Catherine Buckley

March 6th, 1889 - April 15th, 1912

She is a Pisces.

Catherine Buckley was born in Springmount, Ovens, Co Cork, Ireland. She came from a Roman Catholic family that was fluent in both Irish and English. Catherine was the daughter of Jeremiah Buckley (born 1841), a farm labourer, and Julia Mahoney (born 1851), both natives of Cork who married around 1883, and she had one sibling: Daniel (July 22nd, 1886). Her father was first married to Ellen Collins and from that relationship she had an elder half-sister, Margaret (February 21st, 1880). The family appear on the 1901 census at house 30 Knockanmore, Ovens and the 1911 census at house 26 in Knockanmore. Catherine wasn't listed with her family on the latter census and was supposedly living and working in a nearby town as a servant.

Aboard Titanic/April 14th-15th, 1912:
Making plans to join Margaret, a cook who emigrated at the turn of the century and who lived at Montview Street in Roxbury near Boston, Massachusetts, Catherine originally purchased a ticket to travel aboard the Cymric, travelling directly to Boston. Her plans soon changed due to the coal strike and she was given passage aboard the RMS Titanic as a third class passenger. She boarded the Titanic at Queenstown, Ireland on April 11th, 1912 as a third class passenger. Margaret had sent the money for Catherine's ticket. Catherine most likely stayed in the stern of the ship on either the E, F, or G decks with the rest of the single women.

Catherine died in the sinking. Her body was recovered by the MacKay-Bennett on April 28th, 1912 before being returned to Margaret in Boston. Her body was returned to Halifax and forwarded on May 3rd, 1912 to Boston at the request of Margaret, Montview Street, Roxbury, Massachusetts. She was buried in an unmarked grave in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Catherine's parents back in Ireland blame for her death at the feet of Margaret and she was disowned. Returning to Ireland on Christmas, Margaret was reputedly turned away from the door. She returned to Massachusetts and in 1914 was married to gardener Maurice Dowd, a fellow Irish migrant. They settled in Boston and had 3 children. Margaret died in the 1920's. In the 2010, the Titanic International Society marked Catherine's final resting place with a headstone. It reads:

BUCKLY
CATHERINE
JUNE 3, 1889 - APR 15, 1912
LOST ON RMS TITANIC
BELOVED DAUGHTER
AND SISTER

Catherine's birthdate on her headstone is incorrect probably due to Ireland and America. having different ways of writing dates.

Rest In Peace Catherine Buckley.

Mini Rant: I understand that Catherine's parents were grieving and all but blaming her sister and one of them's own freaking daughter just because Catherine was following her to Massachusetts is fucking messed up and just straight up stupid. It wasn't at all Margaret's fault that Catherine was sent to the Titanic because of the coal strike and it sure as hell wasn't her fault that the ship struck the iceberg. This is just as dumb as blaming a literal child for the death of a parent when said child was a fucking infant.
