For those of you curious of the original novella by J. Sheridan LeFanu, I was able to find it online and publish it in Wattpad form. "Questa storia si legge tutta d'un fiato, sin dalle prime righe si percepisce il Mood che si è destinato a incontrare nella lettura, quel clima di una serena famiglia in procinto di recarsi sul luogo delle tanto attese vacanze mista ad angoscia per quel che potrebbe accadere, tipica del genere [...]All'interno di questa storia, io mi sono sentita coinvolta, travolta in pieno, guidata nell'assaporare queste pagine [...]" La famiglia Moore, originaria della California, è alla ricerca dell'albergo prenotato qualche mese prima nella regione del Nevada, luogo tanto ambito per la loro vacanza estiva. Durante il tragitto, però, riscontrano alcuni problemi: il percorso non è conosciuto da nessuno dei membri, il Wi-Fi è completamente assente e, di conseguenza, non hanno la possibilità di orientarsi tramite un navigatore. La benzina scarseggia nell'auto in cui stanno viaggiando, così il guidatore, Liam Moore, accosta alla prima stazione di servizio disponibile. Qui, uno strano incontro movimenta la serata: la famiglia fa la conoscenza di un benzinaio che ha l'inconsueta caratteristica di indossare un abito elegante - una giacca e una cravatta - nello svolgimento delle sue mansioni. Un contrasto che lascia tutti di stucco. Egli, venuto a sapere dei dilemmi individuati e constatato che l'hotel che i suoi ospiti cercano dista una cinquantina di miglia, offre loro un'occasione per non trascorrere la notte in auto: una permanenza gratuita in un minuto scompartimento di cui il lavoratore dispone nella struttura. Titubanti, Liam, la moglie e i figli riflettono sul da farsi e alla fine assentono alla proposta. Col passare delle ore, una serie di eventi travolgenti li sconvolge e verità e segreti velati dal tempo vengono a galla.
