A Novel Approach

I stand by my locker and try to brush off whatever I thought happened to me with the Dread Doctors and Theo. I was dreaming and it felt real. It has happened before with Stiles and the nogitsune. When I told Theo about it, he laughed and called me crazy. Then he swore to me that he would never hurt me by working with the Dread Doctors and I believe him. He seems like the only person I can put my faith into anymore. Things have been tense between me and Scott. Ever since I told him I wouldn't be by his side anymore, he barely says three words to me. A small part of me regrets saying what I did but another part keeps telling me that it was best to let it out now then later. I haven't spoken to Stiles since we talked on the phone as well.

"Scarlett?"

I snap out of my thoughts and turn around. Ms. Martin is standing there, smiling. I shut my locker. "Hi, Ms. Martin. Something I can do for you?"

"Yes, I would like to talk to you in my office."

I follow her into what use to be Ms. Morrell's office. She sits in her desk chair and I sit in the chair across from her. "So, what is this about?"

She takes out a blank notepad and pen. "Well, a few of your friends came to me and were worried about you and I saw that you use to meet with Ms. Morrell and I thought mayb-"

"What friends and what could they possibly be worried about?"

She slips off her glasses and leans in. "Well, Scott notices that you sometimes have trouble sleeping and have a hard time focusing in class. Stiles Stilinski told me about your situation with Theo Raeken and Liam Dunbar. Then your mom called and told me about your offer to go to London for college."

I cross my legs and lean back in my chair. "What do you wanna start with?"

"Well, why don't you tell me what happened between you with Liam Dunbar. From what I've heard, you two had a great relationship."

I shift awkwardly in my seat. "Well, Theo and I were great friends back in fourth grade. He moved away then I moved to San Francisco. He just came back for senior year. It was really awkward. The night before senior year, I came back from South America. I was so happy to see Liam, Scott and Stiles. But, that night, Theo kissed me and Liam saw. After that, things weren't the same. Some girl came to me and said she was Liam's ex and that he was using me for popularity like he did with her. I believed her. When we broke up, I went straight to Theo."

Ms. Martin was writing the whole time. "From what I'm hearing, Theo came in and got in your head."

"No, Theo isn't like that. He would nev-"

"Scarlett, don't you think you're blinded by the fact that Theo is using charms or his good looks to manipulate you?"

I start looking back. Theo kissed me that night. Maybe he knew Liam was coming. Theo overheard me breaking up with Liam. He knew it all and planned it from the start. "I think you're right. Maybe Theo was trying to take me from Liam to have me all for himself."

"Exactly. Now, let's discuss your offer to London. Do you think you'll go?"

"I've really thought about it. But, London is so far away. I don't think I could ever handle being far away from Scott or Stiles or Lydia or my mom. I want to go to UC Davis with Scott and become a nurse like my mom. London, I have full scholarship but I think I have enough credits to get one for UC Davis."

She looks up and smiles at me. "Well I know you're a very bright girl and I know you will figure out which is best for you and your future."

That night, I'm downstairs in the living room when Scott and Kira come downstairs and walk toward the door. "Where are you guys going?" I ask, standing up.

"Um..." Scott stutters.

I see Kira pressing her lips together. If there's someone who's bad at keeping something in, it's her. I take one step forward. "Kira?"

"Eichen House!"

I raise my eyebrows. I look to Scott and wait for an explanation. He sighs. "We're going to see Dr. Gabriel Valack. He might know something about those creepy doctors we saw."

I sigh and grab my jacket. "I'm coming. No point in trying to stop you so I might as well go with you."

"Scar, you weren't exactly...stable when you came out of there. Lydia and Stiles will be with us. We'll be fine."

"Stiles was in there too. We're both fine now. I'm not taking 'no' for an answer. Last I remember, I said I was coming. I didn't ask your permission."

I ride my motorcycle behind Stiles' Jeep. When we pull up to Eichen house, my throat closes up a bit. Just the sight of the building brings back all the hell suffered inside. I put my helmet on the handle of my motorcycle and go stand by Stiles' Jeep with Scott and Stiles. Lydia and Kira try buzzing in. I lean against the hood of the Jeep, next to Stiles. He has tears on the border of his eyes and I can feel his heart rate quickening. "Are you two going to be okay in there?" Scott asks.

"Yeah, why?" Stiles replies.

"You just seem a little off."

"I think we're all off," I say.

"Maybe some of us more than others."

Scott glances back at Kira. "Wait, what happened?" Stiles asks.

