El término urbano surgió en los Estados Unidos para nombrar, en general, la música popular contemporánea de raíces afroamericanas. Inicialmente -durante los años 1980-, géneros como el soul, el rhythm and blues, el jazz y el funk formaban parte de esta denominación.
