Parasomnia

I park my Jeep outside the animal clinic and try calling Liam one more time before walking inside. I have to step to the side while a young girl comes out with her dog. I go to the back where Deaton and Scott are. Deaton is examining the talons from the weird man of last night. "Find anything? I ask.

Scott glances at me and rubs under my eyes. I looked in the mirror this morning and noticed I have small bags under them. I was up half the night thinking about Liam. The kiss between me and Theo left him crushed. Now he's ignoring my phone calls and text messages. I don't blame him. School is going to be more awkward than ever. "I think so," Deaton replies. "Are you sure this guy was a werewolf? As far as I can tell, these claws are talons."

"I kind of figured that already," I say, picking one up.

"In fact, the talons of a harpy eagle, one of the largest known birds of prey."

"How can a werewolf get talons?" Scott asks.

"Personally, I'm more interested in how these were able to absorb your power. The only one who should be able to do that is a Beta of your making."

They both glance at me. "What?" I ask. I narrow my eyes and look down at the talon. "Someone like Liam."

"Exactly."

Scott and I exchange looks then look back to Deaton. "What if we let someone into our pack?" Scott asks.

"Like another Beta," I add.

"I would normally say no," Deaton replies. "But I'm starting to think that the supernatural world rules are not as rigid as I once thought. Especially now."

When he says this, he looks directly at me. I shake my head. "I think they were at some point but there's someone out there. I think that someone is trying to change those rules and they started with me."

"Maybe you can see something to help us."

I look between the two and sigh. I flick out my claws and squeeze on the talon. It takes a couple seconds before I get anything:

I see Parrish walking through the woods naked and carrying a dead girl. His eyes are glowing and he looks like he's on a very important mission. Then I see the Nemeton, or what's left of it. Parrish places down the body and everything catches fire. He just stands there as it burns along with him. I then see that there are hundreds of other bodies around the Nemeton. The fire rolls and hits me.

I snap back out and I cough as if I was really there. I look at my hands and they've suddenly become covered in ash as well as my arms. I look at Scott and Deaton. They have the most concerned look that I have ever seen. "What?"

"Your eyes..." Scott says. "They changed different colors."

"What colors?"

"Red, then blue, then yellow, then jade green like Kate, amber like Kira and then the color of Parrish's eyes sometimes."

"What does that mean?" I look to Deaton for answers. "Is that bad?"

"I don't know," he replies with a huff. "It could mean a number of things. What exactly did you see?"

I walk across the room to wash my hands and arms. "It's complicated because I saw nothing that had to do with that man or talons. But, based on what I saw..." I turn and lean against the counter. "There's something coming, something beyond our control and management."

"What do we do?" Scott asks.

"The only thing we can really do is wait. I'll let you know if I see anything else."

I drive to school five minutes after Scott. I want to be on my own for the ride to get my thoughts together. For my first day of senior year, I decided to keep things casual. A white shirt, red and black plaid flannel shirt, black jeans and black sneakers. I left my hair out the same way it was last night. I decided to wear the cure around my neck, to keep it close. I didn't want the same two strap book bag as last year so I got an over-the-shoulder type bag. I can carry my laptop in an easier way.

I take off my helmet and walk inside. I look around and sigh. Last year at the craziest high school in this state. I wait by the entrance to see if I run into Liam when I see Theo walk by. I try to avoid his eyes but he walks up to me anyway. "Hey, fellow senior."

I can't resist his smile. I glance behind him and see Liam go into his class with Mason following behind him. "What class do you have?" he asks.

I take out my Biology textbook. "AP biology."

"Cool, me too."

I end up walking with him to the class. When I get there, Lydia, Kira, and Scott are already there. As I'm walking by, Lydia stops me by grabbing my wrists. "Okay, two questions and I want complete honesty, okay?" I just nod. "One, why are you walking with that guy?"

"He's an old friend of mine. Next question."

