SkySports: Ex-AlphaTauri driver Danill Kvyat says that Red Bull should "ease up" on McManus criticism.

ABOVE: Former Russian F1 driver Danill Kvyat, who drove for Toro Rosso and AlphaTauri between 2019 and 2021 and was forced to withdraw from the FIA Endurance comeptition over Russia's invasion of the Ukraine.

Former AlphaTauri driver Danill Kvyat took to Twitter today to make a statement about the way that pit crew chief Dakota McManus has been viewed online and in the sports world since the horrific mechanical failure that saw Pierre Gasly retiring from the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix.

"I completely disagree with [Helmut] Marko's remarks." Kvyat begins. "From the start of my tenure with the team, I always thought that Dakota had something special."

Kvyat started at the team when it was still under the Toro Rosso moniker in 2019, the same year that McManus made history being the youngest woman to be appointed to a Formula pit crew at just nineteen years old.

Two days ago, following the Grand Prix in question, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko stated that he believed McManus was too young and lacked experience, and that her promotion to crew chief was 'premature'.

"Dakota is hard enough on herself as it is, I've seen that first hand. In the 2019 Shanghai Grand Prix, one of our cars was retired due to a collision. Dakota beat herself up over it for hours, even though there was nothing she could have done to prevent it." Kvyat goes on to say.

"That summer, during our seasonal break after Silverstone, she begged Franz [Tost] to put her through the necessary training so that she could drive one of our cars herself. She said that there was no better way to learn how to fix a Toro Rosso car than if she drove the car herself. That level of dedication is unparalleled."

Kvyat's final season with AlphaTauri was in 2020, where he raced alongside Pierre Gasly. Most recently, he was forced to withdraw from the FIA Endurance championship over regulations set out by the FIA in relation to Russia's invasion of the Ukraine, but has stated that he will be continuing to support McManus from the sidelines, someone he deems to be a "lifelong friend".

"Dakota McManus is one in a million, especially in this industry. There is nobody who deserves this position more than she does, and if Red Bull can't see that, I think she's better off moving to an organization that can."
