Mary Alice Holverson

September 21st, 1876 - May 2nd, 1918

She is a Virgo.

Mary Alice Towner was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania to Harry Luther Towner (1850 - 1913), a physician, and Ellen "Ella" Victoria Newell (1853 - 1882), both native Pennsylvanian who had married on August 8th, 1872. She had 2 siblings: Dana W (1874 - 1934) and Carolyn Belle (1882 - 1973; later Mrs. Milton Guernsey Berry). Mary appears on the 1880 census living at unspecified address in Athens, Bradford, Pennsylvania. Ellen died in 1882 only months after the birth of Carolyn and was buried in Toga Point Cemetery in Athens. Harry remarried Harriett Kaefer (born 1872) and they had a son, Clifford Anthony (born 1891), and a daughter, Winfred (born 1896), both born in New York. Her family remained living in Bradford, appearing on the 1900 and 1910 censuses.

Mary married in Manhattan on May 5th, 1906 to Alexander Oskar Holverson (born 1869), a salesman from Minnesota. They remained childless and appear on the 1910 census as residents of West 149th Street, Manhattan.

Aboard Titanic/April 14th-15th, 1912:
The couple had been on vacation in South America since 1911/early 1912, spending time in Buenos Aires, Argentina before departing for England where they arrived in Southampton on April 6th, 1912 aboard the Aragon and stayed at the Piccadilly Hotel in London.

For their return to the USA, Mary and Alexander boarded the RMS Titanic at Southampton as first class passengers on April 10th, 1912. Mary survived the sinking in lifeboat 8 but Alexander was lost in it. His body was later recovered and returned to New York for burial.

After The Sinking/Later Life/Death:
Mary returned to New York and never remarried. She continued to stay in Manhattan, later at West 122nd Street. The following year, on October 15th, 1913, Harry died. Reportedly a poorly woman most of her life, she died on May 2nd, 1918 at the age of 41 and was buried with Alexander at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, New York.

Her last known surviving sibling, Carolyn, died in Washington, D.C in October of 1973.
