Sport Discovery (age 5)

Rainbow wasn't into the kind of things most girls her age were into, they were into playing with dolls and playing dress up. Rainbow however was more sporty and liked to play in the mud, and go bug hunting.
She was really good at sports particularly football (soccer.) She was outside in the garden kicking the ball around not realising that her dad was watching.
Bow was watching his daughter dribble the ball and kick it into the goal, she was very impressed with her ability to control the ball.

Bow hothoof: *goes outside* hey dashie?

Rainbow: *turns to see bow standing there* hi daddy! Did you see me score that goal?!

Bow hothoof: *chuckles and strokes rainbows hair* yes baby i did and I was very impressed. Tomorrow there holding tryouts for the 5-7 football team, if you would like to go?

Rainbow: *gasps in excitement* yes please!

Bow hothoof: well ok then!

*at the tryouts*

Bow took rainbow to the local sports centre where the tryouts for the, 5-7 football team was being held. Only 11 children Would be chosen and rainbow noticed that they were all boys except for herself.

Rainbow: *tugs bows hand nervously* daddy? What if they don't pick me because I'm a girl?

Bow hothoof: sweetie it doesn't matter that you're a girl, you're really good at this and I know you can do it.

Rainbow: *relaxing* ok daddy.

Coach: *blows whistle* ok kids come up here so we can see how you do.

The kids all got lined up and the boys soon realised that there was a girl. Most of them snickered at this and rainbow was mortified, not only was she the only girl, but she also seemed to smaller than all of the boys who were trying out.

Boy 1: hey look a girl!

Boy 2: I thought girls weren't supposed to play sports?

Boy 3: *snickers* yeah little girl where are your mummy and daddy, with your doll?

Every one burst out laughing and rainbow started to tear up, she wanted to go back to bow but then the coach said it was time to start.

*during the tryouts*

The kids all did basic ball control and then did some freestyle dribbling. The coach was very impressed with everyone's work particularly rainbows. Tryouts were soon over and it was time to announce the 11 kids who would be on the team. The coach read out 10 names and then he came to the final name, everyone waited in suspense to find out who it was.

Coach: and the final person who will be on the team is... rainbow dash!

Rainbow: *gasps* really?!

Coach: really kid.

Boy 1: but that's not fair! She's a girl!

All boys started murmuring in agreement and the coach soon put a stop to it.

Coach: enough! Just because rainbow is a girl doesn't mean that she can't play sports, and if this behaviour continues I'll rethink some of the other people I've chosen for the team, I will not tolerate bullying of any kind. Is that understood?

All the boys: yes coach!

Coach: good. Now I'd like you to give these consent forms to your parents, they say what days we will be practicing and everything you'll need. Rainbow can you wait here for a minute?

Rainbow: yes coach.

Coach: ok the rest of you off you go.

The boys all left and rainbow was left alone with the coach.

Coach: so rainbow how do you feel about being on the team?

Rainbow: good but why did you choose me? There was loads of boys you could've of picked.

Coach: rainbow it doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl, what matter is hard work and determination and you have both. You're good at this rainbow that's why i chose you.

Rainbow: *tearing up* thank you.

Coach: you're welcome sweetie. Now go on back to your father and don't forget to ask him to sign the form.

*back at home*

Windy whistles: so how did it go?

Rainbow: *rubs up to windy* I made the team mummy!

Windy whistles: *picks rainbow up* that's great baby!

Bow hothoof: yep she was the only girl who tried out.

Rainbow: *sadly* the boys said girls can't play sports.

Bow hothoof: *rubs rainbows back* just remember what the coach said dashie, girls can play as well.

Windy whistles: and me and daddy are very proud of you for trying and getting on the team.

Rainbow: *cheering* ok I'm going to go and practice.

She went outside to practice her football skills as bow and Windy watched from the kitchen window, they were so proud of their daughters sports passion discovery.
