Nothing to Fear but Fear Itself

<This is a fic dealing with all the stuff we're going through, but it is not to make light of any of it. A huge thank you to the healthcare professionals and essential workers, you are the real heroes of this world. I hope everyone is staying safe, staying inside and doing everything we can to stop the spread of the pandemic. My love and prayers go out to every one of you.>

<This prompt is from @rossravenclaw. It's sort of a different spin, but I hope you like it! It's sort of a part 4 to the poisoned miniseries but it also totally stands alone. Please send fic ideas!!! I need more things to write! I have one idea involving an Agents of Shield crossover, but other than that I have nothing, so I'd really appreciate ideas!>

When the world all goes to shit, there's not too many better places to be than the Avengers Compound. When the virus had first come to America, Tony had issued an invitation to the Avengers to hang at the compound in the exact scenario of a complete lockdown. Peter hadn't wanted to leave May, but she finally convinced him, especially knowing she would be putting in extra shifts at the hospital and not wanting to expose him. He missed her of course, but they FaceTimed at least every couple of days, and that helped. Other than that, he did his best to keep busy with online school work, watching movies with Morgan, and training. Lots of training. In the wise words of Tony Stark, "just because the world is shut down does not mean we are, and when the world opens back up again, we will be there."

So of course, this meant insane training sessions at 7 am on a Saturday morning. Didn't Tony know he was a teenager? And teenagers need sleep. (He probably could get more sleep if he wasn't staying up until 2 in the morning watching The Flash, but it was just too good! After only three weeks, he had already finished the first five seasons and was working through the sixth. He needed to tell Friday to remind him to ask Tony if they could build a particle accelerator...)

So when Peter opened his eyes to a blaring alarm, he groaned. What new horror had Tony imagined for them today? He groped for his phone to turn the alarm off, squinting at the message.

Tony: time 4 some mental training :)))))

Peter rolled his eyes. Tony trying to text like a
cool kid was nauseating. And the smiles, he would do anything to never have to see that again. He scrolled to see other responses. Only Natasha and Cap had responded.

Nat: fuck off Tony I'm eating my pancakes first training can wait until 10
Cap: language
Nat: 🖕🏻

And since Nat in the mornings was terrifying, that was the end of it. Training had been postponed to 10. Peter didn't exactly like the sound of "mental training." He liked training his body much more, and besides, he had the AP Calc test coming up, wasn't that enough mental training?

At ten, Peter headed down to the training room, and he really didn't like what he saw. Tony, Wanda, and Bruce were standing next to a scary looking contraption. Like a magician announcing his act, Tony spread his arms wide. "Ladies and gentlemen, assassins and super powered people of all kinds, may I present the Fearscape machine!"

"Oh heck no." This came from Bucky. "We've all seen Divergent, and I really don't think any of us want to go through this. Personally, I've already lived my worst fears, so I'm gonna hard nope out of experiencing that again."

"Yeah I'm good too, I'd much rather kick some serious butt." From Natasha.

Peter could already feel his heart beating faster, he really did not want to face his worst fears. It was bad enough living with anxiety, this was not happening. He started to edge toward the door too, but suddenly the doors frosted over. "Sorry, guys. This is an important part of training. If we can't even face ourselves, how are we supposed to be fully prepared to face anything else? I promise you, it'll make you better superheroes. I'll even go first, prove there's nothing to fear besides your fears themselves."

And with that, Bruce began attaching the electrodes of the machine to Tony. "Ready?" He asked.

"See you on the other side." With that, Wanda raised her hands and her red magic flowed over Tony. A screen appeared and now they could see what he was seeing. After a few minutes and some expected, some surprising, Tony came back. "See? Nothing to it." He was breathing somewhat heavily, which detracted from the statement, but still.

"Who's next? This is important to bring us together as a team."

Cap went, and then Nat. Unsurprisingly, she had very few fears, but it was surprising that goldfish were one of them. ("What? I can't stand their beady little eyes."). Finally, only Peter was left.

"Do I have to?"

"The rest of us did, and you want us to treat you like a full Avenger, so now's your chance to prove you can be one."

Tony's words were gentle, but Peter still heard their edge. This was what he wanted after all, he could do this. He had died for gods sake, it didn't get much worse than that.

Taking a deep breath, he stepped forward so Bruce could attach the electrodes to his head. Wanda looked at him. "Pete, you ready?"

"No, but I'm going to do it anyway." Wanda nodded and released the magic. Peter closed his eyes, and when he reopened them, he was back on Titan, reliving every moment of that awful battle. He felt himself coming apart again , felt the terror overtake him as he turned to dust in Tony's arms, but then he remembered. Tony. Tony was his anchor. This wasn't real. And as fast as it had started, it vanished.

Now May was standing in front of him. He started walking to her, but suddenly two armed men grabbed her and held a gun to her head. Peter cried out and flung out his hands to snatch the gun with his webs, but nothing happened. He tried again, but he was powerless to stop them. A shot rang out and suddenly he was clutching May in his arms the same way he had held Ben in his final moments. She was dead. May was dead? How could that be? She shouldn't have even left the hospital yet, and she wasn't wearing her scrubs... because it wasn't happening. He let go of her and stood up. This wasn't real. He needed to keep reminding himself of that.

Suddenly, he was back in the training room, with the Avengers looking on at him. But something wasn't right. He looked around at all of them in turn, and his gaze landed on...Tony. His heart dropped. Tony stepped toward him. "Kid, what's wrong?"

"Get away from me! You're not Tony!" Peter screamed at him. "Someone help me, you need to take him down!"

