Chapter 3:Darrius Mitchell

Caleb and I had been partners for a week. We still didn't get along but we were making progress. Today, we luckily got all our points.

But we got into an argument in the hallway once class was over.

"I did all the work, so you're welcome!" Caleb yells getting into face.

"Boy you didn't the solutions to put in, so why you talking about!" I retaliated, barely pushing him out of my space. He countered by shoving me back and his friend Evan Charming came over to stop us while my little brother assisted in pulling us away from each other. I gripped on to his gray loose tank trying to get back to my target but he wasn't having it as he pulls me in the opposite direction.

"Why do you guys always end up fighting, I mean it's getting kind of old," Marcus stated as I walked him to his photo taking class. He was really into that artsy stuff and was actually pretty good at it. Just wished that he would stop trying to get me to understand his relationship with Caleb.

"I know but he just gets under my skin," I expressed letting out an irritated groan. Marcus then turns to me and asked, "You remember when I was five and that fat piece of shit Donald kept hitting me?"

Of course I remembered, he would come home crying with small bruises on his arm. It took me a couple of weeks to figure out who it was but once I did, Chris and I went ape shit on him. I smiled thinking about the damage we did.

"Yes I remember," I answered leaning against the wall with my arms folded, "Me and Chris tore his ass up!"

"You mean you, Chris, and Caleb right? Hmmm," he stated putting his index finger on his lip pretending to think. I glared at him for correcting my memory. I had forgotten all memories of Caleb ever since that day. I erased him like he probably did to me. I scoffed, "What's your point?"

His lip straightens as his hazel eyes darted back at me, "My point is even though you and Chris erased him from memory doesn't mean I have. I remember all the parties, sleepovers, and hangouts that you guys did. You guys were truly best friends and you let one small mistake turn you against each other. "

I didn't respond because even though I could remember everything, the good was overshadowed by the bad things Caleb and I did to each other over the years. Marcus's teacher walked over to the door to open it so I knew he had to get into class because he wanted a good camera.

"All I'm saying is that at a point in time, Caleb was your best friend and you guys got along," Marcus stated, "So just try to go back to that time and try to get along again. I'll see you at lunch."

"You know I'm supposed to be your big brother right?" I joked with him as he looked over his bare shoulder and poked out his tongue as he walked into class.
Marcus was more than my brother, he was my best friend and he understood how I operated. However he still trusts people way too easily. I'm not saying his naïve but he's a very nice person and I don't want anyone to take advantage of it. This is the reason why I don't want him to talk to that bitch Caleb.

But I'm going to lie. I stood there for a minute thinking about what he said. Caleb and I were best friends but him peeing on me wasn't the only bad thing he did to me. Over the years he did a lot but so did I. So does that make me the same as him? Are we even now?

My head begins to hurt from thinking so I walk to my programming class. It was something about making codes that excited me. That was why I took a job at Best Buy as one of the people that helped fix the electronics. Walking into class, I sat at my usual computer as the teacher wrote down the programs we were making that day.

I was finished before anyone else so I sat and played on the computer. I have always been a tech person even when I was a kid. I broke and fixed every electronic thing in my Aunt Ruby's kitchen. She would get mad at first but then become really impressed when she sees me put them back together. Even though basketball was a sport I loved, I still had to be good at something if that doesn't fall through. As I had time and I was checking my phone, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned to see it was Mr. James, my programming teacher.

He seemed a little young but I guess the school was running low on old boring teachers so they decided to hire someone new. I kind of got his style pinned from last week of class. He liked to wear collar shirts with black slacks. However, his shoes were always sneakers or loafers.  He was actually pretty laid back which was why I had my phone out in front of him.

"Mr. Mitchell?" Mr. James begin, "Are you done with those programs I wrote on the board?"

"Yes sir I am," I said giving myself a pat on the shoulder. He grinned and asked to check to see if they worked. I gave him an quizzical stare and he pulled them up to see for himself. From the look on his face he seemed genuinely impressed with my work.

"This is really good Mr. Mitchell," He expressed and I cockily laughed saying, "Well you know how I do?"

