001 | the vanishing of will byers

Sunday, November 6th, 1983.

JONATHAN BYERS WAS SITTING ONΒ  the couch his best friends house, both of them scoffing on pizza.

"So, you're brother at the Wheelers?" Jonathan asked as he turned up the radio, Islands in The Stream blasting on the radio. Bea nodded her head, taking another bite of the pizza.

"10 hour campaign so far," Bea said as she swallowed the last piece of pizza. She fiddled with the hem of her red shirt as she looked outside.

Jonathan looked down at his watch and swore under his breath.

"I have a quick shift," he said, throwing his stuff in his backpack before running out the door. "See ya later Bea," he said before driving off.

BEA SAT ALONE IN THE HOUSE WITHΒ  Mews on her lap as she looked at the time. It was 8 o'clock at night and their mum was once again fast asleep. She heard the door slam behind her and Dustin walked into the living room.

"What's got you in a mood?" She asked as Mew jumped off her lap and moved towards Dustin, circling his feet. Dustin sighed, collapsing onto the sofa next to his sister.

"Lost a bet with Will, I have to give him my X-Men 134," he explained and Bea chuckled.

"You can't have my copy though," she said, knowing exactly how his brain worked. Dustin rolled his eyes before they both broke into laughter and looked at one another for a second,

"How was the campaign, sucks you guys didn't invite me," Bea asked and Dustin shrugged his shoulders.

"Well we lost in the end, Will rolled a seven and the Demogorgan probably got us." He explained before smirking at his sister. "Maybe you could have come if you weren't hanging out with your boyfriend Jonathan," he said making kissy noises.

Bea scoffed before pushing Dustin back onto the other side of the couch.

"Gross," she said before picking up her lightsaber from under the couch.

"I find your lack of faith disturbing Master Henderson," Dustin said as he jumped behind the table, grabbing his make shift lightsaber.

"Strike me down Darth Henderson, but I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine," Bea said before they started battling with their lightsabers.

Just as the fun started, their mum walked in with Mews in her hand before she looked at the two.

"Its a school night! You better hurry up and get off to bed before you hurt Mews," she said before trecking back to their bedroom.

The two siblings let out of a sigh of defeat as they walked towards their adjacent rooms.

"This is not the end Darth," Bea said as she walked into her room, placing the lightsaber on the messy desk in the corner of her small room.

BEA WALKED INTO SCHOOL THE NEXT day and saw Nancy and Barb standing at the lockers, the former was holding some kind of letter in her hands and Bea peered over her shoulder to see it.

"You making out with the king now it seems Nance," Bea suggested and the two turned to her.

Bea was close with Barb as they grew up near each other before Dustin was born and they moved but she wasn't too close with Nancy, Bea thought she was pretty stuck up at some time.

Nancy stood with a large smile on her face and Bea watched Steve walk inside as the bell rang, Nancy following him in.

"So whats going on between them?" Bea asked as she walked to class with Barb.

"Well they are probably sleeping together but other than that," Barb suggested and Bea just laughed.

"My childhood best friend, sleeping with all the ladies," Bea said as she mentioned Steve. They were really close growing up, practically inseperable. Or at least until he became popular and friends with Carol.

Then they drifted apart, she was angry at first but she knew she always had Jonathan.

Almost on cue she saw the oldest Byers child and said goodbye to Barb, rushing over to a panicked looking Jonathan just as the bell rang.

"Hey, Jonathan, whats up?" Bea asked as she saw his eyes dart in a panicked manner around the room.

"Hes gone," Jonathan said in an ominous tone and they both stopped.

She scoffed, confused. "Who?" Bea asked and Jonathan sighed.

"Will. He didn't get home last night," Jonathan said and Bea looked at the floor, a sad expression on her face.

"So he didn't get in last night?" She asked and Jonathan shrugged his shoulders.

"I don't know where he is," Jonathan said and Bea placed a hand on his shoulder, stopping outside the class.

