Chapter 68: Paid In Full

Dong Hua slowly climbed the stairs and arrived at the site. The Rock of Three Incarnations proudly stood tall as to challenge him to look for Feng Jiu's name again. He contemplated the rock for a while before deciding to act. With a wave of his hand Dong Hua summoned her name and to his surprise it read: Bai Feng Jiu & Dong Hua Dijun.

His eyes widen. "How can this be possible?" He loudly thought. Someone behind him called him out.

"Dong Hua Dijun..."

He slowly turned around "You?"

"We meet again Dijun." Golden Immortal Da Lou surprised him.

"What are you doing here?"

"I'm here to show you why your name appeared on The Rock of Incarnations."

"This can't be real."

"Oh, but it is."

"How?"

"To answer your question, let me show you instead." A portal was opened in front of them with past scenes of Feng Jiu's judgement trial.

"She acted against our protocol when she decided to marry Dong Hua Dijun!!! She needs to face the consequences for her actions. Look at all the havoc this marriage has caused. A simple defiant act rippled chaos and destruction to innocent lives. Are we going to turn a blind eye and ignore the facts now?" Fate objected.

"Why are you so eager to punish her? Do you hate her that much?" Justice asked Fate.

"I don't hate her, is just her perseverance and defiance that I find unacceptable." Fate responded.

"Golden Immortal Da Lou, welcome, please come in." High Supreme Deity told her.

"As you all are aware I usually don't meddle on others affairs unless a grave injustice has been committed. I've followed Xiao Feng Huang steps closely and I believe that my words will help you guide your decision." Golden Immortal Da Lou said.

"Please enlighten us as to what 'grave injustice' against Feng Jiu you are referring to." High Supreme Deity proceeded.

"As ancient immortals were are bound to take ownership of our actions, otherwise we will feel detached from them and never be fully invested. Perseverance, active optimism, decisiveness, all require the sense that your actions emanate from oneself and no one else. It is natural to displace responsibility, especially when things get tough. In these cases, we should stave off our inclinations and opt for self-reflection. Failure and adversity are fertile conditions for self-reflection. This is impossible if you do not feel personally responsible for your own actions. You won't be prompted to self-reflect and grow. It takes great courage, but it should be done, especially when acting presumptuously as an executioner in the name of so-called justice."

"Are you implying that one of us took matters in their own hands?" High Supreme Deity asked Da Lou.

"Precisely. Success is contingent upon personal attributes, but it is also contingent upon others. Without the trust of others, we are less likely to build the interpersonal support vital to success. Trust is engendered by honesty, integrity, fidelity, and ethical behavior. These are parts that make up one's moral compass. The moral compass tends to remove risk from business and personal relationships and confer predictability, which grants safety and fosters trustworthiness. If the situation is right, the trust and support of others can be crucial to success because life will present opportunities that are not able to tackled alone. This is especially true because so many outcomes and opportunities are dependent on the decisions of others, who, most of the time, have no stake in our achievements. The amazing thing about having a clear moral compass is that it aids decision-making and concurrently gains greater degrees of responsibility and confidence from the people around you. These two factors perpetuate further success. Success begets success. When I speak of persistence, therefore, I see it as not only a state of mind but a mental, emotional, and moral attitude in the face of a challenge. This is key because we sometimes need to remind ourselves of our motivations. The closer they align with our values, the easier it will be to draw courage from them. Steady persistence and relentless tenacity can look much like defiance. It is the conviction to say, "I will not give in," when opposed by people or circumstances. There is a caveat, however. Persistence and tenacity can verge on rashness and stubbornness. We must sometimes desist from our chosen ill course, despite sunken costs or effort."

"Who has chosen to do this?" The High Supreme Deity asked again.

"Someone with ill intentions that saw Feng Jiu more as a liability than an asset and took our resources dedicated to one goal and allocated them for another course. This immortal failed to recognize that success can take the form of holding back or stopping could result in self-defeat. By rejecting to hold back it forced a great injustice on an unborn child, trying to putting it to death with malicious intentions."

"Who committed such a grave thing?" Justice asked Golden Immortal Da Lou.

"The one who continues to spread doubts about Feng Jiu's character and motives in your respected minds today. This individual took the authority that it was not given to pass a sentence that it was not lawful to give. Calling herself the Hand of Heaven." Da Lou responded.

"It was you, wasn't it?" Destiny scolded Fate.

"Yes, it was me. All debts need to be paid and Dong Hua Dijun incurred on a greater one and payment has not been submitted. This matter still needs to be addressed."

