Finest Hour

(A/N: Excuse me, for some slight errors. Apparently I can't understand a British accent so I relied on the ever annoying captions on YouTube.)

A few moments after the last chapter...

"Right, but why is Cinder laying on your lap? And why are you both on the ground." King asks entering the theater holding a shimmering crystal recording.

"Well clearly Cinder can't sit on a chair now can she? Also her ego was just brutally stabbed by Salem, so..." Saber replied, manifesting a cold compress and putting it on Cinder's bum.

"Can't you just like, heal her though?" King raises an eyebrow at the goddess.

"No. No, I kinda like her docile and not constantly threatening to burn down the house." Saber replies casually.

"Riiiigght. Moving on. We're going to be watching British Prime Minister speech on the House of Commons during the first half of World War 2." King began, turning to the rest of the audience.

"A speech boring..." Mercury rolled his eyes.

"Is it like professor Port's? Because I am out if it is." Yang laid her head back on her seat.

"Oh, trust me its nothing like that... Now any other questions?" King replies, looking to everyone in the room.

"No, but do you have any tissues? I have a feeling I'm gonna need it." Neptune replied, who gets tossed one almost immediately after asking.

"Right, now on with the show!" King announces, as the curtains covering the screen rises at the same time.

A young Qrow stands up from his sleep, as he  turns to look towards the beach with a mixture of emotions.

"It looks like a failed operation..." Ironwood deduced as the screen showed smoke and fire from a distance.

"Uncle Qrow looks pretty young here. But where is he?" Yang looked at Saber still on the floor.

"Right, ladies and gents. That is the Battle of Dunkirk, it is one of the most daring operations of the war. As Britain evacuated its forces at the last minute as German forces closed in from all directions. This battle saw the destruction of France's best armies and soon after the Fall of France itself. The British determined to bring their young men home, had even received help from British civilian ships by making the perilous crossing under heavy fire from the Germans from land and on the air. Or so I remember... The Qrow here is one such soldier in Britain." Saber explained to the audience.

"Damn, that's badass." Sun said, looking at Saber in slight disbelief.

"Private! I know were officers, but its us or the enemy! So now's not the time to be particular." Summer's voice rang out as Qrow ran towards Summer at the edge of the docks. Summer watches Qrow get on the boat before escorting Roman towards a ladder of the boat.

"Well, Ozpin got us thirty thousand, and then some. Almost three hundred thousand..." Roman told Summer, before stepping down the ladder.

"They were evacuating 300,000! That's such a large army..." Ruby awed at what the onscreen Roman said.

"Its a disaster is what it is... Impressive as it may, that would be a massive blow for the British." Ironwood stated in a serious matter.

"Still, they had managed to save 300,000 soldiers! I wouldn't call that anything other than victory." Yang said to the general even getting a few of students to nod their heads in agreement.

"Okay, that's it. I haven't seen something so stupidly irritating since Hitler speech spams, but damn. I need to make sure you morons don't think, something is a success just because you saved lives. No, Dunkirk was a massive disaster and a distasteful defeat. You can focus so much on the positives that happened, but it will never erase the fact that it and the entire Battle of France was flaming disaster. You think 300,000 lives makes up for the dead and captured of this disaster, the only positive thing that happened post-Dunkirk is that it saved those young men to fight another day. You all think that just because you saved lives, it just magically erases all the wrongs that happened before it. This isn't some fantasy world, just because you saved the few doesn't mean they'll just live happily ever after... So please, don't try telling anyone that anything is a success, if you had to save fleeing people... Because if it was a success, you wouldn't have to save fleeing people in the first place." King ranted at the sheer stupidity of Yang's statement.

"No, kids... Don't even try countering that statement, there is absolutely nothing successful about a failed operation. And every huntsman and criminal in this room knows it. So please, let's continue..." Saber said out loud, from her seat in the floor.

"So far..." Summer responded, lowering the beam separating the docks and the boat.

"So far?" Roman asked looking up at Summer.

"I'm staying. For the French..." Summer said, who only got a nod of understanding from Roman before getting on the boat.

