chapter nine

TEACH ME, HAWKS
song not available!

Hawks sauntered to the helpless girl.

He had placed the teenager's phone back on table without ending the call. The voice on the line was cold and rude to him and his bird quirk wasn't helping him either. He knew that what he was going to do was just for pure entertainment and self-satisfaction but who could blame him? Even he didn't know why he was so petty.

"Let me help you with that, babe," he purposely raised his voice so the person on the line could hear. Aiko just lets it be since she was oblivious to the phone call and this was just Hawks's personality - much like how he called her sweetheart.

The jacket in Aiko's hand was quickly taken by Hawks. HeΒ  could see that her wings were bigger than any wings but smaller than his. In contrast to her wings, however, Hawks could manipulate each of his feathers so only his base would be left and he could easily slip into his back holes.

"Relax, babe. If you're so tense then I can't make it fit through your small hole,"

Aiko followed his words in command. She tried to calm herself and relax her tense muscle. Slowly, she could feel her wings lower a little and bunch up like the letter 'M' as always. Now, it was smaller than what it usually was.

"That's right, sweetheart. Just like that," Hawks assured and added a little moan, still smirking evilly. He wanted to make sure that the person on the line could hear everything. He helped Aiko with one side which was successful with the jacket's elastic material but the other side proved to be difficult.

Aiko could feel her muscle tense again, causing her wings to be bigger. When the Pro Hero attempted to squeeze her wings through, the small girl let out a yelp.

"Ah! That hurts, asshole! You're too rough,"

"Oh? Do you want me to be softer then? You're not relaxing at all kid and this hole is so damn tight," Hawks groaned. As much as he wanted to have fun with the prank, Aiko's wings were restraining itself from entering the jacket's holes at the back. It was as if it didn't want to obey any of the two people in the room.

With that, the phone call had slipped by Hawk's mind.

After much groans and yelps of pain, the pair had finally placed the jacket on Aiko. The two took a deep sigh and flopped on each couch respectively, their heads back to lying on the top.

"Even though I'm a Pro Hero that fights off villain and work out a lot everyday, that was a lot of exercise," Hawks stated out loud, his arm muscles aching.

"I agree. I'm tired now because of that. My shoulders hurt," Aiko whined as she tried to massage the ache forming on her back and shoulders. Her wings moved in sync.

They were both jolted out of their seats when an electric voice boomed between them.

"What the fuck was that? Aiko? Are you there? I'm gonna fucking kill that son of a bitch! Hizashi, you're burying his body."

"S-sensei?!"

"Oh whoops. I totally forgot he was still on the line and burying?! I'd rather be frozen to be honest," Hawks mumbled but Aiko could hear him from across.

"You called my teacher?!" She shouted as she tried to reach for her device. There were still shouts of anger from it and Aiko could only guess that Aizawa was on a rampage.

"Actually, he called you. But you were in the toilet so I answered since I was worried something had happened," the winged man corrected her with his index finger pointed at her. Aiko could feel her eyebrows twitch.

"AND YOU DIDN'T BOTHER TELLING ME AFTER ALL THAT?!" She was now shouting. The call could be important seeing that her teacher never calls her unless it was an emergency.

"...I forgot?" Hawks nervously chuckled and brought his two hands up in surrender. He was having too much fun with her reaction but it seemed like the younger girl was worser than his secretary when angry.

Aiko could only let out a huff of anger. She couldn't get mad at the man who gave her shelter during the rain and lets her take a warm shower with clothes he had paid. She took a breath. The Pro Hero now looking forward to her actions. Cautiously, she took her phone to her ears - the sound of mumble was now clearer.

"Oi Shota! I'm telling you cremation is better than burying! No evidence will be left behind!" Hizashi shouted.

"I don't give a fuck about how he ends up. We're torturing him for corrupting Aiko like that."

Aiko rolled her eyes at the two on the line before she interrupted.

"Oi, sensei! Nothing happened so could you please stop orchestrating any unwanted murders?"

"Aiko! Are you okay? Where the hell are you? Who is that guy? What the fuck did you think you were doing? You're just 18!"

