Echo has always been viewed as the weak link of the pack ever since the alpha, Derek, brought her in. She has come a long way since her human mother kicked her out of the house at sixteen, but her wolf will forever be smaller and not as strong as her peers. When the hunters who killed Derek's father return to hunt in their pack, Echo can no longer brush off the hateful comments about her made by the other pack members. Her only chance to be fully accepted is by risking it all by leaving the pack to follow the scent of her mate.

All Kodi has ever known is the importance of hunting the animals that took his parents from him. They even named him after the Kodiak bear, considering he would become a predator to wolves. Ever since his parents were killed by an alpha wolf, Kodi has lived with his uncle, Lyle, who has taught him everything he could possibly know about hunting. If Kodi isn't spending time at the local pub, he's deep in the woods, tracking the werewolves that pose a threat to humans. It isn't until he meets a short brunette in his town that his world will be turned upside down.

The Pit and the Pendulum (1842)

"The Pit and the Pendulum" is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe and first published in 1842 in the literary annual The Gift: A Christmas and New Year's Present for 1843. The story is about the torments endured by a prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition, though Poe skews historical facts. The narrator of the story describes his experience of being tortured. The story is especially effective at inspiring fear in the reader because of its heavy focus on the senses, such as sound, emphasizing its reality, unlike many of Poe's stories which are aided by the supernatural.
