Zart is a Good Boy

Song this chapter reminds me of
// Primadonna// MARINA

I paced around the hallway in the homestead waiting outside the med room. I stopped in front of the door once again, pleading with the person inside.

"Gally can you please let me in!" He shouted back, his voice muffled through the door.

"No way, you'd probably punch me in the face if I do!" I pressed my face against the door.

"Stop being such a baby!" There was a pause.

"You're crazy, you know that! You should be put in the slammer!"

"Ugh!" I kicked the door, which left my foot sore. I stalked out of the homestead. Walking around, not knowing exactly what to do with my free time. I eventually wandered over to Newt and Zart.

They were talking offhandedly as they worked.
Newt was crouched down tying plants to their posts with wire. "Hey." They both looked up at me in sync. Tinges of color spread across Zarts face. He put his head down, trying to focus on his work. Newt nodded.

"Hey." He replied. "What's up? Aren't you supposed to be with the builders today?" I huffed.

"I was. Until I hammered Gally."

"What?!" I rambled on nonchalantly.

"Relax, don't freak. He was trying to show me how to hammer something and I missed. I got his thumb pretty bad. Oh and then I dropped it on his foot." Newt sighed.

"Alright then. I guess you just won another day with the trackhoes." He looked at Zart for approval. "I mean as long as it's okay with Zart." Zarts eyes darted up to mine.

"Oh. Oh yeah it's fine." He seemed to be tripping over his own words. "Okay, um well you can just sit-Er, work right here with Newt." I accepted my fate and sat next to fair haired boy.

"Cool." Zart grabbed something from his gardening bucket. Settling himself next to me he held out gloves. His face flushed a pretty pink.

"I thought you could use these." He said sheepishly. I looked at him curiously.

"Oh. Thanks Zart." He blurted out quickly.

"No problem." I begun my task of weed pulling from a couple of days prior. Zart had wandered off to talk to some of the other trackhoes when Newt whispered in my ear.

"He likes you." Heat spread itself across my face. The back of my neck pricked itself with sweat. I hissed at Newt to keep him quiet.

"Don't be stupid." Newt smirked and said in a singsong voice as he nudged my elbow.

"He likes yoooou."

"Newt, shut up." He grinned wickedly, pleased with himself. He was clearly enjoyed my discomfort in the subject. He began to softly sing the same tune the other boys did from that one dinner.

"You and Zart sittin' in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G." I shot him a warning look. Zart started to stride back over in our direction.

"Shut up. He's walking over here."

"Why?" Newts eyes widened. "Do you like him?!" Zart was nearing us.

"No! Just shut up." He raised his voice volumes in glee.

"You like-" I slapped my hand over his mouth, muffling his speech. I whipped my head over to Zart. I smiled as I restrained Newt.

"Sorry Zart. Newts being an idiot." He chuckled to himself looking everywhere but at me.

"That's not the first time that's happened."

"Yeah." I glared at Newt. "I can tell." Zart offered up a woven basket to me.

"Oh. Well I was just bringing this over for you."

"Thank you Zart." Newt was trying to wiggle out of my grasp. "That's very nice of you." He beamed at me.

"Okay. I guess I'll see you later then."

"Sure." After he walked off, I let go of Newt. He rolled around in the grass laughing. I ignored him, focusing on the garden. "Are you done yet?" He laid sprawled out on the grass, trying to catch his breath.

"Just about." After a few moments of silence he questioned me.

"So. If not Zart, who do you have your eye on?"

"No one." I replied flatly, plucking out weeds embedded with earth. Newt argued with me.

"That's a pile of klunk." I spoke in high pitched voice.

"Oh yes! Because all I need in life is a big strong boy." I threw my hands in the air. "Jesus Christ man, I've only been here a few days and I'm expected to get wifed up?"

"People are gonna get restless. Everyone wants to know who you're gonna choose." I turned to him smiling.

"I choose myself." Newt continued poking at the topic.

"They're gonna start tryin' to romance you." I laughed.

"Let them try. I love gifts." Newt picked at the clovers we sat in, finally silent. The rest of the day zoomed by all the way till lunch. Zart had given me the rest of the day off when I had complained about nonexistent stomach pains. Luckily enough, Chuck had finished his own job up too.

We grabbed some food and headed over to the deadheads. After munching on our sandwiches we sat quietly. I had rested my legs upon a tree, my back stretched out on the grass. I stared up into the vibrant blue sky, soft marshmallow clouds fluffing up the world. The sun washed my skin with warmth.

With my stomach nice and full I felt like I could fall asleep. Like I was floating away from everything and nothing else in the world mattered. Chuck snapped me back to reality.

"Hey no fair. If you go to sleep, I'll be all by myself." I rubbed my eyes and grumbled.

"I can't help it. There's nothing to do."

"You wanna get food?" Chuck suggested. My stomach poked up from everything it had consumed.

"No I'm still full."

"Wanna play Rock Paper Scissors?" I sighed.

"No, we already played that like a bajillion times." My mind wracked around itself, searching for something to do. I picked grass out of the ground, creating a little pile on my stomach. Everything felt dull and same. Is this what it was going to be like everyday? My heart ached, my eyes starting to blur out the scenery.

"I dunno maybe we could make necklaces out of flowers or some klunk." Chucks voice trailed off. Something sparked up inside me, I shot up into sitting position. Feeling a grin starting to grow on my face I said.