She points her pencil to Scott. "Did you know he was in this class?"

"Yeah, I did. We were both picked for it. What's the problem?"

She just raises her eyebrows and shakes her head. I walk to the back and realize only one seat is left. Next to Theo. I slowly sit and try to be on the far end of the table as possible. The teacher, Mrs. Finch, walks in and starts off with questions. She asks about plasmids. "They are circular, self-replicating DNA molecules often used in cloning proteins," Lydia replies with ease.

Mrs. Finch asks her what vitamin is absorbed in the stomach via parietal cell production of a glycoprotein. Lydia doesn't know. "B-12," I reply.

I can tell Lydia is surprised I knew while she didn't. Mrs. Flinch asks Scott if he knew the answer. He says he didn't. She then asks him about his number one college pick which he says it's UC Davis. "It's the best school on the west coast for biological and physical sciences. You're in the right class if that's what you want. "Who else in the room believes they are in the right class."

Theo raises his hand and I raise mine with a smile and scoff. A few others also raise their hand. "There will be a test to help you determine if you should be in this class and you have two weeks to drop it if you decide you shouldn't."

I open my textbook when my vision flashes, unexpectedly. I see one of the other seniors, Tracy. Her eyes are glowing like a werewolf. A Beta. She has fangs and claws. The whole nine yards. Then I see her throwing up a black fluid, the same fluid that covered the man last night. She holds up the black feather of a raven. Before I can see anything else, I flash back and fall out my chair. I begin coughing. It was like I was punched in the stomach or something is blocking my airway. Probably the second one. I would cough for a while then take in a sharp gasp of breath. "Scarlett?" Scott says.

When I try to speak, the cough gets worse. "She can't breath!" I hear Theo yell.

"Get her some water," Mrs. Flinch says.

"That won't help."

I feel someone pick me from the floor. The scent isn't Scott. I look up at a worried Theo. He places an arm under my knees and the other behind my back. He rushes me out the room. I try to control my breathing but a cough fights me every step of the way. I hear Stiles, out of nowhere, yell, "Dude, what the hell!?"

He tries to take me but Theo tightens his hold. "Something's wrong."

I hear Scott come running down the hall. "I got her pump! Get her over a trash can!"

Theo carries me to the boy's locker room where there are freshmen. They're all confused. "Move!" Theo yells.

They put me over a trash can and force me to take a few hits of my asthma pump. The last time, I think I'm fine. I try to get up but a cough returns, except worse. I let out one huge cough and I puke in the trash can. It comes all at once. No breathing breaks. Once it all over, I wipe my mouth and my fingers get smudged with a black liquid. The same liquid Tracy threw up. All the freshman are all gathered around, terrified. I see Liam push through the crowd and hand me some napkins. I hesitate to take them. He kneels down and wipes my mouth gently. "Liam, I-"

"I know."

I let Scott and Stiles go off with their free period. I'm about to walk out the locker room when I see gum on the back of Liam's jeans. He's digging through his locker for other pants, getting frustrated by Mason's ranting. I go into Scott's locker and grab his spare jeans. "Liam."

He turns with a huff. I hand him the jeans and walk out without conversation. As I'm sitting outside, Stiles and Scott come running out with Theo. "Scarlett!"

"Guys, I'm fine. I ju-"

"No, I need you to clear something up for me," Stiles says. "Can you see something and still talk?"

I stand in confusion. "Yeah, why?"

He holds out Theo's hand. I look at Theo who looks a bit annoyed. I slowly grab hold of his head, press my thumbs into his temple and concentrate. Something does flash through my head, a memory. A voice in my head starts speaking as if narrating it. I repeat everything it says. "The night Theo was bitten, he was skateboarding in an empty swimming pool when he fell and his skateboard went flying into the air. For some reason, it never came back down. He realized this and, when he looked up, a man with red glowing eyes and claws was standing on the lip of the pool holding the board. The Alpha werewolf bit him on the side and, by the time he figured out what was going on, he'd heard that the Alpha that bit him had been killed by two of his Betas who were also twins. Aiden and Ethan."

