To anyone who didn't know Donovan, they would have said he was relaxed. He sat in the driver's seat, hand resting on the wheel, his face calm. But Carter wasn't just anyone and she knew exactly how nervous Donovan really was. The hand that held the steering wheel was white knuckled, betraying his grip.

The beginnings of a smile curled her lips. Despite the ten years of marriage behind them, she couldn't help but find amusement at Donovan's silent fear of her father. Reaching out, she rested her hand on the back of his neck, burying her fingers in his hair. He tensed, but relaxed after a second.

"You know you have no reason to be nervous," she said, toying with the end of his black locks.

The gentle sign of affection seemed to ease some of his nerves, but not all of them.

"I know."

It was a lie and they both knew it. Pulling her hand away, Carter rested her elbow on the center console, propping up her chin.

"Are you still afraid that one day Captain will look at you and tell you, you're not good enough for me, that you can't have me?"ย

Donovan's eyes snapped to her, before cutting away.

"I've never told you about that," he said.

Carter gave a soft chuckling, remembering a night years ago.

"You did, I'm not surprised you don't remember, you were very drunk."

Donovan swallowed hard, the memory of waking up hungover on Carter's couch with Steve standing over him all too vivid in his mind.

"I was positive he was going to shoot me," he said.

"He was close to it, but I convinced him that if he did I would never talk to him again."

Donovan took her hand and kissed the back of it, smiling at her.

"So it was then I told you about my fear?" he said, reverting his attention to the road.

The lights of the city lit up the night sky. Pedestrians crowded the sidewalk, filling the air with cheerful chatter as they stole memories for another day.

"Yes," Carter said. "And it was at that moment I feel a little bit more in love with you."

"A little bit more?" Donovan said, raising an eyebrow.

"For me, falling for you didn't happen in a single moment but pieces over time. Like when you told me to punch you at school after I had seen my mother. When you fiercely demanded that I couldn't come with you to get Link cause I knew you wanted me safe. When you kissed me at school, truly claiming that we were together. The smile you gave me when we were going through a third training course. You didn't seem bothered to be put through so many challenges just to date me." She let out a happy sigh. "Those and so many more. When you smiled at me learning we were going to have a baby. I can't seem to stop falling in love with you."

Donovan didn't say anything, a small secret, overwhelmed smile hiding on the edge of his lips. Their fingers still laced together, he held them to his chest, like he wanted Carter to feel the pounding of his heart and knew that it was hers and hers alone.

"So," she said. "It is for all those reasons that no matter what my father says, I will always belong to you, Donovan Keller. Nothing will change that."

They pulled to a halt at a stop light and he looked over at her, his eyes flooded with affection, admiration, and adoration.

"I love you, Carter Owens-Keller."

She stole a kiss before the light turned green.

"And I love you, Donovan Owens-Keller."

They spent the rest of the ride in silence, knowing there was nothing more to say. Donovan's nerves were calmed and Carter felt a bubble of excitement rise in her, one hand falling to her stomach.

They pulled into the alley and parked outside of the apartment. Light from inside cascaded over them as they climbed out. The evening was cool and Donovan used it as an excuse to wrap one arm around Carter, tugging her close to him. As they walked, his hand slid to her stomach, cradling the life growing there.

Maggie beamed at them as they entered the apartment. The air was warm with the aroma of fresh garlic bread and pasta. The living room had morphed over the years becoming something that was more colorful and homey. Photos lined the walls, depicting the brightest memories.

"Hi, girly," Maggie said, folding Carter into her arms.

The wrinkles around her eyes bunched together as she smiled at Carter. A glint entered her eyes and for a second Carter wondered if she knew her secret. Before she could say anything, Carter's father appeared. He shared a firm handshake with Donovan then wrapped Carter in his arms.

"I hope you're both hungry," Maggie said, walking back to the kitchen. "Cause food is ready and there is a lot of it. Danny!"

From the hallway, a twelve-year-old boy walked out. He was the spitting image of Carter' father except for the brown hair that hung a bit too long and the tanner shade of skin tone.

"Sarge!" he said, seeing Carter.

"Hey, Corporal, how's your time coming?" she asked, giving him a tight, quick hug.

A look of self-satisfaction filled his round face.

"I can now assemble a gun in three minutes."

"Well done," Donovan said, offering him a high five. "Pretty soon I'll have you on my team when you go through training courses."

Danny's eyes filled with wonder and excitement. "Are you serious?"

"Sure, I started when I was thirteen, you're almost there."

A smile spread across Danny's face and he looked about ready to explode from happiness. Before he could start pleading with Donovan to let him come early, Maggie waved everyone over to the table. As they ate, they shared updates on their lives, more of the stories being told by Danny.

When dessert had been served and finished, Donovan rested a hand on the back of Carter's chair and she took hold of his hand. The gesture wasn't missed by her father and he seemed to read the thoughts that passed between them.

"You have something to tell us," he said.

Carter nodded then exchanged a look with Donovan. When she turned back to her father, she was smiling.

"We're going to have a baby," she said.

"What!?" Danny shouted. "When? Can I take care of it? Does this mean I can teach him how to hold a gun? Or do pushups or handle a knife!"

Danny's ramblings continued unanswered as Maggie rushed around the table and hugged Carter, tears building in her eyes.

"Oh, hon! I'm so happy for you!" she said.

Carter felt tears gathering in her own eyes and decided to blame it on the hormones. As her father rose, Donovan did likewise. Smiling, Steve held out his hand, Donovan took it and was pulled it a rough, proud hug. As Carter watched the pair, a glow filled her chest.

"You're going to make great parents," her father said, one hand on Donovan's shoulder as he looked at both of them.

Though Carter still held a hint of fear she might fail, she knew that the man before her, her husband wouldn't, because he held the same fierce kind of love as Captain and she knew there was no better father than him.

Oh happy day! Happy day!

There you have it! Steve has been told and Donovan is still alive!

Haha I know some of you expected Steve to go off on Donovan for you know, sleeping with his daughter but hey they have been married for seven years, if they hadn't slept together in that time then there would bigger issues to deal with!

I don't know if it was what you wanted but I hope you were able to enjoy nevertheless.

Suggestions for other chapters? As always there are no promises.
