Chapter 64

The view of the war was horrific yet engrossing. Although the demons outnumbered the immortals by the ratio of ten to one, the demons were losing by a large margin. The high gods alone were debilitating for the demon army. Each high god was fighting five or six stronger demons at once, and destroying the smaller ones.

At the same time, it seemed like feng jiu was just playing around with the demons. With the sword in one hand, she was fighting three to four demons and with her other hand, she was weaving intricate magical traps around the demon army. Her spells alone were destroying huge chunks of the demonic forces. There was also the fact that while her hands were busy with sword fighting and spells, each of her nine tails was an opponent on their own. Her long majestic red-tails were slithering around clueless demons and snapping off their necks or squeezing the life out of them. her nine tails alone were killing off tens of demons at any given moment.

At one point, each of her nine tails had wrapped themselves around one demon each, and with their necks in a wise grip, she was squeezing the life out of them. it was at this moment, she saw her grandfather, bai zhi fighting off six demons at once. Killing off the demons she was fighting at the time with one stroke of her Kunlun sword, she ran towards her grandfather, excited to see him.

She threw out fireballs at the six demons bai zhi was fighting at that time, effectively setting them ablaze before calling out to him, "grandfather, I'm so happy to see you." she ran directly into him and gave him a big hug.

Bai zhi guffawed at her enthusiasm and the fact that when she had come running, the demons trapped in her tails were dragged on the ground behind her. Laughing hard at the scene, he patted her on the back and said, "good work with the tails, kiddo. I will remember that for the next time."

Confused, feng jiu looked behind her in search of what he was referring to and found the now dead demons still trapped in her tails. She released their bodies and with a sheepish look on her face said, "sorry, I was so excited to see you that I forgot all about them."

"it's okay, xaio jiu. How could I miss out on so much fun, huh? It feels like I am back in my youth when I used to fight beside dong hua and my brothers. Just this time it's you instead of dong hua beside me working just as beautifully and my sons instead of my brothers fighting just as bravely. I am proud of you, xaio jiu, so proud." Bai zhi said as his eyes filled up.

Giving a shy but happy smile, feng jiu replied, "that means a lot to me, grandfather. Now, stop that leaking of your eyes. If anyone were to find the great fox emperor crying, it would ruin your credibility as a bullhead, now wouldn't it?"

Bai zhi cackled again at her statement and started to walk off, calling out in his wake, "go fight, xaio jiu. Show these demons your smartness, not me."

Feng jiu chuckled as she blew away a group of five demons trying to attack her from the side. Picking out four demons from around her, she started her tricks again. while her tails began their own assault, she started setting fires to demons around her. She watched and laughed as by the time they realized they were on fire, the demons started jumping around. While she was playing with them, the sword went around spinning and cutting off demon heads all over the battlefield. At this moment, bai zhen stumbled beside her, fighting off five demons of his own. Seeing her laughing, he called out, "stop playing, xaio jiu. This is not the time for your games."

Feng jiu pouted at being reprimanded and as she was about to reply she was interrupted by a voice coming from above.

"stop bothering my little fox, bai zhen. Let her play and have fun. "

Both the referred parties looked up at the source of that sound and saw dong hua floating down from the sky. Against the backdrop of the shining moon, the light bounced off of dong hua's silver hair making it look like a glowing layer of light. The image of dong hua descending was spellbinding.

Landing beside feng jiu, he looped his arm around her waist and pulled her closer. With an arched eyebrow, he said, "you are never going to stop running about, are you?"

"never in a million years." She looked deep into his eyes whispering, "Welcome home, husband."

Dong hua pressed a soft kiss to her forehead and whispered against her skin, "it feels good to be back, little love."

Coughing out loudly, bai zhen exclaimed, "there is still a war going out here, you two? We have a lot of demons to kill. So, will you please pay attention?"

Dong hua swiped his hand through the air behind feng jiu's back. following this cang he appeared in the sky in an enlarged form. the sword multiplied into many as lightning started to crackle from the sky and gathered at its' multiple tips. Roaring with lightning, the multitudes of canghe shot out blazes of electricity on demons all over the battlefield and after the lightning had made a significant dent in the demonic forces, the multiple cang he's flew into the field slicing off demon heads everywhere. By the time, the original cang he came back to rest in dong hua's hands, the number of demons had decreased by thousands.

