Fireflies

Derek carries me into the hospital. A nurse tries to take me but Derek turns her down. "I'm looking for Ms. McCall. This is her daughter, Scarlett McCall."

I pass out again. I wake up to my mom holding a light in my eye. Derek is standing behind her. The pain isn't as bad as before but it's still there. Derek gets a call from Scott and has to leave. Stiles walks in a half hour later. "Lydia found a body by the pool."

I sit up. "What? Was it Boyd and Cora?"

"That's what I thought at first. But, your mom looked at the body. She's discovered three different causes of death – strangulation, exsanguination through a cut to the throat and a massive blow to the head. Also, this is the second one to come in with the same wounds."

Just by the look in his eyes, I know who it is. "Heather," I whisper.

He just nods. He holds up a photo. It is of a bloody hand with a purity ring on it. "Wait, Stiles, you said Heather and you were suppose to lose your virginities to each other."

"Yeah."

"A purity ring means to not have sex until they're married. I use to wear mines after I took a sex ed class. Which means..."

"They were both virgins."

"I remember reading about something like this. It was called something I can't remember when they are killed in threes."

"Three Fold Death."

I nod. "Stiles, these aren't just murders."

"Someone is making human sacrifices."

We explain all this to Scott. They then find a body of a girl, Emily, who was a virgin. This is beyond supernatural. That night, I'm dreaming about pure darkness when I find myself in the middle of a field. A voice whispers in my ear, "Healers." I stand completely still. "Virgins," I whisper. It was like I had no control over my own mouth. "Guardians." I fall to my knees. "Warriors." I'm lying on the ground, gazing into the darkness. "Philosophers."

While at home, I'm reading on my bed while Scott is talking to Stiles on Skype. "Hey, Scarlett?" I hear Scott say.

I finish the sentence I'm reading then look up. "Yeah?"

"How much do you know about these sacrifices?"

I close my book and sit all the way up. "Well, it's complicated. The threefold death was suffered by kings, heroes, and gods. Some proponents of the trifunctional hypothesis distinguish two types of threefold deaths in Indo-European myth and ritual. The first type is when one person dies simultaneously in three ways. He dies by hanging, or strangulation or falling from a tree, by drowning, or poison, and by wounding. These three deaths are foretold, and are often punishment for an offense against the three functions of Indo-European society. The second form of the threefold death is split into three distinct parts, these distinct deaths are sacrifices to three distinct gods of the three functions."

"Who could possibly want to do mimic that?" Stiles asks from the video chat.

"Someone who wants revenge."