"Lets ditch, we can go home, look for Will," she said and he sighed, nodding his head.

THE TWO MADE IT BACK TO THE house and saw Joyce sitting there annoyed on the sofa. She stood up and flashed a half-hearted smile at the two before walking towards them slowly.

"I'm sorry," Bea blurted out as she finally comprehended what had happened to Will. She felt like crying, the little boy she had known since he was a toddler had gone missing. Joyce smiled at her, this time it was real and it made Bea smile aswell.

She didn't have the best mum, or at least not one that had any emotions since her divorce so Joyce was the closest thing she had.

"Will!" She yelled out as they stood just outside Castle Byers, a small hut that Jonathan and Will had made out of wood when they were kids. Joyce came out of the hut panicked as the two teenagers called Will's name out in a desperate attempt to find him.

Bea wandered slightly away from the group as she screamed Will's name at the top of her lungs, he was a good kid, he wouldn't have ran away.

Joyce held the phone against her ears, praying that Lonnie would answer the phone and an angry expression fell over her face when he didn't.

"Cynthia, this is Joyce," she said into the phone as another woman was there. Jonathan and Bea watched from the couch as they made missing posters for Will.

The line disconnected and Joyce slammed the phone into the wall, swearing at it.

"We have to stay calm," Jonathan said as his mum stood with an angry expression on her face.

"I'm gonna go make some coffee," Bea said before walking to the kitchen, trying not to intrude on their talk.

She walked back in with three cups of coffee to see everyone was gone. Bea saw the door was open and she followed the open door to see Jim Hopper, the head of police, standing outside with two other police officers and Wills bike.

She sighed, walking behind Jonathan.

Hopper brought Wills bike back that they found in the woods and Joyce was asking so many questions it was getting upsetting to watch. She was chatting away with the police and Bea had zoned out, thinking about the possibilities of Will being kidnapped by someone, or something.

SHE SAT IN THE HENDERSON HOUSEΒ  music playing faintly on the radio as she cooked the dinner. Their mum was asleep on the sofa and Dustin was making missing posters for Will.

"Dustin, dinners ready," Bea called out as she placed the home made pizza on the table, she was never the best cook but in times like that she needed to be. He sat down, taking his cap off and placing it on the slightly ripped chair next to them.

He picked at his food and Bea looked at him confused as she took another bite of the food.

"Is it really that bad?" She asked and Dustin looked up, an upset look on his face as he looked at his sister.

"The boys want to go look for Will," he said and she took in a sharp intake of breath.

"Okay," she said and he turned his head, looking at her confused.

"If Jonathan went missing I'd do the same thing, eat up, call the boys but be safe," she said and Dustin smiled, taking a large piece of pizza before they sat in silence, listening to the music on the radio.

Bea was washing up their plates - and all of the stuff she used to make the pizza in the first place - when she heard Dustin walk into the kitchen.

"You going now?" She asked, not even turning around as she turned the tap off.

"Yeah, we should be quick," he said and Bea turned around to see his bike on one arm and he was holding his cap with the other. She laughed, walking towards her little brother.

Even though he was only four years younger than her, she still felt like she needed to protect him.

"You be safe for me," she said, kissing him reluctantly on the forhead. He pulled away, a grossed out look on his face.

"Eww, I'm fine, anyway I dont want to go but it's for Will," he said, wiping his forhead. Bea laughed and ruffled her little brothers hair before placing his signature cap on his head. Bea watched as he walked out the house, getting on his bike and cycling away.

Thunder rumbled and the rain fell as she waited, staring out of the window. He hadn't come home yet and she was starting to panic, as if he had become like Will. Bea wouldn't be able to live with herself if that happened.

She acted like his mum sometimes but it was only because she cared for him.

She loved their mum and Bea thought she was awesome for the way she raised them but sometimes, their actual mum was kind of useless. Bea sighed as she heard Islands in the Stream again, just like it had played the night Will went missing.