"To be called the Hand of Heaven without being commissioned to do so is a grave sin. Acting against an innocent life especially when is an unborn child is a greater sin. This is surely an extreme injustice." Justice interjected.

"It might be considered an extreme injustice, but we cannot forget that Dong Hua Dijun broke an oath and by our law he needs to pay with his life. Bai Feng Jiu granted him the true essence of immortality making him untouchable. So that is why I acted against his progeny." Fate defended herself.

"Without our consent!!!" High Supreme Deity shouted in disgust.

"According with our law when an oath is broken, the punishment for the offender is a required restitution. Since Dong Hua Dijun removed his love life from the Rock of Three Incarnations his fated wife which was originally Bai Feng Jiu, was allotted to another husband. In this case Lord Weng Chan, who valiantly sacrificed himself dying in her place, which is the restitution of Dong Hua Dijun's debt full payment. Lord Weng Chan sacrifice granted him great merit in the eyes of this Council, paying a debt on behalf of another. For that I will request that you allow him to speak on his behalf." Golden Immortal Da Lou spoke.

"Call him in." Lord Weng Chan entered the high court and reverently greeted everyone present.

"Lord Weng Chan, according with our codes of morality, you have earned the great merit to go back and live a good and long prosperous life with your fated wife Bai Feng Jiu. We willfully fulfill your wish if this is what you desire." The High Supreme Deity addressed Weng Chan.

"Thank you, your Honor, it is a great privilege for me to hear your kind words. However, I lived a prosperous life and although my fated wife never loved me as I wanted to; my wish is to see her happy with her beloved. To be able to see her get her true happiness is enough for me. His Lordship Dong Hua Dijun has also earned the right to be happy with her for all of his deeds to preserve universal peace. He paid the ultimate sacrifice. He has lived an extensively long life without being able to experience love. I won't wish that upon anyone. That in my opinion weight more than his broken oath. I never wanted her to love me forcefully. Because love should be given freely, selflessly and not imposed. If you see fit to grant me a wish, my only request will be to accompany her, but not as her fated husband, but as her companion. To be next to her for a lifetime and see her finally happy is my only request. I have nothing more to add your Honor." Weng Chan finished addressing the court.

"Lord Weng Chan what an honorable request. May I ask you; how well did you get to know Bai Feng Jiu?" Justice asked him.

"I came to know her late in our lives, but what others thought of her was enough for me to see the exceptional young woman that she really is. From her family and friends, her life achievements, her kind acts towards others, proves that she deserves all the happiness in the universe. She is really one of a kind." Weng Chan smiled upon saying these words.

"And you are willing to give her away just like that?" Love asked Weng Chan this time.

"The greatest act of love is to give away your life on behalf of those that you love. I'm willing to see her happy even if is not with me. She has greatly suffered to attain her happiness. I want to gift her that. I have no regrets."

"Thank you, Lord Weng Chan, for your transparency. You may take your leave; we will reach a decision on your request." High Supreme Deity said.

"Thank you, your Honor." Weng Chan left the courtroom.

Golden Immortal Da Lou closed the portal. "This is what I want you to see Dong Hua Dijun. This is the reason your name reappeared on The Rock of Incarnations. Your debt has been paid in full on behalf of another. You still don't believe that it is real?"

Dong Hua incredibly was staring at the rock. He harshly expressed: "I didn't begged for his charity."

"Charity? Oh please Dijun, don't be so lofty. As incredible as it is for you to process; the fact that an insignificant immortal in your eyesight was willing to pay your debt, that is the reality that I want you to understand Dong Hua Dijun. Weng Chan understood Feng Jiu's feelings for you and he willingly sacrificed the chance to obtain his happiness with her to grant you yours. Love is a pure feeling that you give unselfishly to another living being. It comes with a total feeling of comfort, knowing that you haven't caused pain or suffering to anyone. Instead, you've helped bring them joy. To feel compassion for the other person. This compassion is what would lead all living beings to receive respect. Love if the raw force that inconspicuously connects us to the ones we love with continuous positive energy, so that even tangible separations between people who love each other do not reduce the intangible power of love, the greatest power known in the universe."

"So, the white lion is him?" Dong Hua inquired.

"Yes. The Heavens granted Lord Weng Chan's request to serve as Xiao Feng Huang companion for a lifetime. Is a humble approval compared to what he gave away. He forfeited his chance to be romantically involved with her. It was the only way to legally maneuver around the heavenly decree against you Dijun."

"You mean he had a chance to be with my Jiu'er?" Dong Hua annoyingly asked.