"Peter, what's wrong? What's gotten into you?" Cap asked.

"Nothing's gotten into me, It's Tony! He's evil!"

"Kid...?"

"I'm not your kid!" And with that, Peter launched his webs at Tony. Tony barely dodged out of the way, but Peter wouldn't be stopped. He knew this was a simulation, so he just had to kill this Tony so he could get back to the real one. He readied his web shooters and was aiming a high voltage taser web when suddenly he was knocked to the ground. "Get off of me!" He screamed at Natasha. "He's the one you want to attack! He's mind controlling you!"

"Peter, please. Snap out of it." Peter just struggled more.

"You snap out of it. I'm right! I need to kill him so I can get back to the real Tony!"

"I am the real Tony!"

"That's what the fake Tony would say! You. Need. To. Die!" He brutally kicked at Natasha, managing to loosen her grip slightly. His spider sense went off, and he struggled out of Natasha's grasp only to be grabbed by Steve. Steve pinned him in a choke hold, and he yelled to Bruce.

"Bruce, now!" Peter saw Bruce moving toward him with a needle. Now he knew this was a simulation, because needles were another one of his worst fears.

Abruptly, he changed tactics. "Cap, I'm fine. Let me go." He only needed a second of hesitation in Cap's part to break free, and he took it. But he wasn't fast enough. He felt the needle plunge into his shoulder and he screamed, still trying to push forward and hurt Tony even as his world went dark. Cap caught him as he went down, and they wasted no time securing him to a bed in the Medbay.

"What happened to him? Wanda, did something happen?"

"No, after the scene with May, I released the magic. He wasn't in a simulation anymore, but he clearly still thought he was."

Tony shook his head. He was rattled, they all were. "Bruce, can you..?"

"Already on it. We need to figure out why this happened so we can avoid it in the future. Drugs of some sort is the most likely solution, I'm sad to say, but we can't rule out epilepsy or another mental disorder until I scan him carefully. There are several things that cause hallucinations."

Tony and Nat looked at each other. Peter wouldn't do drugs, would he? Bruce shooed them all out of the lab so he could work in peace.

A few hours later, Bruce came back out. "What's the news, doc?"

"The good news is I figured out how to reverse it, so he should be fine in a few hours, but the bad news is a psychoactive drug caused the attack."

"Peter really took drugs?"

"It's possible, but there's another explanation."

"What?"

"Traces of the drug were found on the electrodes of the machine, but none of us were affected."

"What are you saying?"

"Either me or Tony put the drug on the electrodes."

Everyone turned and look at Tony. "I didn't, I would never hurt Peter!"

Everyone looked back at Bruce. "I would never do something like this either, unless I did it unknowingly."

"What do you mean?"

"Someone else did this. Check the security footage."

"FRIDAY, show footage from the training lab this morning."

"Of course, sir."

And lo and behold, as Peter stepped up to the machine, time seemed to freeze, and a shadowy figure appeared and took the electrodes. His face was completely covered, but there was something about his movements that was familiar. "Beck."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Directly outside the building, Quentin Beck waited. As soon as he heard that, he took off. They were going to have a lot to deal with saving their spider child, and besides with the world on lockdown, they could never come after him. He had gotten his revenge on Tony Stark in the cruelest way possible, by destroying everything he loved. His first attack had been a warning, they should have known he wouldn't stop until Spiderman was dead, and Tony Stark was destroyed. He had poisoned Peter once, and he would do it again, gladly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Suddenly, Bruce's tablet started beeping rapidly. He ran back into the Medbay, Beck already forgotten. Peter's vitals were spiking horribly, and a rash was spreading over his entire body. Bruce yelled for Rhodey, as he was the other one with some medical experience, and they began quickly running tests and injecting Peter with different things, trying to get his body under control. After what felt like an eternity, he was finally stable, but the work had just started.

"Shit." Bruce looked at his tablet, which showed the results from the latest scan he had done.

"What is it?" Rhodey asked him?

Bruce showed him the tablet. "This is more than a simple psychoactive drug, it's destroying Peter's immune system. It has erased every single vaccine he's ever gotten, and producing a massive immune response, which could be lethal. His body isn't producing the necessary antibodies at the rate it needs to."

"So we need to help him produce more."

"Yeah, thankfully, we have that made. You go update Tony while I'll take care of Peter."

Bruce drew the antibody serum into a vial and moved to Peter's bedside, only to see Peter's soulful, feverish brown eyes staring back at him. Seeing Bruce, Peter whimpered. "What's happening?" He whispered.

"It's going to be alright, Pete. I'm taking care of you. You'll be better before too long."

Pete closed his eyes again, crying softly against the pain. Why did everything hurt so much? He opened his eyes again to see Bruce preparing to inject the antibodies into his IV port. "No..."

Bruce took his hand. "It's okay, Pete. You won't even feel this." He quickly injected it, and then adjusted the morphine dose so Peter would pass out again.

The next few days were a blur of the same, as Peter's immune system repeatedly flared up and had to be treated. Tony waited outside the room the entire time, as Peter had been completely quarantined besides Bruce in protective gear. "It's for his own protection. His immune system has been through a lot, we can't take any chances.

After what felt like forever, Peter was finally cleared for Tony to enter. "Tony, what happened?" Peter asked weakly.

"Don't worry about that now. What matters is you getting better. You need anything to help you get better?"

"I want to know who did this."

"I'll tell you in a little while, okay, kid?"

Peter was already tired, so he nodded. Tony waited until he fell asleep, and then snuck out of the room.

And if he tracked Beck and brought him to swift justice by throwing him in a shield prison, well, no one had to know.
