CHAPTER 9- THE REUNION NIGHT

Mehran felt like an eternity had passed since last, he had seen her.

The woman he is staring at right now, was once his whole world, his most precious and priced possession. A woman he had loved with his heart and soul.

Umaira looked divine dressed in a blood red full sleeved backless V-neck, long evening gown. Her light brown hair opened and neatly placed on her shoulder. Blood red lipstick adorned her plump lips and dark black kohl enhanced her honey eyes. Slight blush on her cheeks. A small chain with a tiny heart pendant around her neck and diamond small studs in her ears.

Even after so many years have passed, Umaira felt her heart skip a beat when she saw Mehran. He is looking very dashing in maroon slim fit formal shirt, black waist coat and black trouser. His hair neatly combed and gelled, resting to his side, just like how she had always liked it. Umaira and Mehran continue to stare at each other.

'MEHRAN AHMAD ALI!' Umaira stormed towards Mehran, who stood at the foot of stairs leading up to the third floor where is the Commerce department of ST. Xavier College. Shadab looked frightened but Mehran had kept a straight face.

Umaira had fury in her eyes, her nostrils flaring. Mehran stood his ground. Umaira slapped him hard. Many students stood there gaping at what was happening. Many didn't believe that much in love couple, Mehran and Umaira are fighting- they had never fought.

Mehran looked at her, his palm resting on his right cheek, it felt warm there.

'How dare you...? How dare you ditch me...? Fool me.' Umaira said angrily.

'Umaira...'Mehran began softly. Umaira is right on her part to be angry, but he is sure that after she heard his side of the story she will forgive him and understand him.

'Shut up! I don't want to hear any more lies.' She said angrily. Mehran frowned

'Umaira you always do this. At least hear the other person out.' Mehran said frustrated.

Umaira rolled her eyes.

'Now, you are blaming me? Wow! I should have known better than to trust you.' Umaira said. Mehran is angry now, how can she blame him without hearing him out.

'Fine. I won't say anything. Do whatever you want.' Mehran challenged her. Umaira looked at him, she slipped out his ring and slammed it into his palm.

'Don't ever show me your face again, Ahmad Ali.' She said angrily.

'Fine! And you don't show your face to me either.' Mehran said equally angry.

Umaira turned around and left without any backward glance. Mehran too looked away.

The rest of their last semester they avoided each other completely. Even though, their hearts ached to be with each other, they stood their ground. Ego and guilt overpowered their love.

***************************

Mehran and Umaira looked away as painful part of their memories came back to haunt them. Umaira quickly got off her seat. She nudged Jasmine and the two ladies left. Mehran watched her go, few distance away Umaira turned back, their gaze getting locked.

Their eyes mirrored pain and a tinge of their long-lost love. Umaira then turned around and walked into the crowd with her friend.

Mehran turned around and blinked rapidly taking back his tears. He exhaled loudly closing his eyes.

'Sir?' Mehran opened his eyes when a bar tender interrupted him. The bar-tender has got him his drink.

'Are you alright?' Jasmine asked Umaira. She quickly wiped her tears and nodded. Jasmine read the unshed tears in her eyes and heard the unsaid words of her best friend. But she didn't say anything.

After the break-up, the relationship between Umaira and Jasmine weren't the same. Jasmine had a small crush on Mehran and never approved of Umaira's relationship with Mehran. So, she had always fed negative thoughts about Mehran to Umaira. Always filling her ears against him. Umaira had always ignored it, but the words got settled at the back of her head and eventually after the "alleged betrayal" Umaira subconsciously followed Jasmine's words and didn't trust Mehran, she didn't even give a chance to him to explain. Later, her ego stopped her from reconciling.

Seeing her best friend miserable, Jasmine felt terribly guilty. She tried her best to make her friend see sense, to realize her love but Umaira didn't claiming she will move on. And now, looking at the way Mehran still affected her, Jasmine realized Umaira hasn't moved on.

'Man! Don't drink too much.' Shadab warned Mehran. But he doesn't respond, he simply kept staring at the ice cube in his whisky glass. Shadab looked at him, he seemed to be in a deep thought.

'Dude, don't think about business now.' Shadab said shaking his head.

'She is here.' Mehran kept staring at the ice cube as he spoke. Shadab froze. He blinked at his friend and then smiled placing his palm on Mehran's shoulder.

'Dude, tonight is perfect. Clear everything.' Shadab suggested happily. Mehran looked away from his glass and looked at his friend.

'And? It has been five years...so much happened...' Mehran said.

'But...'

'Nothing can happen. Umaira will still not listen to me. And, I don't want to clear anything either. Everyone has moved on.' Mehran sighed and picked up his glass of whiskey. Shadab still thought it would be a good idea to clear things out, but he didn't argue. Maybe seeing Umaira after so long will back his sense.

***************************

The evening became excruciatingly long for Umaira. Ever since she saw Mehran, she couldn't stop thinking about him. This annoyed her. She wanted to go, but couldn't find an excuse. She kept meeting old classmates and some new juniors. She mechanically met and greeted them all. Speaking the only when necessary.

Mehran sat at the bar, watching his other friends drink and chat. He didn't dare drink, he knew very well that only few drinks down he loses himself. And he can't afford to look weak and vulnerable with Umaira being in the same party as him. Ever since, he saw her he couldn't stop thinking of her. Her eyes, it held so much pain... also love. Mehran shook his head. No! it wasn't love, he is over imagining.

**************************

A junior stood on the stage, he clinked his wine glass to get everyone's attention. Everyone looked at him. He smiled at everyone.

'Tonight, is a special night. Tonight, is the reunion night. Everyone here are meeting after ages and to make this more interesting. We have made a couples list and the ever-green pairs will have to dance together. Don't say no. Take this sportingly. Everyone gather around.'

Jasmine had to hold Umaira's hand and literally drag her near the stage. Shadab had to do the same to Mehran.

'First couple- Jeana and Joe, they were hot couple back in college days and now happily married (Everyone in the hall cheered)

Second- Shadab and Jasmine, the rumoured couple, they are still in denial (Jasmine frowned while Umaira smiled) Third- Ashok and Neela......' Everyone clapped at the couple walked standing on the stage together. Shadab and Jasmine met on the stage. They hugged each other and greeted each other in a friendly manner.

Few names later, the junior called 'Mehran and Umaira.'

Both Mehran and Umaira froze.