"I'd like to say we would have done the same. But then I'd be lying, huh Summer?" Qrow remarked, looking down guilty.

"I told you to go, Qrow... It wasn't your fault. I needed you alive, especially for the kids..." Summer whispered to her teammate.

"Easy for you to say... You're already dead... But thank you." Qrow responded with a bitter smile.

I have myself, in full confidence. That if all do their duty, if nothing is to get and the best arrangements are made as they are being made. We shall prove ourselves, once more able to defend our island home.

To ride out the storm of war! And to outlive the malice of tyranny, if necessary for years... If necessary alone.

"Wait. Is the one speaking professor Ozpin?" Ruby raised an eyebrow, hearing that familiar voice.

"It would appear so, Ms. Rose..." Ozpin responded to the silver-eyed girl.

"Is Ozpin speaking infront of their council?" Ironwood looked at King.

"Ozpin is currently addressing the House of Commons, as he is currently the Prime Minister of Great Britain... This speech you're hearing right now is one of his most famous." King replied, turning back to the screen.

"What did he mean by alone? Surely they have allies right?" Winter asked.

"Well its really hard to have a lot of allies when you own more than 20% of the earth's total landmass, really. But, really at this point in the war Britain and its empire are the only remaining unoccupied country fighting the Axis powers. All of its allies the previous year had already fallen to the Germans, and as of the time this speech was said France had effectively fallen... And the war had only begun." King said, to the shock of some of the audience realizing how fast the Germans were able to beat the allies in WW2.

Qrow wakes up from his sleep as the train he's on signals their arrival at the station. As the train grinds to a halt, he opens the window and calls out to a newspaper boy just outside.

"Hey where are we?" Qrow asked.

"Flyting. We'll be pulling in, in a minute." The boy responded.

"What station?" Qroe shouts back.

"Wilting!"

"Throw me, one of them papers! Go on!" Qrow yelled, as the boy rushed to give him one.

Qrow browses through the article, his eyes landing on the headline Ozpin addresses the Dunkirk Evacuation at House of Commons.

"I can't bear it. You read it..." Qrow says with dismay, passing the paper to Raven who just looks at him.

"I can't bear it." Raven replied not moving from her street.

"What? What did the newspaper say?" Jaune said confused.

"That's the thing. They don't know, and they don't want to know." King responded.

"But why? Its not like they did anything wrong." Ruby said, looking confused as ever.

"Haven't you ever fucked up so bad, you just want to keel over and die? That's why." Mercury looked at the hooded girl with a raised eyebrow.

"No matter how you look at it, they failed their mission. Every person that escaped that day, are all thinking that their country will put the blame on them, that after all they lost and sacrificed they'll be thrown aside and blamed. And that my dear, is the sole reason for their demeanor." Watts glared at the screen, a feeling all too familiar gets the better of him.

"They'll be spittin at us on the streets. But then our lot got wind of the invasion..." Qrow answered, eyes glued to the newspaper.

The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need. Will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength.

"You know shit hits the fan, when Britain and France stop their centuries long rivalry." King snickers.

"A shame, Ozpin and Salem can't get along for the good of Remnant." Saber responded.

"She wants to kill us all! How could I possibly, get along with someone like that." Ozpin protested.

"Let me remind you, that you have made just as many mistakes... Let me remind you that you wasted a lifetime being a drunk, let me remind you who let that same woman spiral out of control after you're reunion... You are as guilty of your war as much as she is." Saber responded in a whisper coldly, which some in the audience did not catch.

Even though large tracts of Europe. And many other states have fallen, where they fall in the grip of the gestapo and the various collaborators of the Nazi rule.
We shall not flag or fail.

"Wars are not won by evacuation."

"Yup. There it is the scapegoating..." Watts murmured to himself.

A man knocks on their window as the train passes through the station. Making Qrow lower his head avoiding eye contact with the stranger banging on their window.

"But there is victory in sight of this deliverance. That should be noted." Raven continues, as the crowds outside the train began cheering for they're arrival much to Qrow's surprise.

