CHAPTER TEN:
HANG ON

SHE HELD A HAND OVER her wound, the bullet having hit her on the shoulder instead of the head where he had been aiming before Sage had burst into the room, making the man jump in surprise and cause his aim to be off. Sapphire looked at the woman who had been quick to place a bullet between the guards eyes before looking at Sapphire, shaking her head as she let out a soft sigh.

"I told you not to be stupid for the next twenty-four hours." The woman spoke, stepping over the body to walk up to her. Sapphire gave the woman a sheepish smile.

"It was an accident."

"Oh, I'm sure." Sage muttered, rolling her eyes before nodding for the woman to follow her. "Come on." The two women walked out, and as Sapphire walked by the dead man, she bent down and took his gun from his grasp. The two women walked down the halls, keeping a look out as they held their weapons close to their person. Sapphire occasionally glanced down at her wound, noticing it was only bleeding more and more. She clenched her jaw, and didn't say anything. That was when the alarms started to blare in the facility. The two females looked up before looking at one another.

"Shit." Sage mumbled. "We gotta hurry. They'll be looking for you, and for the person who helped you break out." With that, the two started running. They stopped briefly, noticing the gunshots that were coming from everywhere. Sapphire furrowed her eyebrows.

"Where the hell are the gunshots coming from?" The girl questioned.

"Obviously your friend doesn't understand the meaning of discreet." Sage muttered.

"You mean Melinda?" Sage simply nodded her head in response. "Melinda is discreet about everything. It's probably the idiots she brought with her that weren't discreet." The two women continued running until they ran into a group of HYDRA men shooting their guns at them. The two quickly his behind the corner wall, glancing at one another before Sage nodded her head and moved around the corner, shooting at the guards. Sapphire stayed behind the corner enough so that she had protection when they shot at her. The two quickly killed all of the agents before starting their trip once more. Sapphire could feel herself becoming dizzy.

"Daniels, I'm bleeding a hell of a lot." Sapphire shouted over the blaring of the alarm and the shots that continued to ring all throughout the building.

"I'm going as fast as I can." Sage promised the woman just as a HYDRA agent came up to them. Sage quickly kicked them in the stomach before wrapping her legs around the guards neck and a flipping him to the ground, deeming him unconscious. Sage grabbed the woman's arms before making it to the doors, using her leg strength to kick them open and help Sapphire into the outside world.

Sapphire was blinded for a few moments. It was dark, yes, but the moon and stars were especially bright that night, and Sapphire hadn't breathed any outside air since January. The woman stumbled slightly, Sage quick to grab her before she could fall to the ground. So much blood was coming from her shoulder, the girl was about to pass out. Sage noticed this and grit her teeth before pulling the woman closer to her.

"We're almost there." Sage assured her. "Just hold on for a few more minutes." The two continued through the woods that surrounded the HYDRA base, stopping upon noticing a certain S.H.I.E.L.D. agent standing there. Melinda looked at her best friend, an overwhelming feeling of relief flooding her body as she ran towards the two. She looked at Sage, nodding at the woman who nodded back.

"Thank you." Melinda told the woman. Sage offered a small smile.

"No problem." Sage glanced towards Sapphire before looking back up at Melinda. "She's lost a lot of blood."

"I'll get her fixed up." Melinda spoke. She looked at Sage for a moment before saying, "You coming with?"

"I'll catch up." Sage nodded. Melinda nodded in response before walking away from the duo and back towards the HYDRA base.

Melinda looked at her bestfriend, securing her hold on the woman. "Be glad I care about you, Simmons. Because never again."

Sapphire let out a small chuckle. "I've missed you too, M." Right after she said that, her eyes rolled to the back of her head and she passed out. Melinda quickly caught the woman before carrying her bridal style and quickly made her way back to the jet. She buckled Sapphire in, looking at her best friend for a moment and taking note of the changes that had taken place. Sapphire looked so lifeless. So weak. So unhealthy. It made the woman's jaw clench in anger.

Melinda placed a hand on the woman's shoulder. "Hang in there, Saph. We're going home." Melinda quickly got situated in the pilots seat, flicking a few switches before quickly taking off and heading back towards base.