"Of course, he did. She was legitimately assigned to be his wife after you practically handed her over to him. But when Xiao Feng Huang saw that her name on the rock was tied up to Weng Chan she stubbornly fought fate just to be with you, her original fated husband. She was born for you Dijun, but you blindly pushed her away when you erased your name from the rock not thinking about the consequences she encountered. If it wasn't for Xiao Feng Huang perseverance to win your heart and Weng Chan high moral values to let her be happy, you would have lost her forever. Fate arranged their mortal trial as a way to give Weng Chan the opportunity to win her affections. However, her love for you Dijun is so pure, true and strong, that it was the bursting force that destroyed Fate ploys to separate you two. Don't be blinded by jealousy and fail to see the goodness of his intentions."

Dong Hua simply shrugged at her words. "Am I being schooled now?"

"The almighty Dong Hua Dijun ruler of the universe, who has attained oneness enlightment, has indeed forgotten some important lessons. So yes, I'm helping you remember what you forgotten. As you may know, jealousy has many faces: competitiveness, envy, resentment, insecurity and fear of exclusion. Leaning into the experience of jealousy and not trying to cover it up is the key to transforming it and creating compassion and connection. If you're not mindful, it becomes a swirling vicious circle. Jealousy is considered one of the "five poisons" together with anger, desire, pride and ignorance. They are considered poisonous because they create pain and suffering, both for ourselves and others. Have you overlooked the basic principles about mudita (sympathetic joy) now?

Let me refresh your memory then. The pleasure that comes from delighting in other people's well-being, is the cultivation of sympathetic joy is indeed a pleasure – It frees us from the suffering of our painful emotions. In addition, rejoicing in others' happiness actually creates happiness and satisfaction in ourselves. When we practice appreciation for others' happiness and success, we come to appreciate ourselves. Consequently, our jealousy can dissolve. Our sense of connection and basic aliveness is restored. You need to overcome your ego-clinging and sorrow, and start living a life of satisfaction and joy that was gifted to you.

Envy and jealousy are considered to be rooted in the belief in an autonomous and permanent self or soul. This is permanent and the separate self is an illusion. The universe is related through the fiction of the self as we become very protective and greedy about our belongings and also for getting more than what is required. Nonattachment is exactly the opposite of separation. You need two things to have attachment: the thing you're attaching to, and the person who's attaching. In nonattachment, on the other hand, there's unity. There's unity because there's nothing to attach to. If you have unified with the whole universe, there's nothing outside of you, so the notion of attachment becomes absurd. Who will attach to what? For all evil things, and all evil destiny, are rooted in greed, hate, and ignorance; and of these three things, ignorance or delusion (moha, avijja) is the chief root and the primary cause of all evil and misery in the universe. If there is no more ignorance, there will be no more greed and hatred, no more rebirth, no more suffering.

Being jealous of your wife and Weng Chang at this point is useless. Both of them have proofed that fate can be re-written if the intentions are pure and based out of love. When your return, may your mindfulness and awareness be clearer than your desire to argue about a friendship that is based in the same principles that you overlooked. If you pursue this path, it will hinder your relationship with Xiao Feng Huang not to mention with your son. It will also affect the universal peace balance. But then again is your choice. I'm only here as a guide and nothing else. Choose wisely Dong Hua Dijun." Golden Immortal Da Lou disappeared.

Dong Hua jolted back to reality. He opened his eyes and to his surprise; he was in his bed chamber at Tai Chen Palace. He smiled understanding the message. "Thank you, Golden Immortal, Da Lou for enlighten this old rock, yet again."

Feng Jiu didn't have a good night sleep; she was sad and gloomy. Her chest pains were now milder than yesterday. She went for an early morning walk to clear her mind from clutter thoughts that were clogging her mood. "Little one, let's go for a walk this morning, maybe our day will brighten up ahead" Feng Jiu padded her baby bump.

She honed to her fox senses to better enjoy nature. Early in morning the artistic golden sun got up like a baby and started painting the dark black sky into a bright blue sky. The bright looking milky clouds got up from sleep and started travelling around the sky visiting the wonderful environment. The mountains standing alone stood covering the entire nature. Next to the mountains and near to the forest there was a waterfall with ivory white water splashing down to the river as if someone spilled a glass of milk. Fresh windy cool and crispy air started whistling like an invisible ghost. The red and green colored birds started twitting their morning melody. The enormous garden stood like a royal palace and the thick dried strong brown big branches danced welcoming the morning. The green brown beautiful countless leaves whispered to each other about their morning plans. The big buzzing bumble bees swarmed up in the air in glad searching for sweet honey. The huge trees swung in the wind greeting good morning. The small colorful cute butterflies danced all around the environment looking for sweet nectar. The flower's fragrance filled the whole environment making the morning pleasant. Feng Jiu felt more relaxed. Nature itself was her best remedy for healing.