Aiko's eyes shifted to Hawks who had walked towards his office door. From her seat, she could see him helping out Mrs Chi to carry some stuff onto the glass table.

"Look, it's not what you think you, pervert. Hawks was just helping me with wearing a jacket. It's a hassle with these stupid big wings," Aiko sighed before rubbing her forehead.

Her peaceful moments from the warm shower had helped her headache smoothed before it began growing after shouting at Hawks. She could see Hawks fumbling with a metal packets.

"Hawks?! PRO HERO #3 HAWKS?! What- why-" Aizawa stuttered.

"God, don't shout at my ears. It's a long story okay? Why did you call anyways and how are you calling? If I recall, both your arms are bandaged," she pointed out. Then, a palm with two pills popped into her vision. She eyed the man offering her the substance.

Mrs Chi could be seen placing two cup noodles and mugs on the table with a small smile on her face.

"Hizashi is holding the phone for me. But I called because Ryo called me,"

Aiko's eyes widened in shock. Immediately, she took the pills from Hawk's palm and drank the warm water from the mug Mrs Chi had placed.

If Ryo called Aizawa, I'm gonna need the pills to hear what happened.

"Ryo?! Is he okay?!" She raised her voice and bit her fingers. Her legs were shaking even though she was seated and she could see the winged hero looking at her worriedly.

"He's fine. He's a smart kid by the way, somehow he got my number through 'means' even though he's at his school," Aizawa spoke.

Okay, that's good. Ryo's at school.

"D-did he say anything? A-about mom?" She nervously asked. She could hear her teacher take in a breath.

"Well...your little brother called crying and screaming for me to find you. He said your mom ran out on you after you guys had a fight? Then he said when your mom dropped him off at his school, she threatened him to never find or look at you until she found a solution. Ryo doesn't know what solution she's talking about and neither do I."

Threaten? Mom threatening little brother?

There was silence after he explained. The office door closed as Aiko saw Mrs Chi walk out.

"What happened, Aiko?" Aizawa's voice was serious. Aiko looked up to see Hawks staring intently at her. She assumed he had seen the fear on her face and how her body was shaking.

Hawks wanted to reach out to her and hold her for comfort but he knew they were nothing more than just strangers; so he opted to look at her and waited for any signal that she needed him.

I guess I have no choice but to tell sensei what happened...but with Hawks..I'm sure he doesn't mind listening as well. It's the least I could do for barging in to his office.

The girl took a deep breath and explained to her teacher, as well as to the Pro Hero sitting opposite of her, what had happened this morning. She made eye contact with the blonde man as she spoke through every word.

Aiko was glad that Hawks was paying attention and listening to her story as if it was just the two of them talking. His eyes were focused on hers, fists clenching now and then when Aiko explained how her mother called her names.

She could also see how his feathers had ruffled when she explained her mother running out and hurting Ryo.

"I see...you can stay with me in my apartment until we sort this out. I have a feeling that I know what made her lash out like that,"

How come Sensei knows the reason but I don't?

"A-alright. I'm sorry for all these trouble, truly I am. Thank you for this, Sensei. I'll see you soon,"

"No problem, Aiko. I'll text your mom that you'll be staying with me though I don't expect a reply. See you," Aizawa informed her, ending the call.

Aiko brought her phone down after hearing the line end. Her eyes trailed to her hands as she didn't want to look up at the winged man.

He probably thinks I'm weird...Or troublesome

"Here, eat some, kid. Unless you hate curry flavour then you can starve to death," He voiced out into the silence, grabbing a cup in his hand and pushing the other towards Aiko. Surprised, she obeyed and grabbed it as well.

She look towards the Pro Hero who was now gobbling down the warm food.

"I-I'm sorr-"

"I think you have beautiful wings," Hawks interrupted, though he was still munching down on his food.

What?

"I disagree with what your mom said. You have beautiful wings. You're not the devil to me, more like an angel,"

Aiko slightly blushed at the comment. He had said it so casually so why was she so bashful for it? She cleared her throat and nodded before taking a forkful of the noodle.

