June 15th, 1891 - April 15th, 1912

Kate Hargadon was born in Carrowmadoo, Ballingtogher, Ballysdare, Co Sligo, Ireland to Patrick Hargadon (born 1864), a labourer, and his wife Mary, née Creighan (born 1855) and had married in their native Sligo on February 13th, 1888. Born into a Roman Catholic household, Kate had 4 siblings, all sisters: twins Mary Anne and Bridget "Bee" (May 28th, 1889), Kate (born 1890), and Margaret (February 29th, 1892). Her namesake sister Kate died at 3 months old on March 26th, 1891.

Aboard Titanic/April 14th-15th, 1912:
Kate and her family appear on the 1901 census living at Carronaddoo, Ballingtogher and her father is described as a farmer. The 1911 census show the family by now living at Carrownamaddoo and Kate already left school and is working as a domestic cook. She boarded the RMS Titanic at Queenstown, Co Cork as a 3rd class passenger and she was traveling to West 126th Street, Manhattan; the home of a sister who paid for her journey. Kate appears to have doomed with Margaret Devaney and Mary Delia Burns.

Margaret Devaney, the survivor of the 3 girls, gives 2 different versions as to what became of her friends. In one, printed in the Irish World on May 4th, 1912, Margaret related:

"We were all on deck, not thinking it was serious, when the boy comes along and said "You girls had better get into a boat." Then he held out his hand, saying "I hope we'll meet again"...I got into the boat but Mary Burns and Kitty Hargadon held back, thinking it was safer to remain on the ship, I never saw them again..."

In another version, Margaret related that Kate aka Kitty was afflicted with seasickness and fear and couldn't face climbing a ladder to the higher decks; she remained in communal 3rd class areas; perhaps the aft well deck, and tended to by Mary who chose to remain with her. Whatever happened will forever remain a mystery. Kate died in the sinking and her body, if recovered, was never identified. Her sister Margaret later migrated to New York a decade later in May of 1922 but it's uncertain if she remained there. Bridget was married on June 8th, 1913 to tailor Patrick Henry. Her mother later suffered from Bridget's disease and died on December 11th, 1921; father Patrick died in August 18th, 1924 from heart failure.
