"Leilani started questioning her sexuality when she was seven years old. Obviously, she didn't know what that meant. So, she didn't acknowledge it, she just figured that it was normal to compare girls to flowers and compare boys to garbage cans. Of course, she didn't know that that's what she was doing. She didn't see anything wrong with how her heart fluttered when girls smiled at her. How her breath caught in her throat when Cassie held her hand to lead her somewhere or how she couldn't help but feel giddy when Kat asked her to stay the night at her house. She didn't find anything wrong with it.

Until she was eight. When she was eight her life changed around her, everything went wrong for Leilani. She walked into her house and everything seemed right. Normal. How dead fucking wrong she was."

Leilani's small hand wrapped around the strap of her backpack. She looked around her large house, wondering where her mom was. "Mom!"

When she didn't get a response, Leilani assumed she must have been asleep. She let her backpack slip off her shoulders and drop by the door, the books inside of it made a loud sound as they hit her hardwood floor.ย  "Mom! Mom?"

Her voice echoed back to her, no sign that her mother had heard her daughter calling for her. She tried once again, "Mom!" But again, she got no response back.

Leilani sighed as she walked up the stairs, her hand brushing against the railing as she turned down the hallways. "Mom."

Her eyes trailed up the fancy paintings her family had hanging on the walls. There was one painting that she hated more than she hated anything else in the world.

She didn't understand why she hated it so much, it was a normal picture. A man, dressed in a knight's uniform, was on one knee kissing the hands of a princess. It was actually quite a beautiful painting, but something about it made Leilani uneasy.

The girl shuddered as she took fast paced steps towards her parent's bedroom. "Mom?"

Her small hand gripped onto the golden door handle, slowly pushing it down. A scream left her lips when she saw it.

Her mom was on top of her father's secretary, and both of the women had their shirts off. "Mo-"

"Honey! Honey, you weren't supposed to be home!" Leilani's mother said, quickly rolling off of the woman. The secretary, Leilani didn't know her name, pulled the blankets over her body to cover herself.

"School.. let out early." She said slowly, "Bad weather."

"Listen, honey," Her mother crouched down beside her, gripping her shoulders. "You can't tell your father about this, okay? You can't tell anyone. No one can know!"

"Why? Who is she.." Leilani's voice was quiet as she stared at the frightened woman laying on the bed. "Why is she in daddy's side?"

Leilani's mother stayed silent as she looked back at the woman. "You wouldn't understand, honey. You're far too young to get it."

"Cheating.. right?" Leilani tilted her head, "That's.. that's wrong."

Her mother's expression changed, "Oh, honey. I-I... This is who I am. I love your daddy, I do. But not.. not how I should."

"You're cheating!" She shouted, trying to pull away from the woman's grasp. "Bad! That's bad."

"Leilani had seen cheating before. One of her friend's parents got divorced over an affair. Leilani knew what it meant. Her mother was a fucking divorce lawyer, after all. Which is super fucking ironic if you think about it. Even if this marriage didn't end in a divorce."

"Why are you cheating on daddy?" Leilani stepped back from her mother's grasp. "Why?"

"Be-Because, honey-" The woman stumbled over her words as she looked back at the secretary.

"You're bad! A bad wife." Leilani said coldly. "A meany!"

Her mother looked angry when Leilani said this. "You don't understand-"

"No! No, mom! You don't understand. You're being a bad person." Leilani cried out as tears began to spill from her eyes. "Why?"

The woman who hid under the covers watched the exchange in silence, not wanting to set off the angry child even more. Her manicured hands gripped the purple sheets as her heart beat harshly against her chest.

"Don't raise your voice at me, young lady. Go to your room!" Leilani huffed as she watched her mother angrily pointing at the door.

"Fine! But I'm telling daddy and you can't stop me!" The girl shouted as she ran out of the room. Her feet carried her into her own bedroom where she threw herself onto the bed and began to sob into her pink silk pillow cases. Lielani hyperventilated as she clutched her teddy bear. Tears stained her cheeks, but she didn't care.

She didn't give a single shit how she looked as she held the bear close to her and cried.

"Leilani did end up telling her dad. It didn't end how she'd expected it to. Her parents didn't get a divorce, they didn't want to tarnish they're oh so perfect image. They slept in different beds now. Different rooms, too. Sometimes Leilani blamed herself for what had happened. Maybe if she didn't tell anyone they'd still be a happy family.

Bullshit. It's bullshit, right? Leilani's dad would've found out, anyway. She just didn't know that. Leilani's life was so fucking messed up."