The white lion was patiently accompaning her. They silently walked together until Feng Jiu decided to sit on her favorite tree to enjoy her surroundings. The white lion sat next to her to keep her company. He felt her despair. Feng Jiu absently began to pet his fur.

"It seems that no matter what I do, is never enough. I'm tired of keep trying. I am struggling to understand how I might contribute to reversing this descent into fear and sorrow, what I might do to help restore hope to Qing Qui's future. In the past it was easier to believe in my own effectiveness: if I worked hard with others and came up with good ideas, we could make a difference. But now I doubt that. Yet without hope that my labor will produce results, how can I keep going? If I have no belief that my vision can become real, where will I find the strength to persevere?" Feng Jiu kept gazing Qing Qui's majestic scenery.

"When the forms of old values are dying, new ones are created by those who are not afraid to be insecure." The white lion replied to her.

"Could insecurity self-doubt be a good trait? I've always struggled with these." Feng Jiu asked him.

"They could be an intrinsic personality trait, or an attitude driven by circumstances. Get familiar with hope, since is a dimension of the soul, an orientation of the spirit, an orientation of the heart. It transcends the world that is immediately experienced and is anchored somewhere beyond its horizon. It is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense regardless of how it turns out. hopelessness is not the opposite of hope. Fear is. Hope and fear are inescapable partners. Anytime we hope for a certain outcome, and work hard to make it a happen, then we also introduce fear—fear of failing, fear of loss. Hopelessness is free of fear and thus can feel quite liberating. Unburdened of strong emotions, they describe the miraculous appearance of clarity and energy. You may have to face the fact that your work will be apparently worthless and even achieve no result at all, if not perhaps results opposite to what you expect. As you get used to this idea, you start more and more to concentrate not on the results, but on the value, the rightness, the truth of the work itself. You gradually struggle less and less for an idea and more and more for specific people. In the end, it is the reality of personal relationship with yourself that saves everything as you will notice that your doubts and fear will gradually dissipate." The white lion explained.

"I think I understand what you are saying. In my grief I saw myself being held, in an incredible web of loving-kindness. Grief and love in the same place. I felt as if my heart would burst with holding it all. Being consoled and strengthened by being hopeless with my subjects, family and loved ones. We don't need specific outcomes, just the support one another." Feng Jiu said.

"Precisely. My mother used to tell me when I felt discouraged: I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope for hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love, for love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith. But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting. While you wait to embark your journey through time of increasing uncertainty, do it groundless, hopeless, insecure, patient, and with a clear mind. Everything will come into place as every place serves its purpose." The white lion replied.

"So you think I should wait?" Feng Jiu asked him.

"Whatever motives you have to feel this way now, would be cleared up and the answers will come when you least expect them. Not everything that is thought is said and not everything that you physically see represents an absolute reality." The white lion told her.

"I know. Perhaps I failed to see different angles." Feng Jiu answered.

"Perhaps me too." Dong Hua commented. Surprising them both. They didn't notice his presence around.

"Dijun?" Feng Jiu quickly got up and ran to his embrace burrying her face on his chest. She inhaled his sandalwood scent soothing her worries.

"Jiu'er, you should be resting. It's too early to be out. Why don't you go inside and wait for me? I'll be quick." Dong Hua tenderly kissed her forehead.

"Okay. Thank you, my friend, for the uplifting chat" She bid her goodbye to her furry companion. He gave her a low growl as a reply. The white lion was about to leave when Dong Hua stopped him. "Stay. I want a word with you."

The white lion turned around and faced Dong Hua. They were having a gaping standoff. Establishing their dominance. "I thought you say that you wanted to talk to me. Are you now admiring my majestic features?" He told Dong Hua.

Dong Hua smirked at his snide comment. "So you can speak?"

"Among other things too." The white lion replied.

"All right. Let's have a chat."

"Splendid."

"For a big cat you are well articulated."

"And that amuses the almighty Dong Hua Dijun?"

Dong Hua sarcastically smiled at him. "Your demeanor reminds me of someone familiar."

"And?"

"I like the fact that you are not afraid to express yourself, regardless of who I am. Others tend to be snobs to win my attention when in reality they fear me." Dong Hua replied.

