Palette sighed, pulling her knees to her chest. She looked down a the valley below, her blonde hair blowing in the wind. She felt her chest tighten as her eyes stung with tears. She wiped her eyes, trying hard not to cry. She shook her head, patting her cheeks and puffing out her cheeks as a blush rose. She groaned, smacking her forehead.

"Oh, is the poor priestess is troubled~" Cooed a sickly sweet voice. Palette shot up, whirling around and glaring at the demon angrily. Her eyes never left him, narrowing. She despised this asshole with a passion. Cray's insane older brother, Fresh.

"Come any closer and I'll scream for help." Palette snapped, stepping back as he stepped forward. She was hoping he'd stop, because if she stepped any further back, she'd go tumbling down the mountain side and into the river in the center of the valley. Fresh stood still, his little servant right next to him.

Cray awoke with a start, a familiar scent flooding his nose. He stood up on his tree branch, the rest of the team sleeping peacefully below. He leapt from branch to branch, anxiety rushing through his veins. There was another scent. Palette. He thought. He leapt into the clearing directly in the middle.of Palette and Fresh. Palette sighed in relief, whilst Fresh stood silently, his face emotionless.

"Back off, Fresh." Cray growled, stepping in front of Palette. Palette smiled faintly, before sticking out her tongue at Fresh. Fresh rolled his eyes at her childish behaviour. Cray drew his sword, automatically activating it's power. Fresh growled, before smirking.

"If you hand over the girl, I'll let you and the rest go free." Fresh reasoned, extending a hand. Cray bared his teeth, putting the blade between them.

"No. I won't hand her over." Cray snapped. Palette blushed slightly, her eyes flashing in happiness. Her mood immediately dropped at his next words." How else am I supposed to find the jewal shards?"

Fresh smirk widened as he noticed how upset Palette was at Cray's selfish proclaim. He decided to use this his advantage.

"Hm, why do you help him, human? He is selfish, undeserving of your help." Fresh told her. Palette perked up, looking at him in surprise. She shook her head, furrowing her eye brows.

"You're no different." She shot back. Fresh sighed. Suddenly, Palette turned and bolted down into the valley, startling both of them. Cray looked back at Fresh, his eyes flashing in anger.

"Just what are you playing at?!" He shouted. Fresh only smiled innocently.

"You're obviously using the poor girl. I would do the same, but she'd know on her own." Fresh said, his eyes glaring with evil intent." I, at least, wouldn't say it aloud."

"It's not like that! I'm not using her!" Cray growled, his fangs growing slightly. Fresh laughed.

"You just said you only needed her to find the jewal shards!" Fresh reminded him. Cray's face lost all color as he recalled what he'd told them. He didn't really know what to say in return.

"Shut up!" Cray growled, before running after Palette. Speaking of that human,Palette was at the edge of the river, her legs scratched form the start branches. She use the water to clean her face of the tears she'd been crying. The rustling of bushes made her turn around in alarm. She slipped and fell into the river, letting out a shriek of surprise. Cray quickly rushed over, pulling the now soaked girl from the water.

"H-Huh...?" She squinted, rubbing her eyes and trying to get a clear view of her saviour. When her vision finally cleared, she stared for a moment. She blinked for a moment, before quickly jumping back in shock." Cray?!"

"Ok, 1, ow! And, 2, yeah, it's me." Cray replied, rubbing his ears. Palette let out a breath, shaking her head and standing up, looking rather flushed. She started to walk away when Cray grabbed her wrist. She looked back at him, raising an eye brow." W-What I said back there, about the j-jewal..."

"It's fine." Palette said, removing her wrist from his grip." I know you're just using me to get the jewal."

"No, I just-"

"You don't have to lie to me." She said, tears pricking at the edges of her eyes." We only a piece left. It was fun to pretend that we were friends."

"But-"

"Well, we need to head back to camp." Palette interrupted once again." The others are probably up by now."

"Look, I just-"

"Stop. It's nice that you're trying to keep pretending but you can stop." Palette said, holding up her hand and walking away." It was...nice of you to act like you didn't despise me. See ya back at camp."

Cray watched as she disappeared, her path leading directly back to camp. Cray was left standing alone at the side of the river, his chest contracting in pain. Was that really what he came off as? Pretending to be her friend to get the scared jewal? Tears rolled down his cheeks.  Maybe that was it at first, but now? He did care about her, he just didn't know how to express it.

Now, here he was, standing alone.
