Beginning

There was this boy I once knew. He was about five years younger than me. He used to live with my cousin, Chris, back in middle and high school. His name was Alexander, Alex for short. I was a sophomore in college studying marine biology while he was a senior in high school. I came home for winter break, and I went over to Chris's house, I have a key to his house, so I came on in without thinking. "Hello?" "Hey Winter." Alex was sitting on the couch with a baby in his arms. "Hey, Alex. Who's baby?" "Mine." I was stunned that I didn't realize Chris walked into the room and sat down beside him. "What's up, Winter?" "Oh um... sorry. I guess congratulations." "Thanks." "What's her name?" "Olivia." "Pretty." I looked at Chris and signaled him to follow me to the kitchen, we walked in the kitchen, and I nearly broke my neck. "He has a kid? When did this happen?" "Man, I don't even want to get into it, and I know he doesn't either. This is the second time he's been allowed to see her." "What you mean allowed? Isn't that his kid?" "It is, but it's complicated, and the babymama is giving him hell." "Who is she?" "Pumpkin." "Pumpkin, who? Because I know it's not Pumpkin Williams." He chuckled as he nodded, "Listen he kept all that a secret until he told me she was pregnant and the baby was his." "Is the baby his, though?" "Winter let it go, man. He dropped out of school, and his life is just..." I stormed back into the living room, but before I could speak, the doorbell interrupted me. I answered it to Pumpkin, "Oh? Hey, Winter." "Nope." I pushed her out the door and away from the door. "What the hell were you thinking!? Messing with him!? He's a kid!" "He's an adult." "Just because he's eighteen don't mean a damn thing, Pumpkin! That baby looks like she's about six months, so that means you've been messing with him while he was a minor!" "This isn't your business!" "You're right, but he's been around me and my family, so I'm looking out for him. And I know you, unfortunately." "Mind your business, Winter." She pushed past me, then went inside, seconds later, I heard yelling. I rushed inside to see Pumpkin with the baby in her arms while she's in Alex's face. "Alright, Pumpkin, he'll do it, so get out his face." Chris moved her away from Alex, and then she walked out. Alex went upstairs, and I heard the door slam. I looked at Chris, confused. He sighs as he sits down on the couch, "He got the babymama from hell. She's taking him to court next month." "For what?!" "I'm not telling his business." I went upstairs and went into Alex's room where he was smoking those disgusting cigarettes. "Want to tell me what's going on?" "It's not your business." "I keep getting told that. I know I haven't been here, but come on, I would like to think we were close before I went to college."
