Heart Moniter

I'm not allowed to go back to school for a week. Just until my arm heals. As for my side wounds, they are long gone. So, I stay in bed all day. In the middle of the day, there's a small knock on my door. I sit up and pull my legs over the edge. "It's open."

I'm surprised to see Lucas walk in with his hand behind his back. "Hey," he says.

I stand up. "Lucas. What are you doing here?"

"I had to come check on you. I heard what happened and I kind of felt bad."

"What is that behind your back?" I would rather not talk about what happened. He hesitates then he reveals a large brown teddy bear and I can't help but laugh. "You didn't have to do this."

I take the bear and place it on my bed. "So, how did you hear about the accident?"

He shoves his hand into his pocket. "Well, let's just say that you are pretty famous for risking your life for the sheriff. It was on the news and in the morning paper. They even recognized it on the announcements in school."

I shrug. I am still replaying everything in my head. I didn't feel like a hero nor did I want to be called one. Lucas suddenly steps forward and puts a hand on my face. His fingers curl into my hair. He is close enough for me to feel his breath on my top lip. He just nods, letting me know what he is about to do. "Scarlett," he whispers.

"Lucas."

He leans down and presses his lips to mine. This is the first time he has ever kissed me first. Of course, I kiss him back. One of his hands slips around my waist and hold me to his body. The kiss gets so intense I pull back for air. I just keep my eyes closed, breathing heavy. I can hear him breathing heavy and his heart racing. When I look up, he's smiling. "Wow," is all I can say.

That makes him laugh. He takes his hand off my waist and steps back. I just tuck my hair behind my ear and huff. He nods his head and points to my laptop. "May I?"

I nod. He sits at my desk and goes online. I sit on Scott's bed and just listen to the sound of my keyboard. He turns around and shows me a burning house. "I was in the computer lab and overheard your brother and his friend talking about someplace called the Hale house. It sounded interesting. I did some research. I knew a fire happened there but there was more to it than I thought. Do you know anything about it?"

I hesitate. "Well, yeah, it happened before I moved to San Francisco. It was pretty crazy."

"Well, the whole family inside died. Except for Peter Hale and Derek Hale, his nephew."

I gulp. Derek's uncle is alive? "Well, that's better than nothing, right?"

He just sighs. "I overheard Stiles talking about you today with McCall. He was saying some...sweet things about you so I set him straight for you."

"You did what? Lucas, why did you do that?"

"Come on, we're dating and I'm not gonna let my teammate who doesn't even play, talk all gushy about you."

I just stand up and open my door. "I think you should go before, um, my mom comes home and finds a boy in my room."

He nods and walks to the door. "Feel better."

I nod. "I feel better already."

Later at night, Scott texts me to meet him at the clinic. When I get there, about three hours after getting the text, I hear Scott yelling. I rush in to see him lashing out at Derek. "Hey!" All the yelling stops and everyone looks at me. "What the hell is going on?"

I glance at Derek and look back Scott. "Derek thinks Deaton is the Alpha," Scott explains.

I look at Deaton. "Him? Why?"

"He knows too much about werewolves," Derek replies.

"I'm not an expert on werewolves yet but can't you smell the difference between dog and human?"

"He smells like dog."

"Don't know if you realize but he is, in fact, a vet. He works with dogs and cats. Why don't we just settle this? All werewolves signal each other by howling, right? Let's go to school and call the real Alpha."

When we get to school, I wait outside with Derek, Deaton in Derek's car, while Scott and Stiles go into the office. I lean against the car. "Did you hear about what happened?"

"Yeah, it was pretty stupid."

"Why?"

"You are a five foot five girl and thin as a twig. You pushed the sheriff across a parking lot. You did that in less than twenty seconds from where you were standing. It makes it a bit obvious."

"Okay, first of all, I'm five foot six. Second-" I'm cut off by a screechy noise that echoes from the intercom outside. I close my eyes, with a sigh. I shake my head and run my good hand through my hair. A minute later, a deep howl sounds through the woods. I stand to my full height. Derek and I exchange worried looks.

Scott and Stiles come hurrying outside and greet an upset Derek. "What the hell was that? Are you trying to attract the whole city?"

"Sorry, I didn't know it would be so loud," Scott replies.

"Yeah, it was loud and it was awesome!" Stiles exclaims.

I high five Stiles with my good hand. "Yeah, it was!"

"Shut up," Derek says.

"Don't be such a sour wolf."

I glance at the truck and see Deaton gone. "What did you do with Deaton?" Scott asks

Derek glances at his empty truck. "I didn't do anything."

"I was out here with him, Scott. Deaton was just here..."

I see a giant wolf with glowing red eyes appear. Before Derek could turn around, the Alpha stabs him through the back, lifts him up and throws him to the side. We don't know what else to do so we run into the school.