"I kind of seen this coming though. There were small signs or things that made it seem like you didn't know how to use your wings," he pointed out.

Aiko lets out a small 'oh'. Was she that obvious? Her hair fell against her face as she took another forkful.

"Ah~ your hair is in the way. Do you want to eat your hair or what?"

As she ate, she could feel gloved hands taking the fallen hair and placing it around her ears.

Aiko's heart beat. She had never came in close contact with anyone at all for her whole life - the only significant touch she had was a head pat from Aizawa or her own family.

The gloved hand was gone as soon as it came. Aiko could still feel the cool leather material against her cheeks. She quickly shook the thought away. The two ate in silence, embracing the peace and quiet for awhile.

Aiko regretted many things in her life. She regretted stealing cookies from her grandmother when she was young. She regretted hitting Ryo accidentally when he was a kid. She also regretted getting into a fight with a known Pro Hero when she was a rebellious teenager causing her to be stuck in a police station for hours.

This was also one of the moments she knows she will have regrets.

Standing before her were two older men that she was familiar with. Aiko looked back and forth between the two as she rubbed her face tiredly. She decided that she would be staying with her teacher in his apartment until everything between her and her mother had settled.

Hearing this, Hawks insisted on accompanying her reasoning that he didn't want her to be stuck in the rain again or get kidnapped by bored villains (though Aiko believes she could handle it alone). So, they were now situated at the door of her teacher's apartment. Hizashi had opened the door since he opted to help out Aizawa as much as he can after the USJ attack.

Aiko regretted bringing Hawks to meet her teacher. They were two completely opposite people. It wasn't polar opposites like Hizashi and Aizawa where they supported each other; no, they were like rivals. One man looking out for her as a fatherly figure, never wanting her to be heartbroken by the likes of men and the other, wanting to take care of her and be her support until the very end.

The two men glared at each other while Aiko groaned. Hizashi welcomed the both of them, oblivious to the situation.

I swear I saw lightning strike between them or dogs barking from each side.

"Oh? Is this your teacher, kid? No wonder you called him sleeping beauty~" Hawks teased.

Aizawa glared further. He had never heard that nickname from anyone than Aiko but now that he had, he was going to choke every person that called him that.

The girl glanced at her teacher. He was wearing his usual black outfits and he was definitely mummified like when she visited him. Aiko was surprised to see a little of her teacher's eyes in the bandages.

"I am her teacher and I have more rights on her than you. Now run along, #3, I'm sure you got work to do," Aizawa said, moving his body so that Aiko could enter his apartment. Her wings nearly collided the two men causing them to break eye contact before they returned.

"Rights? That seems controlling for a teacher. If you do have rights, you would've taken care of her more instead of letting her wander in the rain alone," Hawks squinted his eyes. This man had natural dominance just like Hawks had so none of them were backing down to being inferior of the other.

"I'm more of looking out for her. You are just a wandering hero. Nothing else,"

That sentence was like a stab into Hawks's chest with knives.

He's right...I'm just Hawks. I'm nothing than just a hero figure to everyone.

Although Aizawa had hurt him, Hawks put up a fake (and annoying) smile to the older man.

"That's mean, sensei. He helped me a lot these past few days. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't know where I would've been," Aiko interrupted.

Hawks made eye contact to the teenage girl as she stared at him. Her eyes held a bit of gratitude. Aizawa grumbled a few words before leaving the scene.

"I guess this is it. I'll see you around, kid" Hawks sighed. It was a usual for him; whenever he helps someone, they thank him and the both of them would be on their own ways, never seeing each other again. He reluctantly accepted the fact that he would never meet Aiko as much as he wanted to. Despite dreaming of her and bumping into her for two days, Hawks was a Pro Hero and Aiko was just a UA student; nothing more.

"Thank you so much for everything you've done, Hawks. You're a great person. I hope you know that," Aiko said and smiled at him slightly.

Surprised, Hawks coughed at his own saliva. He had never seen the teenager smiled for any encounter but the moment she did, he felt his heart beat for a second.

Your smile..is so captivating..and why do you make my hero name sound so good? What's wrong with me?

