___________^___________^___________

Dream, Ink, and Nightmare were all at Ink and Errors house. Though, Error recently moved out, now living at Nightmares Mansion with the others. Nightmare didnt particularly agree with this, but he didn't have a choice. Dream was on the line.

They were sitting at the table, silently chewing their meals. It was awkward, and eventually someone had to break the silence.

"So..." Nightmare started, "hows the breakup doing?"

Dream shot him a dirty look. Nightmare started to sweat.

"W-Wait n-never mind." Nightmare stuttered. "Uh.. how is PaperJam..?"

Dream knew Nightmare wasn't good with conversation, sighed, and took over the conversation.

"You dont have to talk about anything if you dont want to, Ink. Have you drawn anything recently?" Dream tried changing the subject.

"N-Nothing of importance.." Ink blushed lightly.

"You know, I love your drawings! Mind if I see some?" Dream proposed.

Ink sighed and nodded as she pulled her sketchbook out of her sash. She showed Dream and Nightmare some pages, there was a picture of Classic, as a really cartoony version, his eyes big, and his smile almost bigger than his skull. Dream liked that one the most.

There where others, like Blue, Dream, and Ink all huddled under blankets together, when Night saw the stars in Outertale for the first time with Ink, but, as Ink flipped through his notebook, he noticed the chunk of papers he had skipped. He showed more pictures after that like it was normal.

"Can I see the sketchbook?" Dream asked. Ink shook his head violently, hugging the sketchbook close to him. I decided to back off for a while.

~....Time Passes....~

Suddenly, PaperJam walked down the stairs to see them all chatting and laughing together.

"Daddy?" PJ called out. Ink shot his head up and looked over at him.

"Jammy? You need something?" Ink asked, patting the seat next to him. PJ took that as an invatation to come and sit next to him.

"Oh, hi Dream!" PaperJam waved, a bit embarrassed that he had called his father "Daddy" in front of him. As he sat down, he spotted NM at the other end of the table, and he tucked under Inks arm, hugging him. PaperJam stared at Nightmare, giving NM an unsettling feeling.

They were all confused at Jammy's action. Everyone but Nightmare. He knew exactly what PJ was worried about. His slimy tentacles dropped to the ground. His face became droopy, and he excused himself from the table.

"Wait, Night, something wro-" Dream got cut of by Nightmare slamming the door shut. It was a powerful slam, making the picture frames on that wall shake. All the pictures were all things Ink drew, and Error hung them up on the wall. They were slowly starting to be taken down, though.

"S-Stay here, please." Dream murdered, pacing out the door. Jammy looked up at Ink.

"D-Did I do something wrong?" PJ whimpered. Ink sighed and shook his head.

"Your fine." Ink mumbled.

PJ could hear the tenseness in his father's voice, and continued, "I'm sorry... I didn't mean to hurt them..!"

"Hunny, you didn't hurt them. Ok? Nightmare has been through a lot lately, and I know your scared he might do that again to you, but I promise, he is trying to be better. He won't do that again to you..." Ink proclaimed, trying to ignore the fact that he will be forced to fight them, anyway.

When Nightmare still lived in his mansion, he did some.... unremarkable things. He did things like kidnap PJ, fight him, scare him, torture him, it was terrible. PaperJam, right now, is only 8 years old. NM did these things when he was 6 or so. It was really scarring.

"Hey, how about we get ourselves some Nice Cream?" Ink proposed, trying to change the subject as fast as he could. His voice, pessimistic and shaky. PJ nodded joyfully and they both got up and waltzed to the freezer.

~....Back Outside....~

Dream cracked the door open, peeking in on what Nightmare was doing.

"I'M TRYING TO CHANGE!" Nightmare screamed into the dimly lit, cloudy sky. "WHY DOESN'T ANYONE ACCEPT THAT?" That shook Dream. Now he realized why PJ was scared.

Dream hated those memories. He is so happy, so, so happy, that his brother is like this now. It took some extreme practice, but his brother pulled through. Some of those dark days, Dream just felt like ending it all. He wanted to forget about those memories, but he wanted his brother to forget about them more than himself.

Nightmare slumped down onto the patio's staircase. He stuffed his head into his hands, trying his best to stay calm. He was shaking, breathing heavily. Dream wanted to go comfort him, to the point of shaking, but he stood his ground.

Dream knew the truth. At some point, he won't be there to help Nightmare. He didn't, no... they both didn't want it to be true, but the cold truth was sneaking up on them faster than they could keep up with.

Dream coughed quietly to himself, trying not to make much noise to distract Nightmare, or grab any attention. Dream started shivering, but he wasn't cold. What was going on? He tried to push it aside, and kept watching, but it wouldn't go away. He felt uneasy, his eyes becoming droopy. His coughs became louder, rougher on his throat(?). He started coughing up black, inky goop. Nightmare jerked his head behind and looked at Dream. He got up quickly and ran over to Dream.

"Dream? Dream, can you hear me?" Nightmare forewarned. He started panicking, leaning Dream onto the ground, laying his head in his lap. When dream stopped coughing up goop, Nightmare checked on Dream once more.

"Can you hear me, Dream?"

"I... y-yeah.." Dream managed to cough up between coughs. NM put his hand on the side of Dream's sweating skull. He opened a portal and teleported through it to their home. He lay Dream down on the cough, and Nightmare sat next to him.

"Did all of my negative energy... do that to you..." Nightmare frowned. Dream nodded his head ever so slightly, trying not to use too much of the energy he had left.

"S-Sorry..." Dream started. "I... was trying to let you vent.."

"Your sorry? I over-reacted. It's my fault, Dream." Nightmare started.

Dream smiled, and did his best to sit up. When he finally did, he leaned against Nightmare.

"Heh, my little brother never changed." Nightmare giggled.

"But you did." Dream stated. "And I'm so proud of you for that. You really have changed."

Nightmare winced, processing what he had just heard. He smiled warmly at Dream.

Dream yawned, laying down in Nightmare's lap. As Dream drifted into his most peaceful state, Nightmare laid his hand on Dreams skull.

"Heh. I remember when I could carry you with just one arm." Nightmare joked. His eyes became misty as he started softly petting Dream's skull. Remembering the good times, Nightmare easily got emotional at those. He tried to hold back his tears though, but sadly, one slipped through his efforts, landing on Dreams skull. Dream cracked his eyes open and looked up at Nightmare, who, still holding back tears, letting a few seep through, was smiling at him.

"Brother?" Dream yawned. "Are.... Are you ok?" Dream, still half asleep, used his thumb to wipe off the access tears. "Please don't cry, brother. I'm here. And I always will be."

Nightmare chuckled, releasing a small gasp of relief that his tears stopped trying to force themselves out.

Yet... that was the biggest lie Dream had ever told.
