Sing Me A Lullaby

It was three in the morning. You were lying in bed feeling restless from your hectic day. You were exhausted emotionally, but physically you could not for the life of you fall asleep. Usually, you and Hawks would be asleep in each other's embrace snoozing the night away. Tonight, though, Hawks said he would be out late and told you to go to bed before him.

That was close to impossible.

You felt cold without him even though you had the blankets wrapped around you. You felt so alone without him hugging you in his sleep. You felt empty without him in your arms and his head nuzzling in your chest.

To put it simply, you can't sleep without Hawks.

You turned to the cool side now that you warmed up your previous spot to the point of uncomfortable. You pulled out your phone to look at your wallpaper of you and Hawks. It felt different to lie in bed without him beside you but looking at his picture helped a little bit.

You opened his last message to you, I'll be late Babybird. See you in the morning ๐Ÿ’›

You smile at the heart he sent you and tossed your phone aside to try and sleep again. You close your eyes and hug Hawks' pillow that still carries his scent, just barely though.

You lay there for a few minutes when you hear heavy footsteps trudging towards the bedroom where you lay. They drag along the floor as quiet as possible and you know that it's Hawks finally coming back home. His walk towards the room tells you how exhausted he is from his long day of hero work.

You keep your eyes closed when the door slowly opens. All you hear in the room is the sound of Hawks kicking off his boots and his jacket fall on the floor with soft thumps and clinks. You feel the slight tug on the blanket as it drapes over your exposed body.

The bed dips as Hawks slowly collapses onto the bed, but he pauses when he sees you squirm. You curse yourself on the inside for moving when he was trying so hard not to wake you, not that you were sleeping anyways.

"Songbird?"

You heart clenches at how you realize you missed hearing his voice, despite seeing him just this morning. You open on eye to meet his and he smiles. He's propped on one hand beside you and you can see the exhaustion in his face as he looks down at you. His feathers are worn limp behind him but one is paused at the light switch like he was caught in the act.

"Why aren't you asleep, Babybird?" He cooed softly as he caresses your cheek.

You close your eye at his touch and sigh, feeling complete now that he's here. "I missed you," you reply.

A soft chuckle shakes the bed and he falls onto the bed. He looks straight into your eyes and says, "I missed you, too."

He leans in to kiss your forehead and props onto his elbow to tease, "I take it I won't be getting my pillow back?"

"Not until you change. The bed will get stinky like you," you tease back and hug his pillow tighter into your arms.

He hums in response and lazily gets up to change, then collapses onto the bed, making sure he shakes it enough to bother you. As he gets comfortable, you return his pillow, which he takes and hugs you. You sigh into his chest, finally feeling the effect of staying awake for so long. You can smell the sweat linger on his body from working all day, but he doesn't smell bad like you had teased.

He kisses the top of your head and rubs your back in small circles. You look up at him and ask, "Sing for me?"

He huffs out a small exhale with a smile and he raises a brow. "Sing? I thought you were the songbird in this relationship."

"Please, Keigo?" You plead into his chest as you hug him tighter.

He pats your back in response and says, "Fine. Only for you, my songbird."

You get comfortable in his arms and he continues rubbing small circles on your back. You hear the light switch click and a single feather tickle your ear as it passes by. Once you settle in, he takes in a breath before singing softly.

Wasn't really thinking, wasn't looking, wasn't searching for an answer
In the moonlight
When I saw your face

Saw you looking at me, saw you peeking out from under moon beams
Through the palm trees
Swaying in the breeze

I know, I'm feelin' so much more than ever before
And so I'm giving more to you than I though I could do

Don't know how it happened, don't know why, but you don't
really need a reason
When the stars shine
Just to fall in love

You can feel yourself slipping into the welcoming embrace of sleep, but you try and fight it so you can hear the rest of his song. With every word he sings so carefully, you can feel the vibration and his chest rise and fall with every breath. His beating heart lulls you to your slumber, but you open your eyes in defiance.

Made to love each other, made to be together, for a life time
In the sunshine
Flying in the sky

I know I'm feelin' so much more than ever before
And so I'm giving more to you than I thought I could do
Ooh

Now I know love is real
So when the sky high, as the angels try
Letting you and I
Fly love

By the time he ends his song, sleep is already gripping you and taking over. But just before you fully fall into its embrace, you hear Hawks whisper in a voice so quiet you almost miss it.

"I love you, Songbird."

Alternative Ending
You look up at him and ask, "Sing for me?"

He huffs out a small exhale with a smile and he raises a brow. "Sing? I thought you were the songbird in this relationship."

"Please, Keigo?" You plead into his chest as you hug him tighter. You look back up to beg him with your eyes.

He raises a brow at you then smiles reluctantly, "For my songbird."

You respond with a smile and watch as he sends a feather to flick the switch, then return to tickle your nose. You feel Hawks' arms pull you in closer when he takes in a deep breath. The mood is set with his hands rubbing circles on your back and his heartbeat in your ear.

Another deep breath and you know Hawks is going to begin. You close your eyes in preparation.

Get it get it get it get it get it get it get it girl

Your eyes snap open and you immediately know Hawks is playing you.

Get it get it get it get it get it get it get it girl

You push him away to see his arms and wings flail to his beat. It might be dark, but you know that he's grinning from ear it ear as he "sings".

Take her take her to the floor
Show her show her how you roll
Drop it drop it drop it low, drop it, drop drop it low

Just as he finishes, you smack his arm and shove his head into your loving embrace.

"Good night, Songbird," he teases whilst in your chest.
