The Past

ElARA BLACKTHORNE'S POV

I, Elara Blackthorne, am proud to proclaim myself as a loyal servant to her Royal Highness, whom I owe my undying gratitude for being my ultimate savior. Allow me to recount a tale of my past that once was as ordinary as anyone else's, filled with a loving family, caring friends, and the simple pleasures of life. It was a time when my days were spent in revelry and laughter, and my nights were serene and peaceful. However, little did I know that destiny had other plans for me, and a calamitous turn of events would transform my life in ways I could never have imagined.

I resided in a serene hamlet enveloped by a remarkably empathetic populace, a closely bonded band of individuals who exuded an unwavering spirit of benevolence and fellowship. Though the village was petite in size, it radiated a familial glow that extended far beyond its geographical limits. So deeply intertwined were we that we knew each other's identities and histories, and were sincerely invested in each other's holistic wellbeing.

There was something special about this community that went beyond the conventional definitions of friendship and family. The people there were genuinely concerned about each other's well-being, and this was evident in their day-to-day interactions. Whether it was lending a helping hand in times of need or simply offering a kind word to brighten someone's day, the residents of the hamlet exemplified the true meaning of compassion.

But life in the hamlet was no walk in the park. As with any closely-knit community, it encountered its fair share of difficulties and obstacles. Yet, what made our village unique was its steadfast ability to persevere through the toughest of times. Even when the going got rough, the villagers stood firm in solidarity, rallying together to brave the storm and ultimately emerging with greater strength and unity than ever before.

When I reflect on the nature of my kinship, I am immediately transported back to the cozy embrace of my childhood home. At the very heart of my family were three individuals who shaped my world in profound ways. My mother, with her gentle yet unwavering love, was the pillar of our household. My father, with his kind and caring nature, was always there to offer a comforting shoulder to lean on. And then, of course, there was my little brother, whose infectious joy and boundless energy could light up even the darkest of days.

Together, the four of us formed a tight-knit unit that was unbreakable in its love and support for one another. In the safety and security of our family, I found a sense of belonging that I have carried with me throughout my life. Every hug, every kiss, and every kind word shared between us reinforced the bonds of love and kinship that we shared.

And while we may not have had a large extended family to speak of, I never felt alone or lacking in any way. In fact, I considered every person in our small community to be my kin. Whether it was the friendly shopkeeper who always had a kind word to say or the neighbor who was always willing to lend a helping hand, I knew that I was surrounded by a web of love and support that extended far beyond the walls of my home.

However, all of it came crashing down at the hands of a notorious gang of bandits. It was a day like any other, with the sun beaming down on the rustic roofs and the birds chirping their sweet melodies in the background. We, the residents of our small, secluded village, had all gone about our daily tasks with the usual cheer and optimism that marked our community. But fate had other plans in store for us that day. In the blink of an eye, everything came crashing down, as a notorious gang of bandits descended upon our village like a swarm of locusts, leaving behind nothing but destruction and despair in their wake.

The tranquility of our village was shattered by the screams of women and children, the sound of breaking glass, and the sight of men being beaten and dragged away from their homes. Even to this day, the mystery of why they chose to target our secluded village remains unsolved. Despite our poverty and lack of material possessions, the one thing we cherished the most were the unbreakable bonds we shared. But alas, those foolish marauders stripped away everything I held dear - my cherished connections and the people who meant the world to me.

My mother had whisked my brother and me away to a subterranean basement, a concealed haven so obscure that even I had been unaware of its existence. The wooden façade had been seamlessly integrated into the surroundings, rendering it virtually imperceptible. However, the space was limited, and only my younger brother and I could fit within it, while my parents diverted the bandits' attention far from our hideout in a desperate attempt to ensure our safety. Even now, the words my mother imparted to me before departing still resonate within me: "Survive."

As my parents valiantly fought off the bandits, my brother emerged from the hiding spot, propelled by a combustible mixture of hatred and madness. Though I could have tried to stop him, my own terror had brought me to my knees, leaving me powerless to intervene. After all, I was just a mere twelve-year-old with no combat training to speak of. So I stood by, watching as my brother charged towards our parents and the peril that awaited them.

I found myself in the throes of unspeakable horror, the crippling fear that engulfed me was like nothing I had ever experienced before. I was paralyzed, my body trembling uncontrollably, as if it had a mind of its own. The world around me was crumbling and shattering into a million pieces, leaving nothing but chaos and destruction in its wake. The once-familiar surroundings were now unrecognizable, as if I had been transported to a different dimension altogether.