"Actually since I've only known you for a week, I don't," he stated matter of factly, "However from these programs and the ones we did last week I'm starting to get it."

He smiled and walked over to another student. At that moment I felt kind of accomplished. Even though they weren't real life programs I still felt like I was being praised. Not even my boss gave me credit for fixing phones. After a few minutes from playing on my phone, the bell sounded for lunch.

"Darrius!" I heard Chris yell from our table and as I begin to walk over with my tray, I saw Mr. Gonzalez coming my way. As quickly as possible I tried to get away but he somehow ended up right in front of me.

"Hello Mr. Mitchell," he said wearing the usually button down shirt and khaki slacks, "Were you trying to avoid this confrontation between us?"

"No!" I stated bluntly lying and being sarcastic, "Why would you think that?"

He grinned, "You and Mr. Johnson are so funny, that is why you two should sit together."

Looking around the cafeteria and my eyes landed on Caleb's table but surprised to see that he wasn't sitting there.

"Well it looks like he's not at lunch today sir, so I'm afraid we can't do that," I answered happily which only made him smile.

"Well aren't you in luck, he's in my classroom right now," He said wrapping his arm around me and guiding me towards his classroom. At that moment I knew there was no way around getting out of this. Chris and our friends looked on confused as I walked out of the cafeteria with Mr. Gonzalez.

As we entered the classroom, I saw Caleb sitting there with the same exact look of disdain on his face. I was planning to sit at a far table but I knew Mr. Gonzalez wasn't going for that. As soon as I was about to sit, he gave me a glare and I instantly moved to where Caleb was sitting.

"Very smart Mr. Mitchell," Mr. Gonzalez stated sitting down and he begins to grade papers leaving Caleb and I to entertain ourselves. Sitting next to somebody that you don't want to, can make time go by extra slow. As I watched the clock I saw how agonizing it was for a minute to pass. I groaned wishing I could move time forward. Then I heard Caleb speak.

"I'm sorry," Caleb stated. I looked at him confused. Was he apologizing for this morning or the unfortunate event that we had to eat lunch together?

"Huh?" I spoke back, "What are you talking about?"

He rolled his eyes I guess out of irritation. I don't know what he could be apologizing for so he shouldn't get mad.

"I'm apologizing for everything because obviously, we aren't getting a passing grade in this class until we learn how to get over our differences," he expressed, "So I am going to be the bigger person here and say...I'm sorry for peeing on you in the fifth grade. I was just-"

"Save it!" I snapped, "If it's not a real apology I don't want to hear it man!"

"It is dumb shit!" He yelled back and I could see Mr. Gonzalez ready to break us up if we do get into another fight, "I really am sorry for doing that to you. That wasn't even how it was supposed to go down anyway. I just...I got so nervous and I ended up losing one of my best friends."

Hearing those words come from him was like someone hitting me with a bowling ball in the gut. What does he mean it wasn't supposed to go down like that? I didn't know whether to punch him or hug him. He still had to explain things for me to even consider forgiving.

"Explain," I said with my hand on my forehead," What do you mean it wasn't suppose to go down like that?"

He looked at me taking in a deep breath and said, "Michael told me to show you my penis and that's all. It was mostly supposed to embarrass me and not you. I was so nervous that everyone was going to laugh that I...accidentally peed on you."

I heard a snicker coming from Mr. Gonzalez's desk but I didn't know what part he was laughing at. I turned to Caleb hoping to find if he was lying to me. As I looked into his eyes, I knew the guy I met back in grade school was still there.

"I swear on my parent's grave I never meant to embarrass or hurt you in any way," He stated honestly making me feel chills going down my spine. He loved his parents and he obviously wanted us to get along so taking a breath I held my hand out.

"Truce man," I said and I could see Mr. Gonzalez looking at us, "This has gone on too long and I'm ready for it to be over and done."

"Seriously?" He asked and I nodded at him. Slowly but surely he shook my hand. This actually felt pretty good. I was still skeptical and will keep my guard up because of everything that has happened. However, I am willing to try to work at it.
