"Who are you?" a baritone voice asked me. Once again, I blinked in surprise, and soon I realized that it had been Hale who'd spoken. Where is my best friend from four years ago? I thought as I blushed. This isn't him! "I, um, I'm your neighbor," I managed, swallowing a lump in my throat. He was way too handsome for his own good. I could see the appeal that most of the girls at my high school saw in him for the first time in a very long time. "Oh, nice to meet you. I'm Hale Emery, and your name is…?" he replied confidently and cheerily. That seemed to snap me out of my unintentional daze. I think I may have glared at him, for he laughed. "Cut the crap, Hale. I know you know who I am, Emery," I said with an air of sarcasm. "Oh, I definitely do remember you, Ms. Callahan; I just don't want to remember you," he said with a smirk itching at the corners of his mouth.~~Scarlett Callahan, a regular, high school misfit, used to know Hale Emery, a cliche, high school bad bay, when they were fourteen. In fact, they'd been the best of friends, and Scarlett had been in love with Hale--even though she didn't know it until it was too late, and something horrible had already happened. Four years later, things are quite different between the two. Scarlett and Hale barely notice each other in the school halls, and now, Scarlett hates him.
