22: meeting, finally

"Spencer, honey, please take a deep breath."

Spencer doesn't think he has ever been this nervous. Today his mother was flying in to meet Lexie. His mother's Alzheimers wasn't getting any better it was getting worse. She doesn't even recognize Spencer half the time he is over there to see her. Diana Reid hates flying, but Lexie is to pregnant to fly and Spencer wanted her to meet Lexie before he asked her to marry him.

Yes, he has a ring. He has had one hidden in the back of his drawer for almost a month, burning a hole in the back of his mind. Waiting for the right time was proving very difficult. He knew he wanted his mom to meet Lexie first. His mom's approval was very important to him, his mom meant the world to him. And so did Lexie and his daughter, so he had to be sure Diana and Lexie met before he popped the question.

He held onto Lexie's hand tightly as they waited for Diana and her caretaker to exit the plane. He knew as soon as she saw him she would scold him for making her fly, but they didn't have an option because of the baby.

"Spencer!"

Spencer jumped out of his chair to meet his mother, who was very frazzled from the trip.

"Don't you ever make me fly again Spencer, I don't think I can handle that," Diana said, looking around frantically.

"I won't mom, but you had to meet Lexie, and she can't fly." Spencer laughed, greeting the caretaker.

"Hello, Ms. Reid," Lexie spoke softly

Diana gave her a knowing look before she reached out and hugged the other woman. Lexie was shocked by the action but gave in to the hug easily.

"You are much more beautiful then Spencer writes," she said, smirking back at Spencer.

"Thank you Ms.Reid." she blushed.

"Call me Diana please, I'm not that old."

"Of course."

"You must be 30 weeks along, dear," Diana said, placing her hands on Lexie's quite large baby bump.

"31 weeks and 5 days," Spencer said happily.

The group decided to head back to Spencer's apartment, Diana told many stories about Spencer as a young child to Lexie, making her snort in laughter and Spencer blushes furiously.

Since the flight was long, Diana took a nap once they arrived back at Spencer's apartment. Diana was only staying two nights since sticking to a routine was better for her. Once Diana was asleep, Spencer and Lexie decided to relax on the couch.

"Your mom is so kind, now I know where you get it from," Lexie said, laying her head on his shoulder.

"She is something else, but she means the world to me," Spencer spoke softly.

"I know, I wish you could've met my mom, she would've loved you."

"How did she die?" Spencer asked quietly.

Spencer knew Lexie's mom had died awhile back, and she doesn't take to her dad much. She never really talked about either of her parents, she called Meredith often. Her other sister, Molly sent letters sometimes and would call every once in a while, but besides that, Lexie didn't talk about her family much.

Spencer knew what it was like to not talk to your dad, Spencer hasn't heard for his in years. He has thought about giving him a call but sometimes about, "Hey we haven't talked in years but guess what, you're going to a grandpa!" didn't sit well with Spencer.

"She died of the hiccups," Lexie said

"Hiccups?"

"Complications from hiccups, but still the hiccups," Lexie said nonchalantly

"I'm sorry," he said softly.

"It's okay, he blamed Meredith and things between them got bad for a while, but it's okay." She shrugged.

"My dad is another story, he loves me one day, but hates me the next - I gave up on that a while ago," Lexie said, sadness sewn in her voice.

Spencer brushed his hand in her hair lightly, "My dad sucks too."

"You're nothing like him, you know that right?" Lexie asked, sitting up to look him in the eye.

"I don't know..." Spencer said.

He thinks about this often, what if he was like his father? Sure, Spencer doesn't plan on leaving Lexie or his daughter ever. But even when his father was there, he wasn't the perfect father at all.

Spencer realizes that his situation as a child is very much different then what his daughter will have to grow up in, but with a mother who is a neurosurgeon and a father who is away on work every week, Spencer can't help but worry about what that will do to her.

"It's just, I'm always gone on a case, what if she thinks I don't want to be there for her?" Spencer asked sadly, his emotions getting the best of him.

"Oh Spence, you can't think like that," Lexie said, placing her hand on his cheek, "You are going to be the best dad ever, she will know."

"I'm scared," Spencer whispered.

"I am too, but we'll figure it out together, I promise," Lexie said.

Spencer brought his ear to her baby bump, laying his head down gently, "You are going to be someone amazing, I can get you into Caltech with one phone call, or any other ivy-league you want really."

Lexie smiled and ran her hands through his messy curls, jumping when she felt a kick from her bump.

Spencer's face lit up like a Christmas tree, quickly putting both hands on the bump as their daughter continued to kick away.

"Man, she's killing me." Lexie groaned

"You know, when JJ was pregnant with Henry she had me feel his kicks and it freaked me out, but this is amazing," Spencer said, face full of happiness.

Suddenly Diana was in the doorway when Spencer noticed he waved her over, "Mom, come here, she's kicking." Diana looked a bit confused, but walked over to the couch anyways, sitting next to Spencer.

"Who is that?" she asked Spencer quietly, pointing to Lexie

"That's Lexie, mom, my girlfriend I wrote to you about," Spencer said softly.

Lexie smiled at the sight, Spencer slowly talking to his mom about her. She loved it when Spencer talked about his mom, he loved her so much. He was willing to do anything for her, anything to make sure she was happy. Her heart swelled just thinking about how good of a father he will be.

"You're having a baby?" Diana asked Spencer, eyes wide.

"Yes, mom, a girl with Lexie."

"I'm going to be a grandma?" Diana said, bring her hands over her mouth.

"Yes, here feel," Spencer said, bringing her hands to Lexie's baby bump.

"Is this your wife?" Diana asked, pointing to Lexie.

Spencer and Lexie's faces went a bit red. Marriage scared Lexie, but she wasn't opposed to marrying Spencer at all.

"She is my girlfriend, Lexie." Spencer finally said, making eye contact with Lexie. Sending a spark through her.

"Well you should marry her soon, she is giving me a grandchild," Diana said nonchalantly, focusing her attention back on the baby bump.

Spencer chuckled nervously under his breath, but when he looked up at Lexie talking to his mom about his unborn daughter, he knew he didn't need to right moment, all he wanted was to marry the girl already. So that night once Lexie and Diana were asleep, he made a couple of calls.