I snap back but don't go into a cough attack. Stiles is impressed. While I'm walking to my motorcycle, I get a text from Lydia to meet me at Tracy's house. She sends me the address. I go in and all the way up to her room. Parrish is standing on a chair and looking through her ceiling window. He steps down and claims he sees nothing. "Hey, Scarlett. Tracy's been having these weird dreams. You think you can help? She said she thinks someone was on her roof, trying to break in," Lydia explains.

"Are... Are you a cop?" Tracy asks.

I shake my head. "Not even close."

I push open the ceiling window and haul myself up. I cover my mouth to prevent myself from screaming the entire roof is covered with dead ravens, all covered in black goo. I jump down and glance at Parrish. He slightly shakes his head. I sigh and close the window back. "I think you were just having a nightmare that you thought was real. It was a pretty bad storm last night and it's very common to have dreams like that."

That night, I park out with Scott by Sties' Jeep. Apparently, Stiles has been having suspicions about Theo so he decided to follow him. "This is beyond crazy," I say. "Even for Stiles."

"You really wanna talk about crazy?"

I laugh and watch as Stiles and Liam coming out to the Jeep. "Find anything?" Scott asks.

"Nope," Stiles says, hurrying to his jeep.

"I fell in a hole," Liam adds.

"It was the bridge where his sister died, wasn't it, Stiles?" I ask.

"Yes, it was. It was quite embarrassing so we can leave now."

Stiles tries to start the jeep but the alternator or electrical system will not cooperate. Stiles asks Liam to get in the drivers' seat while he checks under the hood. Me and Scott stand next to him while he tries to fix his jeep. "Stiles," Scott says.

"Give me one sec. Try it!"

Liam turns the key and nothing. "Stiles," I say this time.

"Okay, yes, we followed him out here. What do you want me to say? That I'm a stalker? That I'm crazy? That I-"

"That you should have given him the benefit of the doubt."

"I give people the benefit of the doubt," he says in a low, angry tone. "I have given a lot of benefit to a lot of people."

"Like Derek," Scott points out. "Kira, Liam."

"Me," I say as soft as I can.

"I was right about Peter. Try it again!" Still nothing. Stiles bends his fingers into an almost fist in frustration. "You know, I bet you still think there's maybe something in him that could be saved."

"Maybe," is Scott's only reply.

Stiles has Liam try turning the key again. Still nothing. "Why can't you trust anyone?" Scott asks.

"Because you two trust everyone!"

He slams his fist into the jeep and breaks his hand. "You could have broken it," Scott points out.

"It's not broken."

Scott takes our friend's hand and draws out the pain and injury. I put my hand in the engine and start it up again like I did the night of the senior scribe. The Jeep, again, starts. Tears form in my eyes and, when I look at Stiles, tears are in his as well. "I trust everyone because, like someone once told me, no one gets left behind. If we're stripped of family, we're all we have, Stiles."

I give Liam a ride to the school to work out with Mason. When we get there, Mason is coming out. Liam apologizes for being late but Mason says he isn't late but that he missed it. Mason worked out for two hours without him. "I forgot and I'm gonna tell you why."

I realize what he means. I grab his wrist. "Liam, no."

He snatches away. "I have to. I'm gonna tell you a lot of things, a lot of hard to believe things. Really, really, hard to believe."

"There's a wolf," Mason says.

I slowly turn and see a black wolf behind us. "Run!"

The three of us go running down the school hallway. Mason runs up some stairs while me and Liam turn. We both growl at the wolf, sending it running off. I slowly turn and see Mason shocked on the stairs. I put away my fangs but my glowing eyes still remain. Mason slowly comes down the same. "There's something I gotta tell you," Liam says.

"I think he's already figured it out."

Mason smiles. "You and your girlfriend are werewolves."
