Epilogue

[Epilogue]

[Six years later]

I stand at the isle, my hands shaking and my body sweating intently. There’s never been a time in my life when I’d been more nervous, not when Owen and I had our first kiss, not when we were fighting for custody, not even on my first day of school had I been this much of a wreck.

All of my fears fade away as Owen smiles encouraging at me. “You can do this.” He whispers so only I can hear him.

I roll my lips into my mouth and nod stiffly. I believe him, this is something I can do.

As the priest says speaks and we say our vows I look into the audience. My mother, her husband and Kate all sit amongst the people. They wave at me and I smile brightly back at them. When I sent mum the invitation I never expected her to actually come, you could imagine my shock when they turned up at our door the morning before the wedding.

Another familiar face sits in the sea of people, Byron. Although he’s a lot older when we last met he still has the wide bright smile that makes anyone want to smile back. He holds the hand of an unfamiliar man and a wave of happiness shocks me. I’m glad that he has someone that he can care for and look after; he needed someone like that in his life.

Nico stand behind me as my groom-man and Floyd as my best man. They offered the titles without giving it a second thought. They were thrilled that Owen and I had decided to get married and they weren’t the only ones.

Right now with all of the smiling faces around me and the excited chatter I imagine Drew standing beside me with his trademark one sided smile on his face. He bumps our shoulders together and jokes about me no longer being a free man. But then his laugh fades.

“This day is one to remember forever.” He says in a whisper like the wind, “I’m proud of you.”

He places his hand on my shoulder gently and the coldness of it numbs my skin through the suit. I look up to meet his wide smile and that’s when he begins to fade.

“Are you alright?” Owen asks.

I shake my haziness away and smile up at him, “Couldn’t be better.”