"The Battle of Dunkirk arguably ended in defeat. But there is still a cause for celebration, after all they did save thousands of soldiers from an arguably worse fate." Saber sighed paying her attention back to the screen.

"So, what you're saying is Dunkirk may be a defeat. But its also a victory in its own way..." Winter deduced.

Two bottles of beer were passed through the window, as Qrow eagerly grabs them while Raven reads on.

"Our thankfulness to the escape of our army must not blind us, to the fact that what has happened in France and Belgium was a colossal military disaster."

"I think, we get your point..." Ruby says, nodding to King's earlier rant.

"Emotions mustn't blind you to the reality of the situation students. There is no victory in defeat merely a silver lining, if you will." Ozpin says nodding to Ruby's acknowledgement.

"And victory has its cost. One that you would all do well to remember... Least it bite you in back when you don't expect it." Saber said to no one in particular.

The plane from earlier continued to fly, lower, and lower. As its pilot revealed to be Taiyang attempts to land it on the beach to the best of his abilities.

"We must expect another blow to be struck almost immediately."

We shall go on to the end! We shall fight in France, we shall fight in the seas in the oceans, we shall fight with growing strength in the air!

We shall defend our island whatever the cost maybe!

"Yeah!" The students cheered on, strengthening their own resolve to why they wanted to become huntsmen and huntresses.

"Their will to fight on is admirable. Yet, I can't help wonder what would break their spirit?" Salem said resting her hand on her chin.

"You see Salem. Dividing people with fear may work for sometime, you could literally use their ideologies and morals to tear them apart. But at the end of the day, its not just about unity its about having the will to push on no matter what, especially against an enemy that's threatening everyone with mass extinction." Saber responded to the witch's musings.

"We shall defend out island whatever the cost may be."

"What?" Qrow looked at her incredulously.

"We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches" Raven continued.

We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and the streets, we shall fight in the hills.

We shall never surrender!

"I see now, why Ozpin is speaking... Always speeches filled with optimism and hope for his followers, only to end in death and defeat." Salem said bitterly.

"Not this time, fortunately." Ozpin replied with a not so fun expression.

"Ozpin. I hope you're complacency, doesn't lead people to DIE this time around." King replies rolling his eyes, having knowledge of their future anyway.

And if this island were subjugated and starving. Then our empire beyond the sea, armed and guarded by the British Fleet will carry on the struggle!

"Dad!" Yang and Ruby shouted as the screen showed Tai being captured by German soldiers as he watched his plane burn.

"The symbolism in your recording is quite good, Ms. Saber... Ozpin's speech is emphasized even more, when you watch those brave fighting men and their situations." Ironwood said, feeling they sway of the speech get to him as well.

Until in God's good time. The New World with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old!

Ozpin looks at King and Saber wondering if they chose this recording to warn him of the future. Then he looks at his students, and smiles to himself.

'Come what may, I will guide these children to one day be able to stand against the darkness. And maybe. Just maybe be the ones to finish it once and for all'

The House of Commons erupts in cheers as the Order Papers were waved and thrown as Ozpin's speech ended and walks out of the chamber as the room continued to cheer.

"What are those papers that are flying around?" Weiss asked genuinely curious of ots function.

"Figured the heiress would ask first." King laughed.

"Shut up. The Order Papers as they're called are used essentially used a sign of applause since actually clapping your hands inside the House of Commons is forbidden. So they used the next best thing. I maybe missing a few other features of the Order Papers but that's the gist of it." Saber answered.

"Now, I hope you learned a lot with this. And we can move on to more grimdark-esque? Matters." Saber said from her seat in the ground.

A/N: So yeah, that's this over and done with. Was supposed to finish and release this chapter last Sunday, but two of our puppies just died and coupled with a shit ton of homework, I wasn't really in the right headspace to write for a few days.

No definite release of the mext chapter although I do try to make ot once every two weeks.

Welp, that's that. So onto the the next chapter.

Love and Krieg...

Have a nice day/evening/afternoon