"Chuck. I just came up with another one of my brilliant ideas." Chucks face turned itself up.

"What is it?!" I grabbed his hand, pulling him to his feet.

"I'm going to teach you a very valuable life lesson."

------------------------

"I can't find it dude, I'm sorry." Chuck was delivering his lines perfectly. The other gladers were all gathered at the tables for our actual designated lunch time. Gally had even come out of hiding and sat with his builder friends. He threw me dirty looks once in a while, but I couldn't care less.

I was way too focused at the task at hand. Chuck and I pretended to scour around the kitchen area. We weaved between tables talking excessively loud to one another.

"Really?! It's my pearl necklace! I huffed. Chuck crawled around the grass, faking his thorough examinations.

"Nope. It's not here either!" I dramatically threw my hands up in the air, crying out.

"But it's my pearl necklace! It's the one thing I had with me when I came out of the box." Newt eyed me suspiciously.

"What in the bloody hell are you talking about?"

"My pearl necklace Newt." I said this as if it should be obvious.

"You've never had a pearl necklace." I huffed.

"Yes I did. I've worn it like everyday!" Another Glader butted into our conversation.

"No Newt they're right. I remember them wearing it. It had like a gold chain in the back and everything."

"Yeah that's the one I'm talking about! Has anyone seen it?"

"No."

"Sorry I haven't seen it."

"I'll keep an eye out for it." I put the last of my energy into my performance saying.

"Well. We gave it our best shot Chuck." I sighed loudly. "If someone found it I'd be so happy you know." I laughed. "I'd probably even kiss em." Forks clattered. I had them wrapped around my finger. Oh my God, they almost made this too easy. A random guy shouted out.

"Hey do you mean what you say?" I looked up to everyone's glued on to me.

"What do you mean?" I asked. He spoke a little louder.

"If someone found your necklace would you really kiss them?" I giggled, trying to make my laugh as sickeningly cute as possible.

"Yeah, I mean I guess so." Everyone's eyes went wide. Boys clamored left and right.

"I'll find your necklace!"

"Yeah! I'll find it for you!"

"Aw man I'm so gonna score!" They started searching through the grass. Combing through every blade. Boys dispersed in every direction, like ants on a mission for their queen. Alby stood up trying to herd them back.

"Hey! You Slintheads have jobs!" Unfortunately Alby couldn't punish the whole glade for disobeying him so he tired himself of shouting and slumped back in his seat. Grumbling he said. "Stupid Shanks. Yeah do whatever you shucking want. Not like we have rules around here." Chucks face lit up in awe.

"No shucking way. You actually did it. You got everyone to believe you." We decided to sit at one of the best lunch tables, that was now left deserted. I collected all of the cookies Fry had made off of abandoned plates.

"Yup. I told you I could." I took a bite out of one of the cookies. "Life lesson number one right here Chuckie. Boys are so incredibly easy to manipulate. Especially horny and pathetic teenage boys."

I poured us both some lemonade from the filled to the brim pitcher placed on the table. "They're so easy I almost feel bad." A group of boys who were on the hunt for my "necklace" were making kissing gestures to one another guffawing. "Almost."Chuck looked at me, his eyes shining.

"You're so cool. With all of your ideas and stuff...and you're like super wise!"

"I know right. I'm basically like Jesus but Hot."
Chuck spit out his lemonade, almost choking in the process. I patted his back like I was burping up a baby.

"Are you okay?!" He looked up at me coughing as he grinned.

"Yeah. I'm just dying." We both cackled, feeding off of each other's laughter.

"Glad to see you two are enjoying yourselves." We turned to see Gally hovering around us. He was unconsciously cradling his thumb in his hand. "Shouldn't you be looking for your precious little necklace too?"

"I can't. It'd be impossible to." Gally narrowed his eyes.

"What do you mean? How is it impossible?" I dawned a slight tight-lipped smile.

"Because there is no pearl necklace. There's never been a pearl necklace." Gally twisted his mouth.

"You're kidding right." I propped my feet on the table, smugly putting my hands behind my head.

"Serious as a funeral Wonder Boy." Gally knitted his brows.

"Why would you do that?"

"I was bored, duh."

"But you just threw a whole work day for us out of the window." I snickered.

"Uh yeah. That's why you should be thanking me." It was hilarious watching Gally try to lecture me as he held onto his bruised thumb.

"Do you have any idea of what you've done."

"What? I've given everyone something to do, something new to talk about, and something to daydream about. I'm basically like Santa." Gally's mind clicked into place, finally understanding.

"I mean, I guess you're right?"

"Right I am. Take a seat and join us my friend." Gally reluctantly sat down. He eventually took a cookie for himself. I gestured towards his hand. "How's you're flesh wound holding up." I fell back on my usual sweet sarcasm. "Are you dying?!" Gally rolled his eyes.

"No, I am not dying. Thanks for asking though." Feeling a little guilty I asked.

"Okay how about for real. Does it still hurt?" He glanced down at his thumb.

"Yeah." Leaning forward towards him I said.

"I really am sorry. I didn't mean to hammer you." Gallys usual brooding face eased itself.

"It's okay. I guess I forgive you for now."

"My conscience is clear! That means I can do more shitty things!" I clapped my hands together. "Yay!"
