edge of his seat."Well known singer and songwriter Lola Williams, found dead in her apartment in New York." Steve grabbed his phone calling the first person he thought would be awake at 2 am. After a few rings came Chin's groggy voice, before he could speak Steve chipped in. "Turn on the news now!" Steve didn't know how to feel he felt like dying. He felt like his heart had been ripped out again. He had trouble breathing."Steve, this can't be true. I'm getting in my car now. Call Danny." Steve hung up the phone not believing what he was hearing
