CHAPTER 29- THEY HAVE A CHANCE AGAIN?

The Haldi function went on well. Umaira forced herself to enjoy the function, Huma's words echoing in her head. You guys still love each other. Trying to distract herself Umaira danced, drank, gossiped, clicked photos, spoke with Ibrahim but nothing worked. Irritated she left the function mid-way and decided to take a stroll near the pool in the backyard.

Umaira stared at the pool sadly as she walked, her mind recollecting memories, beautiful memories and she felt miserable. She frowned on seeing Mehran's reflection in the pool, she shook her head thinking him to be her imagination. She folded her arms across her chest and continued to walk. Now, hallucinating about him doesn't bother her.

'Not liking the function?' Umaira stopped walking as she heard Mehran's voice, her eyes widened. She turned around and found him standing behind her, dressed in yellow kurtha and white dhoti pants. His hair little ruffled with all the dancing, it looks like he hasn't drunk. Umaira realized she isn't hallucinating, he is here for real.

Mehran was getting hell bored in the party, he was still tried from the adventure in the morning. People around him were dancing, drinking. Shadab being the groom was made to sit in the centre and Turmeric was being applied on his cheeks, arms, and feet. Mehran being conscious of being a bad dancer didn't dance, he kept refusing Amreen's constant insistence. Finally, she grabbed his arm and dragged him to the dance floor. Also, being the bad drinker that he is, he decided it will be wise to not drink and create a scene. Instead, he decided to take a stroll at the pool side. Being away from all the chaos and being in fresh air will clear his head. As he stepped out into the backyard he saw someone walking along-side the pool. He squinted his eyes for close inspection and realized it's Umaira. He took a step back and turned deciding to leave. But then he saw her sad face and couldn't stop himself from walking towards her.

Umaira shook her head, 'Too loud for my liking.' She said looking away from him. Mehran nodded. Umaira felt him stand beside her and she felt nervous. The two of them stared at the pool, an uncomfortable silence between the two.

'How is your fiancé?' Mehran asked after a while. Though Umaira felt awkward with the question, she is happy that someone decided to kill the deafening silence between them. 'Ibrahim? He is fine. I spoke him a while back.' she said, looking at the pool. Mehran looked at her and then turned his gaze back at the pool.

'How is Siham?' Umaira then asked. Mehran nodded, 'Good, she enjoying her shoot.' He added. Umaira looked at him, he turned his head and their gaze met. They remained silent.

'You want drink or something?' Mehran asked as they walked together alongside the pool. Umaira shook her head. Accidently, Mehran's arm brushed against hers and she trembled quickly moving her hand away. She looked at him from corner of her eyes, Mehran seemed to have not noticed. They walked silently for a while until Umaira said, 'I am sleepy. I must be going.'

Mehran nodded, 'Good night.' he smiled.

'Good night.' Umaira replied with a small smile. She turned around to walk when Mehran stopped her.
'It was good talking with you.' he said. Umaira turned around and smiled 'Same here.' she said.

Though they hardly spoke, even though the silence between them was highly uncomfortable they enjoyed each other's company. They enjoyed just being in presence of each other. An old flame rekindling.

Mehran couldn't sleep that night, he kept reminiscing the time he spent with Umaira and an irrational thought crossed his mind, Perhaps, they have another chance of being together. But then his thoughts went to Siham and Amreen's word and Mehran felt guilty. He kept tossing in his bed, pacing in his room, rattling his mind, debating with himself. Finally, he retired to sleep deciding he could at least be friends with Umaira. The truth was that Mehran didn't want to stop seeing Umaira, with any pretence he just wanted to be with her, to be around her.