Scott turns back and sighs. While he's explaining what went on with Kira, I start hearing a soft whisper in my ear. Donovan. I look around and look for anyone else in the area. I take hold of Stiles' hand for comfort when my vision flashes:

Stiles is struggling with Donovan in the parking lot of our school, by his Jeep. Donoan has his hand pressed into his shoulder. When he pulls it back, it reveals a mouth with many sharp teeth on it. Stiles manages to get away, head butting him and striking him with a wrench. He runs into the school and Donovan follows. The same mouth on his hand appears on his neck briefly then disappears. Stiles uses his student ID to get into the library key card reader and unlock the doors. Donovan does the same with another key card a few seconds later. When he goes to hide, he drops his phone but doesn't realize it. Donovan calls out to Stiles. Stiles phone buzzes. Donovan picks it up and says, 'It's Malia. Should I ignore it or text her back?'

Donovan begins to tell a story about how his father became paralyzed in a shootout. A bullet shattered his T-9 vertebra. Sheriff Stilinski, a deputy at the time, was calling for backup at the time and Donovan believes this to be cowardice on Stilinski's part. He says his father was paralyzed from the waist down by the incident and he blames the sheriff.

Stiles, from his hiding place among the rows of books, sees Donovan climb the stairs but seconds later Donovan is on the same level and grabs Stiles by the throat pulling him through the bookshelf. They struggle over to some scaffolding repairmen are using to do construction on the interior. Stiles begins to climb. Donovan quickly grabs his legs and says he plans to eat them.

His eyes flash white. Wendigo. Stiles sees a pin with a ring just above him. It is holding up part of the structure and he grasps for it. Finally getting hold and pulling it out, he releases several metal bars on top of Donovan. He falls backward impaled on one of the bars. Stiles approaches and starts to try pull the bar out of Donovan's' chest but stops. Donovan gasps, coughs and dies. The same silver fluid from Tracy spills out of his wounds. Mercury.

I flash back and drop Stiles' hand. "Scarlett? You okay?" Stiles asks.

I slowly nod my head and walk to the gates. They buzz and open up. Right before I walk in, Lydia grabs my hand and walks by my side. It's her way of comforting me even though I don't really need it. When we go in, the orderly puts out a clear container. "Please empty your pockets into the container."

"We're here to see-"

"Please empty your pockets into the container."

Everyone pulls out phones and such. Lydia gives in her purse. The man makes Kira remove her belt. I just stand in the back and wait. The orderly looks my way. "You too, miss."

I gesture to my skirt. "I have no pockets to empty."

He points to my boots. "You could be hiding something in those."

"Well, I'm not."

"Either cooperate or have a thorough pat down. It's your choice."

"You wouldn't dare touch me."

He steps out from the desk and stands right in front of me. "Hands to your side and feet apart."

I slowly move my feet out to match stretch a little past my shoulders. The orderly pats down my body. From my shoulders, my hair and my waist. When he gets to my legs, he reaches around in my boot then moves up. He goes up, about to go up my skirt. I grab his wrist and twist it. "Watch your hands!"

He winces then goes back to the desk. I sigh and join the rest. As they walk, my phone begins to buzz. It's my dad. I stop in my tracks. "Hey, Scott you two go ahead. I need to take this."

I go to the waiting room, glaring at the orderly, and take a seat in an empty corner. "Hey, Dad."

"Hey, Scarlett. I just wanted to see how you were doing. Your mother told me about London."

I bring my feet up to my side. "I'm okay and she's telling everyone about that. I don't know if I'm even taking the offer."

"Well, just pass your senior year with great grades and you'll know by then."

"Dad, I have enough credits to graduate a year ago."

I hear him chuckle. "Of course you do. I just thought I would call and make sure you're okay. How do you feel?"

Before I answer, I choke up and tears blur my eyes. "I'm...great, Dad. I just...really miss you."

"I know, sweetie. I miss you, too. I'll be back when I can, I promise."

"Okay, I love you, Dad."

"Love you, too."

I hang up and sit there until I can stop crying. Every time I wipe away my tears, more come. It takes some time. As I'm walking to where Scott is, the door open and the Dread Doctors come in. A gasp slips from my mouth. I start running toward the stairs. I hop down thee stairs at a time, sliding on some railings. I get to the door where I see a security officer, Scott and Kira lying on the floor. She has blue electricity surrounding her body. The lights are flickering and sparking. I bang on the glass."Scott! Scott, they're here!"

He begs the officer to open the door but he doesn't trust me. I keep banging and screaming. I slowly turn and they are right behind me. One of them holds up a huge needle. At that moment, I do what I usually do in situations like this. I scream. I take a deep breath and go to scream but nothing comes out. I cover my mouth and almost cry again.

This brings me back to when Trent attacked me. I couldn't scream for help because of what Kate did to me. Now, the reason is a mystery. They put the needle away but they do press a button. I hear a small buzz go off in my head. Everything around me shakes and my body becomes weak. I fall down and just remember the sound of a scream but not mine. Lydia.

