chapter 27

it had been two days since hazel and sage fought, and i hadn't heard from either of them. obviously, i knew i wouldn't hear from sage, since we aren't friends anymore. but hazel? i didn't expect as much. i knew she was grounded, but once she didn't show up to the school the next day.. i got kinda curious.

her mom was pissed about hazel getting into a fight. she alwaYs thought hazel was a good girl, good attitude, good grades, all of it. so once she was called up to the school because of a fight? she didn't believe it. and it made it even worse when she talked to the principal and found out hazel wasn't at all what she thought. so, maybe her mom was just so pissed off she didn't want hazel going back to school and getting into another fight. or.. she was suspended. i hadn't heard anything from her since she left school, so i don't know if she was suspended or just in a lot of trouble.

sage was in trouble too, obviously. but since hazel 'started it' it, meaning hit first, she was in more trouble. and sage even came to school the next day, and surely if hazel was suspended, they both would be. right?

"nope, we have to go to her house." i head behind me, making me raise my head from the floor, seeing anna walk up and sit at the table, me, sage, her and hazel all sat at before.. a little less than a month ago.

"anna, that's gonna get her in more trouble." i shook my head.

"well, she's still not here!" she exclaimed, throwing her arms down on the table.

"she's either suspended or.. in a lot of trouble." i told her, thinking that going to her house wasn't the best idea.

"so, we'll make sure. after school." she nodded, completely ignoring me trying to reason with her.

"anna-." i was cut off by the bell, causing she to smile, and stand up. "after school!" she pointed at me, walking off.

i sighed, standing up after her and heading back to the halls. just as i left the door, i ran into someone.
"sorry-."

"cant see or something?" i smiled a little when i saw ashtray, and took a step back. "hey, ash."

"hey, mal." he mocked, making me roll my eyes and start to walk next to him, us having the same class.

"after school i'm gonna go with anna, soo.." i told him, just letting him know so he didn't wait around for me.

he nodded, "what are y'all doing?"

"going to hazels house." i answered, shaking my head at the fact i was going.

he furrowed his eyebrows, "isn't she in trouble or some shit?"

i laughed a little remembering his face when we watched hazels mom practically drag her out of school two days ago. "yeah, i guess we're just gonna check on her."

"okay." he nodded, both of us reaching our class.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

"okay anna i think i can-." i huffed once anna pulled me further down the street, and accepted it.

i wanted to check on hazel too, but i definitely didn't want to get yelled at by her mom.

"her car isn't there." anna pointed to hazels drive way, making me furrow my eyebrows.

"work.. maybe?" i shrugged, but i knew her mom worked out of the city.

i followed behind her as she walked up to the door, turning to me and giving me some kinda look, before knocking on the door and backing up.

her street was complete silence, and so was her house. which only made me more nervous, and once no one answered the door, "okay maybe we should-."

but anna had already knocked on the door again, and this time louder. and soon the door flew open, and we were met with hazel herself.

"hazel! holy shit." i sighed in relief, before my eyes trailed down her body.

"are you okay? you look.. uh tired?" i mocked her from a few days ago, as she leaned on the doorway.

she laughed, "yeah, i am."

i smiled, before wrapping my arms around her. "what happen?" i whispered, as i felt her body stiffen.

once she pulled away, anna hugged her. "just my mom, you know." she tried playing it off like it wasn't a big deal. but she looked like she hadn't slept, and smelt like... alcohol?

"have you been drinking?" i asked, squinting my eyes.

she laughed, moving out of the way so me and anna could walk in, and then pointed to the kitchen counter. "not just that."

i walked over to the counter, seeing a bunch of bags laid there, and three bottles of alcohol. "jesus.."

anna and i shared a look, before she turned around back to hazel. "where's your mom?"

she scoffed, walking over to us. "work. this is her stuff, you know.. mom isn't as perfect as she seems." she laughed, before plopping down on one of the kitchen chair and laying her head down.

i knew hazels mom was big about some things hazel did, but i never thought it would lead to this.

"hey, y'all wanna get drug?" she raised her head up, grabbing a bottle of alcohol and waving it at us with a smile on her face.

"orrrrr..." she dragged out, putting down the bottle and pointing to the bags. "we can try whatever this is."

anna stared at her in shock, and then looked at me. the both of us stayed silent for a couple seconds, before i sighed.

"jesus christ..." i mumbled, going over to hazel.
