Broken Dolls {Junpei Yoshino}
Life for Inumaki Shion has always been a quiet affair, through no choice of hers. Born out of wedlock between two jujutsu sorcerers, Shion is quietly hidden away by her mother. The only glimpse into the life her mother led before Shion's birth comes in the form of her father's visits. They're few and far between thanks to his duties and the legitimate family, safe amongst the Inumaki clan. As she grows older, Shion understands that the only reason he returns to visit is thanks to her curse. After all, anyone born with the snake and fang seal needs to understand the power that comes with speech. Without proper training, she finds herself coping the only way she possibly could. Shion does not speak. Not with her mouth anyway and not enough people know sign language to make her life much easier. Her reprieve from her mother's paranoia over curses and sorcerers stealing Shion away comes in the form of sneaking out on her own. It's during these ventures that Shion finds herself face to face with a young man who looks just as alone as she is, despite being surrounded by people regularly. Unsure how to go about asking what causes the lingering sadness in his eyes, Shion keeps their interactions brief, though most go unnoticed by him. At least until Shion stumbles across her kindred spirit crumpled on the ground being kicked by a group of boys far larger and stronger looking than him. One word is all it takes to send Shion careening down the same painful path her mother had attempted to protect her from. FYI there will be some alteration from the anime/manga in Junpei's story. Actually....the entire second half of the book is going to be taking liberties so if you aren't comfortable with that I apologize, but this isn't the book for you. In addition be mindful of any triggers you have. Given the nature of Junpei's story there will be instances of rather violent forms of bullying. Please take into account that this will play a large part in this book as well.