"A-ah, u-uhm yeah haha. Just hero things you know? I hope everything works out for you between your mom and all about your new wings everything," he rambled. He was appreciative when the younger girl had shared her story back at the office.

The two stood there for awhile, smiling at each other while alternating to smile at the floor as it gets awkward. It was like they didn't want this to be their last goodbye.

Hawks could see her wings flutter a little as she tries to bring it down with her hands as always. He hears her mumble, "Stupid wings always ruining the moment. Why can't you just stay still?"

Hawks's eyes turned to saucers. His shoulders tense and his wings fluffed up as well. He clenched his fist and brought up to the middle in excitement.

I just had the greatest idea. A bingo! No wait, what was the word? Eureka!

"Hey! You said you just grew them right?" He hurriedly asked. Aiko who had just calmed her wings nodded.

"Yeah, on the day we met,"

"Then, you can't control them can you?!"

Aiko raised her eyebrows in question. She didn't know where the Pro Hero was going with these questions.

"Yeah? Are you making fun of me?"

"No! I just have an amazing idea! Let me teach you how to control your wings and use them!" He shouted. His mouth was agape and his whole expression was bright.

He could see Aiko's expression turn into an array of emotions. Confusion, surprise, happiness.

How can I be so dumb?! Hawks have wings, I have wings! He could teach me! He really could! The answer was right infront of me the whole time!

She facepalmed.

"Hawks, you're a genius! You could teach me how to use my wings!" She shouted back. Both of them were smiling in glee and excitement. This was the first good news she's ever had after getting her wings.

"I mean, I wouldn't say a genius but.." He trailed off. Aiko was smiling widely now, her eyes were glimmering and Hawks swears that her joy was contagious because he was smiling as wide as her.

"I-I look forward to your lessons!" Aiko shouted as she bowed.

Hawks panicked.

"I told you I don't do bows kid. Since I'm temporarily posted in this area, I could teach you a thing or two. My schedule isn't that pack anyways," Hawks lied. His schedule was really packed but he didn't mind sacrificing an hour or two of his sleep to teach a fellow wing species (and see Aiko, it's a win-win).

"I'm sorry I forgot you don't do bows. Oh gosh, thank you so much I don't know how I can ever repay you now! Unless you want money?" Aiko rambled. She was definitely anticipating the lessons now that one problem was off her shoulder.

"Money isn't the issue here, kid. I'm willing to just teach you for free. We're like the same species. I understand your struggles and everything. Plus, I could have a new friend since Endeavour and Miruko is busy. In return, I get to choose which lunch we're having on that day," he promised. Aiko eagerly nodded.

"Well, I can't contact my student without their number, can I?" Hawks smoothly said before pulling out his personal phone. The girl suspiciously eyed the device.

"This isn't professional for a #3 hero. Are you sure you can take a phone number? I can give you my email?"

She's naΓ―ve!

"Nah, texting is easier and faster for me. I don't check my email anyways," he said, nudging his phone as Aiko nodded blindly.

The two exchanged phone numbers, their nerves dancing. Both of them only texted their close friends (and family for Aiko) so this gesture was new to them.

β€” ❦ β€”

Hawks left the building with a smile on his face. He had never been content on a single day in his life but today was a record for him. He looks up to the sky which was now clearing up as rays of the sunset was now peeking through the once grey clouds.

Hawks spread his red wings, happier than ever that he got to stretch it out after the gloomy morning. He flapped twice before taking off into the air, leaving a cloud of dust from his spot seconds ago. The smile never leaving his face.

He was reminded of one of the questions Aiko had asked him.

"Why are you doing this? Why are you helping me?"

I don't know, kid. It all seems natural to me but I've never done this before. Maybe because your eyes were so empty, or this is some kind of quirk because of the way you pulled me in and made me curious of you. Maybe it's those wings that I've never seen before that entices me. Maybe it's fate and the dream I had of you was a sign.

Or maybe...it was because I see myself in you..that I never want you to go through what I did. In the end, I still don't know why I'm helping you but I'm willing to do it.

I have a feeling that everything will change at this moment.
