the black raven | PROLOGUE

The young woman, only being seventeen, did not know what she had gotten herself into when she had that one night stand. She really, truly didn't.

She didn't know that the boy she was with was infamous for his parents company. She just thought he was any other young man, not someone important.

They so called 'one night stand' went from one night to 4 nights, which became a week. Now, being the self-centered children they were, they started dating.

But obviously, that only lasted one week, once the boy found out that the young woman was dealing, selling, and taking drugs.

He did not want to be a part of that. It just reminded him of Gotham. And Gotham was the city his parents were murdered in. Yes he still lived in Gotham, he would for years to come.

But it was the drugs that connected to the criminals, and the criminals connected to the people who did not want to go to prison.

And the man who murdered the boy's parents was a criminal who did not want to go to prison.

The young woman, who now was left with no one, was devastated. The boy was her only safe place. Her only safe option. Her only safe person.

And he was gone just as fast. And just like that, she was left with only her drugs. Or so she thought.

Β°THREE WEEKS LATERΒ°

By the time she found out about her other half growing inside, she was already knee deep in drug trouble. This was because of the boy. He didn't want her to end up like his parents. Nor like the man who killed his parents.

So, he did the only thing he thought rational. He told her that if she stops he would give her $10,000 to get her life back together, no drugs and a fresh start, plus she wouldn't do it alone. He would help her get through this. She, stubborn as ever, said no for two reasons.

The first reason was because of the drugs; they had her in it's trance.

And reason two: she thought he knew about the baby, and she didn't want his so called 'pity money'.

She thought it was his way of saying "no" to being a father to this baby.

In reality it was a gift of help, from the young man's perspective. From the second he asked her if she wanted the money, she knew her answer.

She said no, and he backed off. He knew that once she said no, she wasn't just saying no to the money. She was saying no to him. So, finalizing their thoughts and feelings about wach other from that short answer, they parted ways.

The boy went on and worked at his parents company and traveled the world for 'fun'. The girl went off to sell, buy, and use the drugs she was notified of.

Β°SIX MONTHS LATERΒ°

The young woman, almost 18 now, had just had her baby at Gotham General Hospital. It was an early one, as she thought she had 3 months to go.

Unfortunately this baby wasn't going to survive three more months. So once she was greeted by the new world, she stayed in the hospital for three more months before leaving.

The hospital let the woman stay, as she knew one of the doctors, and the doctor paid for her expences.

After that, since she had no proper place to go home to, she went from street to street, door to door, looking for someone she could scare.

Someone she could scare into giving their home up for her, but still pay the expenses. This strategy worked quite well, accept for the scare part.

All the owners saw was the baby in her arms, and the fatigued and famished look on the woman's face, and they immediately let her in.

It was just second nature to some to show that level of hospitality. And so, the woman had a home.
And so, she kept going to 'school' until she had 'graduated', all the while living at the place she couldn't call home.

And learning how to take care of a newborn baby.

Β°FOUR YEARS LATERΒ°

The woman had gotten a stable job and got paid a stable amount after she sold enough drugs. And bought a house when her little toddler was four.

She didn't thank the couple who allowed her to stay in their home, she just got up one morning and left. No note, goodbye, nothing. And that was the end of it.

On the other side of the city, the young adult had long forgotten about the woman. He never looked back, not wanting any more pain to come to him.

He had been traveling the world and keeping an eye on his parents business during that four year period.

Oh, and drinking, now that he was twenty one. Not that he didn't drink before the age minimum, it was just he drank more now. But not daily, no, he still had a good hold on his dignity.

Some of the people that called him their friend no longer had any dignity.

But no one cared.

It was Gotham, for God's sake.

She herself had no dignity. Just the higher ranking members of the rich folk. GCPD wasn't doing well. Never had, and never will. Yes they had their wins, but they had more losses.

And in Gotham, winning was the key to staying alive. Well, only for the lucky ones. If you weren't lucky and won, you were dead before you could blink.