I wake up in a hospital bed. I'm fully clothed but there's a wrap on my head. I slowly sit up and go toward the door. Right when I pass the frame, my strength fails me. My kneels buckle and I feel weak. I slowly walk to the waiting room and sit in the chairs. I run fingers through my hair and look around. Other than me feeling weak, nothing else feels out of the ordinary. The last thing I remember is getting off the phone with my dad. Everything else is a blur. "Scarlett!"

I look over to see Scott approaching. He sits next to me and rubs my head, gently over my bandage. "How does your head feel?" he asks.

"My memory is blurry," I reply, my voice hoarse. "I feel weak. What happened?"

"You don't remember? The Dread Doctors got to you but they just pressed some button and you passed out."

"I really need Deaton to come back because they want something with me."

"Maybe. Stiles thinks we should... Nevermind."

"No, tell me." I see the look on his face. "Scott, I know what I said and I know it put this huge brick wall between us."

"I don't want you to think that I don't want you involved because you're not important. You're more important than me to our pack. You help us figure things out, like when we wanted to know if Theo was telling the truth. I only keep you out to protect you."

"Scott, while you're out protecting me from this, who's protecting you?"

He smiles. "I guess you got me there. That's where I need you."

I grab hold of his hand. "Scott, we are supernatural twins. We feel each other's pain and we know each other better than anyone else, including our own mother. We need each other and we need to stick together if we're going to get through this."

He wraps his arms around me and a tight knot in my stomach eases. Me and Scott are back on good terms and things can be a bit easier for me. I can go back to telling him everything and believing everything he tells me. Stiles picks us up and he plans on dropping us off at home. While I'm sitting in the back, I take out my phone and decide to text Theo:

Theo, things between us can't go any further. What we had in the fourth grade is the only base of our relationship. Things that have happened between us are mistakes and I regret it. You're a cool guy but Liam is the one I need. He was my everything until you came along. I would love to be friends and you can still be apart of my pack. See you in AP :)

After that, I call Liam it rings a few times but it goes straight to voicemail. I usually just hang up but I decide to actually leave a message. "Hey, Liam. I know you're probably still mad at me but, after what has happened over the last day, I've really taken a step back. I messed up, bad, and I realized that. I'm not asking for things to go back to the way it was but I'm willing to start over with you because I don't think I can survive my senior year without you. Just let me know so we can talk. Bye."

Neither Scott or Stiles comment on my voicemail. We stop to get some fast food. When we pull up to my house, I step out the car with my food in on hand and Scott supporting me on the other side. I'm in the kitchen, grabbing an ice pack for my head, when the door bell rings and I notice a note from my mom on the fridge. I snatch the note and walk toward the door. The note is telling me and Scott that she's working late and already has dinner so not to worry about her. When I open the door, I'm surprised to see Liam standing there with his book bag. "Liam, what are you..."

Kira pops from behind him."He called me for a ride. I'm here for Scott."

I point behind me. "He's in his room." She walks right past me and Liam comes in but stays by the doorway. I close the door and lean against it. We stand in awkward silence for I don't know how long. Finally, I sigh and point to the kitchen. "I have some take out, if you're hungry."

He sighs with a genuine smile. "Starving."

I laugh and guide him to the kitchen. We sit at the table and eat in silence for only a bit. "So, things are going to go back to normal?"

I shake my head. "Things in my our lives will never be normal. Like I told Stiles, things are a scale and, right now, things are getting bad and soon things are going to get really bad. I think this time the scale just might tip over. I have the choice to escape it but I don't think I could ever find the courage to do it."

"Wait, what do you mean?"

I take his hand and take him up to my room. Scott and Kira are on the floor, studying for AP. I reach in my jar and pull out my necklace with the cure in it. I sit on the floor and lean against my bed. Liam slowly sits next to me. Kira and Scott put the books to this side. "Only Stiles knows this but someone sent me something that could turn me human again," I start explaining. "It goes hand in hand with the tattoo on my back. It simply just frees me from the hell of the supernatural world. It came to me right before all this started to happen."

"Why didn't you tell me?" Scott asks.

"I didn't see the reason to. I don't plan on using it."

"Maybe we can use it for any other people we find that are like Tracy or Lucas," Kira suggests.

I smile at the idea. I never thought of things that way. Maybe this wasn't meant for me. Maybe it was meant for us to use to help others. "Do you think it'll work?"

"It should."

That night, Kira stays the night in the bed with Scott. Liam stays the night in our guest room. In the middle of the night, I wake up and hop onto my laptop. I hate when I can't sleep or even dream. But I'd rather be awake then stuck between dreaming and reality.