Turning towards bai zhen, dong hua referred to the havoc he had just caused and said, "oh, these demons you mean?"

Bai zhen shook his head and before leaving, he huffed out, "I am your uncle by marriage, you know."

Dong hua watched bai zhen's retreating back and said to feng jiu, "it looks like zhe yan is finally rubbing off on your uncle. Maybe, the old phoenix will stop grumbling about him now."

Feng jiu hid her face in dong hua's chest and giggled at the truth of his comment. A few moments later, she pulled back her face and asked, "where is mo yuan and lian song?"

Without breaking their eye contact, both of them spread out a hand in opposite directions and blew away the approaching demons. At the same time, dong hua replied, "you will find mo yuan wherever there is systematic destruction going on in the field. as for lian song, I have sent him to look for the source of this demonic army. Something about these demons is off. They are stronger than the current generations of demons and much brasher. An attack on such a large scale is not a small deal, xaio bai."

As a larger group of demons attacked from both sides, dong hua and feng jiu stepped apart with their swords at the ready. Dong hua rose up in the air taking a handful of demons with him while feng jiu tackled the rest of the group. Slicing off their heads, and setting the rest ablaze, feng jiu replied, "I agree, dijun. their spirits are off-balance as if they weren't supposed to be here. Even their bodies are catching fire too easily like they were born from it. no demon should catch to a normal fire so quickly, it goes against the natural laws of their kind."

They both continued to destroy the demon army as they now worked in a newfound rhythm. While floating in the air, dong hua shot off spells and bolts on demons all across the battlefield, cang he continued slicing off demon heads randomly. At the same time, standing just under him, feng jiu's sword, spells and her nine tails wreaked havoc on the demons nearby. The two of them alone were killing off demons by hundreds in a minute. The view was so enthralling that many immortals would randomly break off from the fight and would just stand there taking in the sight of these two almighty gods fighting.

Only a couple of hours had passed since the war had begun and dong hua had been there for a rough estimate of half an hour. In such a short period of time, the demon army had been reduced to less than half of its original size. What had been an army of millions of demons, now stood at the count of a few hundred thousand demons. Moreover, the celestial army had taken losses close to none. So, the morale was running high at that time. But this was soon to come crashing down as lian song came running with a haggard look on his face.

Seeing the approaching figure of lian song, dong hua blasted off all the demons near feng jiu and landed beside her. Lian song came to stand in front of the two of them and before saying anything, he created a privacy shield around them. afterward, he explained, "these demons had emerged from the ancient demon burial ground. I don't know how it happened but the burial site is still spitting out demons by the thousands. When I went there to inspect how they had come about, another army of almost two hundred thousand strong was gathered there."

"but that shouldn't have been possible, mo yuan sealed off that burial site." Feng jiu mused out loud.

With a grave expression on his face, dong hua finally said, "it seems like I have made an enormous mistake in my calculations."

"what do you mean dijun?"

"When I was figuring out the puzzle of the power burst at your revival, xaio bai, I only included the seals containing the living. I left out another important piece of that puzzle, the seals containing the dead remains of the living. They too must have been affected by your powers otherwise there is no way for them to be able to burst out of a seal that mo yuan had cast himself. But still we need to figure out what triggered the rebirth of so many demons both today and in the previous instance."

Since only mo yuan was present there the last time, dong hua immediately called out to him. It took a moment before he was added inside the privacy shield. While mo yuan explained what he had found there and how he had sealed off the site, feng jiu centered her spirit and started to look through the spiritual remains of the ancient demon burial ground. She could feel the living spirits of the demons, the ones who were alive, and the ones who were starting to stir under the ground. Forcing on, she went further inside, and on her way down to its very depths, she encountered some very strong ancient spirits. Finally, after a long careful perusal, she found what she was looking for, and what she had found was a hundred times worse than imagined. Bursting back into her body, she opened her eyes and took in strong deep breaths to regulate her breathing.

She squeezed dong hua's arm and said in an urgent voice, "dong hua, the situation is much worse."

When he focused his full attention on her, she continued, "there is a shred of hellfire burning deep inside that burial ground which is the source of the continuous revival of these demons. I think that the flame of hellfire got trapped inside when qing cang ignited the eastern desert bell after his death. They have been sourcing its powers and that's why their spirits have been so unstable, catching fire so easily. If what I am thinking is correct then they must have found a way to ignite the bell again, dong hua."