The sudden loss of my parents and brother had left me stranded, isolated and all alone. Their absence was like a gaping wound that refused to heal, a constant reminder of the pain and suffering I had endured. I felt as if I had been ripped away from everything I held dear, leaving me stranded in a desolate wasteland of emotions. As the bandits' ruthless assault continued, the screams of my loved ones slowly faded into oblivion, replaced by a deafening silence that seemed to stretch on forever. The only sounds that filled the air were the crackling flames and the moans of the wounded, as the bandits continued their merciless rampage.

In the chaos, they departed without realizing that I still drew breath. I was left behind, alone and frightened, uncertain of what the future held. My heart was heavy, and tears streamed down my face as I tried to comprehend the enormity of the loss I had suffered. The world around me seemed bleak, and the future looked uncertain. Nevertheless, I refused to let despair consume me. With no other choice but to carry on, I clung to my mother's parting words as a beacon of hope. Her solemn pledge to survive, to endure, echoed in my mind, urging me to push forward, no matter what lay ahead.

And so, with a heavy heart and a determination to survive, I embarked on a journey of uncertainty. I wandered from place to place, seeking shelter and sustenance wherever I could find it. The days blended into weeks, the weeks into months, as I traversed countless villages, cities, and even nations. Each step I took was a leap of faith, a test of my resilience and determination. I encountered many obstacles along the way, but I refused to give up. The memory of my mother's words gave me strength and a sense of purpose, reminding me of why I needed to keep going.

Even so the world that I had once been familiar with bore no resemblance to the one I now find myself in. It was a world where there were creatures that stood above all other races, wielding powers beyond comprehension. They could make the earth tremble with a single step, their mere presence striking fear into the hearts of those who dared to challenge them. These were not just any ordinary creatures, but rather beings that had the power to reshape the very fabric of reality with a single flick of their fingers. They could summon tempests that could lay entire nations to waste, or create miracles that would leave even the most seasoned scholars scratching their heads in amazement.

The sky itself seemed to bow down to their will, obeying their every command. The sun, moon, and stars all danced to the tune of their powers, as if they were mere playthings in the hands of these godlike beings. The mountains and valleys, the rivers and oceans, all were subject to their whims, changing form and function as they saw fit.

As fate would have it, it seemed that the universe had conspired against me in a most unexpected way. In a stroke of chance, I found myself in the presence of one of those very beings. To this magnificent being, I was nothing more than a lowly worm, unworthy of even the slightest acknowledgement. It was as if my very existence was sullying the ground beneath his lofty feet. In that moment, as I stood before this towering figure, I felt a sense of resignation wash over me. I had struggled for so long, fought so hard to survive, only to be met with this dismal end. Death was looming, and I knew that there was nothing more that I could do.

But then, in a moment of pure and utter magic, a wondrous figure descended from the heavens, radiating an otherworldly luminescence. It was as if the very stars themselves had conspired to create this being of pure light and beauty. In that moment, I knew that I was in the presence of true majesty. Even in the company of Lyra, the splendor of this celestial being outshone them all. It was as if the very fabric of reality had shifted, and the world had become a place of pure wonder and awe. And as I gazed upon this magnificent being, I knew that there was hope. I knew that I could go on, that my struggles had not been in vain. For in that moment, I had been touched by something truly divine.

"Oh my, what is a human doing here?" she spoke those words with such ease and nonchalance, as if the very notion of my inevitable demise was but a trivial matter. It was as if the looming threat that hung over me like a dark cloud held no sway over her demeanor or state of mind. Even in the face of the towering and imposing figure before her, whose fearsome might was enough to send shivers down the spines of many, she remained unperturbed.

Her gaze remained fixed on me, unyielding and unwavering, and I found myself entranced by the bewitching scarlet orbs that stared back at me with an intensity that left me feeling exposed and vulnerable. There was something about the way she looked at me that made me feel as though I was the only person here, as though nothing else mattered but the connection we shared in that moment.

And then there was that subtle upturn of her lips, the merest hint of a smile that played at the corners of her mouth. It was a gesture so small, so fleeting, that I might have missed it entirely had I not been so captivated by her gaze. But there it was, a tantalizing hint of something more, something that hinted at a deeper understanding between us.

As I stood there, lost in a trance, I couldn't help but wonder what it was about her that made her so fearless, so unflappable in the face of danger. Was it the confidence that came from within, a deep-seated belief in her own abilities and strengths? Or was it something more, something intangible that defied explanation and left me feeling even more vulnerable than before?
