Happier (past!Steve Rogers x reader, Tony Stark x reader)

(Songfic based on Ed Sheeran's "Happier")

Walking down 29th and Park
I saw you in another's arms
Only a month we've been apart
You look happier

Saw you walk inside a bar
He said something to make you laugh
I saw that both your smiles were twice as wide as ours
Yeah, you look happier, you do

Ain't nobody hurt you like I hurt you
But ain't nobody love you like I do
Promise that I will not take it personal, baby
If you're moving on with someone new

'Cause baby you look happier, you do
My friends told me one day I'll feel it too
And until then I'll smile to hide the truth
But I know I was happier with you

Steve frowned as he saw you walking arm in arm with Tony. How had it come to this? How had Steve become the one longing to be with you? He'd had you and lost you. Now, you were with Tony and Steve had never regretted a decision more. You looked so much more happy with Tony than you ever had with Steve. "Hey, Cap," Tony greeted when he saw Steve.

Steve forced a smile on his face as he returned the greeting. "How's it going?" You smiled at him and it nearly broke his heart. "It's going well. I'd love to stay and chat, but I've got somewhere to be. I'll see you guys later." Without another word, Steve was gone. He took a risk and glanced back over his shoulder. You and Tony were smiling widely. It hurt to see. Even though everyone told Steve he'd be happy eventually, he knew that he'd only be happy when he had you again. He couldn't deny that he was happier when you were together.

Sat on the corner of the room
Everything's reminding me of you
Nursing an empty bottle and telling myself you're happier
Aren't you?

Ain't nobody hurt you like I hurt you
But ain't nobody need you like I do
I know that there's others that deserve you
But my darling, I am still in love with you

Steve decided the best cure for his heartache would be drinking even though he couldn't get drunk. So, he bought a bottle of whiskey and took it home. He plopped down in a chair and began drinking. He kept forcing the liquor down his throat until the bottle was empty. His mind was going crazy with the visions of you and Tony. He saw the two of you getting married, having kids, the whole works and it pissed him off.

He wasn't mad at you or even Tony, of course. Steve was mad at himself. He kept telling himself that you were happier. He tried to be happy for you. You deserved it. After all, it was Steve's fault for breaking your heart. He knew it was the biggest mistake, letting you go. He needed you. He was still in love with you.

But I guess you look happier, you do
My friends told me one day I'd feel it too
I could try to smile to hide the truth
I know I was happier with you

Baby, you look happier, you do
I knew one day you'd fall for someone new
But if breaks your heart like lovers do
Just know that I'll be waiting here for you

Steve let out a loud sigh as he glanced down at the empty bottle of booze. He wished he could feel the effects. Steve ran his hand through his short blond locks when there was a knock on his door. Frowning, the super soldier stood and walked to the door. Glancing through the peephole, Steve was surprised to see you on his doorstep. He swung the door open. "Y/N?"

"Hey, Steve. I just wanted to see if you're alright?" He arched a brow in question and you continued, "You looked a little...frazzled earlier." Steve shrugged. "I'm fine, Y/N." You scoffed, indicating that you didn't believe him. "No you aren't." Steve cursed in his mind. You knew him far too well still. "I will be." You nodded, but he could tell you still weren't satisfied and decided to change the subject.

"So, you and Tony, huh?" You smiled softly. "Yeah." Steve licked his lips, a nervous habit of his, and said, "He's a good guy. Does he treat you well?" You nodded again. "Good. You deserve it." Steve cleared his throat before asking, "Are you happy?" You placed a hand on Steve's bicep. "Yes, Steve. I am."

"I'm glad. If you need anything, or if he hurts you, I'll be here for you," he whispered, refusing to meet your gaze. "I know, Steve. I appreciate it. I don't think he'll hurt me, but it's good to know I have someone on my side. I have to go now." You gave his bicep a squeeze and turned to leave. The door closed behind you and Steve whispered to no one, "Anytime." Steve turned and walked back to the kitchen, his footsteps echoing through the empty apartment.