"I'm glad that you find me amusing. Am at ease to know that we can meet eye to eye and hold a civilized conversation without using threatening tactics."

"Hmm, let's then. All right, I recently came into knowledge of your identity and chivalrous acts. My question for you is: What made you did it?" Dong Hua asked him.

"I realized that my chance to be happy was not attainable. I simply respected her election and feelings for you. My intention was never to impose myself nor to force her to love me. Love is always freely given. It cannot be demanded. We can request things of each other, but we must never demand anything. Requests give direction to love, but demands stop its flow. For many, it's the reminder of what's important in life—not what we do, what we earn, or what we obtain, but how we treat each other, how we help each other, and how we use our gifts to make the universe a better place. A person trapped in a motionless feeling is like a wild bird put in a cage. Its natural response will be to take flight at the first opportunity, to find its freedom again. So I accepted what is, let go of what was, and have faith that she will be finally be happy even if is not with me. It's hard not to have our hands in everything, but when we let go and accept what is going on and changing, life becomes much more bearable even in this form."

"Everyone in life need the space to grow, is indeed the greatest proof of compassion you can give to yourself and others. How striking and brave that you acted with such grace, in the name of freedom. Such a rare degree of comprehension." Dong Hua said.

"Confidence is freedom. With calling on courage to be open and vulnerable it creates stronger connections with others around us since we are doing it authentically. And can understand that is where others are coming from also, and that we all have ours struggles, strengths, and so forth. So I enjoyed the idea of trusting others enough to be on their journey and trusting myself enough to be feel free. Knowing that you have paid the ultimate sacrifice for so long, it was not hard for me to yield my position. I never saw you as a rival. I have always admired your courage."

"Hmm in that case, why did you decided to be her companion now? Do you love her?" Dong Hua firmly asked him.

"I guess I never had the chance to truly know her up close; so, it was my unfulfilled wish of some sort. She is an extraordinary woman, what is not to love about her? She is easy as the air we breathe, everything about her radiates love, kindness and gentleness."

"Avoiding your answer? I will not hold your sincerity against you." Dong Hua sarcastically said.

"I will like to keep this form intact for a bit longer." The white lion answered.

Dong Hua smirked. "Very perceptive"

"I know that you are her beloved. She is true and loyal to you. I'm not here to take her away from you, if that is what you're trying to find out. But you must know that we share a distinct connection, even if is not a romantic one. She is still struggling with her past. I can help her redirect her drive so she doesn't end up choosing a dark path. I've sensed it in her already. My guess is that you know it too. Healing is a long process. As healing begins, it goes in several stages. Each happen at varying rates and depths unique to her situation. No right or wrong, but a healing pattern unique as a fingerprint. I say healing, because this is not about cure, but about creating wholeness not health; creating meaning so that the wounds no longer pain her, but become part of her living narrative enriching herself and those around her. That is my intention. I want to see her be free of that cage she still in. She needs to learn how to fly."

Dong Hua understood what he was talking about as he himself has seen her trapped in her mind and dreams. "You're a healer?"

"My empathic side is well developed more than others, so yes. By having a deeper emotional understanding of feelings, sentiments and reactions, I drive my intuition, and pick up on things others miss or make connection that aren't clear to anyone else. Empathic are sensitive listeners helping others feel comforted by offering support and reach out whenever someone experience difficulty. We have a deeper understanding of how pain fuel certain behaviors and we offer support in different ways. I can help her seek to understand its mechanics, the importance can be derived even from her darkest hour. This isn't to diminish or ignore her pain experienced by those close to her. On the contrary, it's to honor her struggles and celebrate the power that is retrieved. Remembering to face what is, is an act of bravery. We know how brave she is already but her path still has some hidden obstacles that she needs to face so she can achieve oneness."

"All right. I will allow you to help her attain this since you are offering to aid her, but under one condition."

"Which is?"

"You might discover certain pieces during your therapeutic sessions with her that will be shocking to you. Do not reveal them to anyone. I know your past relationship with the Bais and have kept it to myself. Your uncle is now the regent in your place. He is helping to reestablish order and peace. I will help you with your return if you wish to take over of what you left behind. But you must never approach her again." Dong Hua said.

"That is understandable."

"Do we have an agreement then?"

"We do."

Dong Hua came closer to him and said: "Before I go... I want to say... Thank you for giving us the chance to be together. I will never forget your sacrifice."

"Love her and treasure her forever, she deserves it."

Dong Hua slightly bowed his head in agreement with him. He turned around to reunite with his beloved little fox.
