Mary McDouglas was born in Chinaguacousy Township, Peel County, Ontario to John McDouglas and his wife Mary. She grew up with her 14 brothers and sisters in Portage La Praire, Manitoba. Married to Mark Fortune and resides in Winnipeg, Manitoba, she boarded the RMS Titanic at Southampton as a 1st class passenger.

She travelled with her husband, their 3 daughters Alice Elizabeth, Ethel Flora, Mabel, and and their son Charles Alexander Fortune. The family occupied cabin C-23-25-27. Mary and her daughters were rescued from the sinking, probably in lifeboat 11. Mary didn't remarry and died in Toronto on May 8th, 1929 at the age of 76.
