21: Basketball tension

"This is the famous, Palm Woods park." I say, with a hand over my forehead to block the sun.

"Cool." He nods.

"You wanna play some basketball?" I ask.

"No way, you play?" He asks in shock.

"Yeah, for four years with my brother. He was the team captain at his school." I say.

"I'm sure he was a great player." He states and I grin.

"Race you to the courts!" He exclaims and I speed off with him.

"Shit." I mutter as I catch up with Nate.

"What?" He asks, raising an eyebrow.

"Kendall and Skylar are there." I say, crossing my arms.

I see Skylar trying to get the ball from Kendall and she laughs, giving up.

Kendall has a big smile on his face and just laughs at her.

"Wait, do we even have a basketball?" I ask, turning to him.

"Found one." He says, running over by the fence and finds a scuffy ball.

"I think that's someone else's." I chuckle, crossing my arms.

"You're right, I feel bad now. Why don't we ask Kendall if we can join him?" He suggests.

"Oh no, that's okay. I don't wanna intr-"

"It'll be fine, c'mon." He says, grabbing my hand and brings me over.

"Hey bud, do you mind if we play a game with you guys?" Nate asks, raising an eyebrow at Kendall.

"Sure, we don't mind. Right Kendall?" Skylar says, turning to him.

"Yeah, you wouldn't mind, would you Kendall? Unless you're scared?" I hear Nate mutter the last part to him.

Okay, something is going on.

I wonder what Nate said to Kendall that made him act out earlier.

"Why would be I scared? Bring it. You're serve." Kendall states with a smirk.

He then roughly throws the ball at him.

I can tell it was a hard pass because the ball made a loud noise against this chest.

"Excuse me for a second." I fake grin and yank Kendall into the corner.

"Okay, what is going on with you and Nate?" I say through gritted teeth.Β

"Why don't you go ask him yourself." He says, looking down at me.

"Hey." I state, lifting his head with my finger under his chin.

He looks up at me and his green eyes lock into my blue ones.

"Just tell me the truth." I breathe, pulling my finger away from his chin.

"At the juice bar, Nate said he wanted to steal you from me and that he plans on destroying your career. He said if I said anything, bad things would happen to you. And also, I knew you wouldn't believe me." He says, shaking his head.

"Kendall, that is the most craziest thing I've ever heard." I scoff.

"See, I knew it." He sighs, running his fingers through his hair.

"It's taking every bone in my body not to rip his vocal chords out of the throat." He says through gritted teeth, clenching his fists to his sides.

"Why don't you just do it then?" I state, walking closer to him.

"I don't want you to be afraid of me." He snaps, walking closer to me.

"Oh, so now you care about what I think of you? You didn't care when you beat up Jackson." I say.

"Still not letting that go?" He scoffs, shaking my head.

"How can I? He was my first love!"

"Love? He fucking hit you. That's not love." He says.

"Like you're some love expert." I roll my eyes.

"I didn't say that but I know love in a relationship isn't abuse!" He fires back.

"I see why Jo left." I scoff.

"What did you just say?" He says, slowly getting up in my personal space.

My breath hitches for a second and I just sense him clenching his fists even harder.

I close my eyes for a second, waiting for any impact from him but nothing came.

I open my eyes and I look to see his eyes getting glassy.

"I'm done. Whatever this is, and with you." He states and turns on his heels, walking away.

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and I calmly walk back over to the court.

"What happened?" Nate asks.

"Nothing. Just a little argument." I clear my throat to hold back the tears.

"Okay. No game then." Nate says and Skylar frowns.

"I'll catch up with you later, okay?" I tell Nate and he nods and I scurry away, trying to get to the lobby.

I messed up, big time.
