2018 SEASON

AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX, TORO ROSSO GARAGE

DAKOTA'S FIRST PIT CREW DAY

Dakota Elaine McManus got nervous about a lot of things. Too many things, to be honest. But right now, the opportunity of a lifetime was killing her inside.

"I wish you had worn jeans that didn't have holes in the knees." Graham McManus commented, walking next to his granddaughter as the two Queenslanders crossed the Paddock at the Melbourne Grand Prix.

Dakota rolled her eyes. Then eighteen, life had been just a game for her. She'd failed her A-level exams, and was now spending the final year of her education in a trade school. "I'm just going to have to put those coveralls on anyways, Gramps. There's no point."

"It;s about presentation, Kiddo." Graham responded, swiping his Toro Rosso employee card against the back door of the team's garage.

"I'm only going to be here for a day until Jim gets back." Dakota sighed, messing with the hem of the itchy polo shirt she was wearing. The pit crew volunteering had certainly not been her idea, but her grandfather was adamant that the teenager needed to find her true purpose in life. 

Thus, she was here, in the Toro Rosso garage, something that would usually delight her but was no causing nothing but anxiety as she followed her grandfather through the maze of tyres making up the garage wall for easy access should either driver need a tyre change during the race.

Usually the Toro Rosso garage was the source of all of Dakota's excitement, even if they were a lower tier team. Of course, life had gotten busy and nobody in the garage had seen her for a while, so she was shocked when Jake Volkov, her grandfather's young protege, pulled her in for a hug.

"Look at you, Baby Mac, all grown up!" The Russian man laughed. At twenty-nine years old, he as one of the younger crew members, a team made up of few young guns who could manage the newfangled technology the team utilized during the races. The older member sof the team were the engineers and the pit crew, though they were all younger than Franz Tost himself.

"Hello, Jake." Dakota laughed, pulling off her sunglasses. "It's been a while."

Graham put a hand on his granddaughter's shoulder. "Dakota here is going to join us for the day, to fill in for Jim."

Jake whistled. "Curse his daughter for deciding to be born on race day, am I right?"

While Jake and Graham talked, Dakota began to wander around the red and blue garage, taking in the smell of grease and gasoline, the sounds of cars being prepared for the day ahead. A wave of calmness washed over her, and the Aussie smiled as she closed her eyes.

"Cherie, I think you've wandered into the wrong part of the Paddock." A heavily accented voice spoke from behind her. The girl turned around, a grimace on her face.

Pierre Gasly stood behind her, somebody she recognized from her grandfather's work photos. 

"You  must be Pierre." She grinned, holding her hand out. "Dakota McManus, pit crew. I'm definitely in the right place."

The Frenchman raised an eyebrow, but shook her hand anyways. "I think the garage is about to get a little more interesting, mon amour."

Out of nowhere, a scrawny blonde man came up behind Pierre and clapped him on the back, causing the younger driver to lose his balance. "Pit crew?" He looked over at Dakota. "I bet she'd look smoking in a race suit."

"Keep it in your pants Hartley, that's my granddaughter your talking to!" Graham shouted from the other end of the garage, knowing what the young New Zealander was going to get up to.

Laughing, Hartley patted Dakota on the shoulder. "Brendan Hartley, Toro Rosso. But you know that, shortcake."

"Ooh, you;re a Kiwi." Dakota jokingly made a face, referencing the rivalry between Aussies and New Zealanders. "I don't think we're going to get along."

Brendan laughed heartily. "I think we'll get along just fine."

I honestly think that dakota is the love of my life. i've only been alive for twenty-two years, but i think she's the one, mate. i love it when she's happy, when she's in her element. she's the most beautiful person that i have ever met. i'm hoping that by the end of the 2023 season, she'll be dakota tsunoda..."

"not by the end of this season?"

*laughter* "...absolutely not, i'm not brave enough!"
