Put To Sleep (age 15)

Warning: Sad story ahead.

Rainbow had, had her dog lupin for 6 years. He'd originally been bought to help rainbow with her anxiety, but he'd become much more than that. He was rainbows best friend (who isn't a human) he was with her through everything, if she was happy, sad, scared or if she just needed someone to listen to her.
Rainbow and lupin were inseparable but that was about to change.

Rainbow: mum! I'm going to take lupin for a walk!

Windy whistles: ok sweetie! Be back for dinner though please!

Rainbow: I will! *calls lupin over to her* lupin! Walkies!

Lupin didn't come running up to rainbow like he usually would, he was usually such an excitable dog especially when it was time for a walk. Rainbow decided to go and look for him, when she found him he was curled up in his bed wheezing. He sounded like he was in pain, so rainbow quickly picked him up (he's a small dog) in his blanket and took him to windy.

Rainbow: *panicking* mum! I think there's something wrong with lupin!

Windy whistles: why sweetheart?

Rainbow: *tearing up* he didn't come to me when I called him and his breathing sounds bad!

Windy whistles: ok let's take him to the vets and see what the problem is.

They got in the car and rainbow held lupin on her lap in his blanket.

Rainbow: *whispers* you'll be ok buddy. *tears up* please be ok.

Windy couldn't speak on the way to the vet, she had a feeling that lupin may be really sick, and she didn't have the heart to tell rainbow that.

*at the vet*

Rainbow and windy we're sat in the waiting room whilst lupin was having an x ray, and rainbow could feel her anxiety's beginning to flare up again. Windy decided she was going to have to speak to rainbow and make sure she was ready for the worst.

Windy whistles: *gently* rainbow, sweetie you do know they might not be able to help him?

Rainbow: *sadly* I know.

The vet called them into the back room where lupin was laid on the bed, still unconscious from the x ray.

The vet: so we've taken some bloods and done an x ray, and we've seen that lupin has a brain tumour.

Windy whistles: *hopeful* can you make him better?

The vet: I'm afraid not. The kindest thing to do would be to put him to sleep.

Rainbow: *getting angry* you mean kill him?!

Windy whistles: rainbow dash come of course she doesn't mean kill him. *cups rainbows cheek and rubs her thumb against it* I know this hard to hear, but it's what's best for lupin.

Rainbow: *sobbing* WHAT ABOUT WHAT'S BEST FOR ME?!

She ran out of the vets office crying her eyes out.

Windy whistles: I'm so sorry.

The vet: *sympathetically* it's no bother I understand that this is hard.

Windy whistles: I'll go and talk to her.

Windy went outside to look for rainbow and she found her sat by a tree, sobbing and clutching a picture of her and lupin to her chest. Windy sat beside rainbow and pulled her into her arms and allowed her distressed daughter to cry on her shoulder.

Rainbow: *hiccuping* I-I c-can't l-lose h-him m-mum!

Windy whistles: *gently runs her fingers through rainbows hair* shhhhh I know baby but he's really sick and he's not going to get better. This is what's best.

Rainbow: *crying* but I don't want him to die!

Windy whistles: *hugs rainbow tighter and rubs her back* shhhhh I know.

*back in the vets office*

Windy had managed to persuade rainbow to do what was best for lupin and they headed back into the back room.

Rainbow: *looks at lupin sadly* will he be in any pain?

The vet: no he won't. It's really quick and painless I promise.

Rainbow: *takes a shaky breath* ok. Can I have a meeting to say goodbye?

The vet: of course, call us when you're ready.

Windy whistles: would you like to stay sweetie?

Rainbow: no thank you mum, I'd like a minute on my own with him.

Windy whistles: ok well call me if you need me.

She kissed rainbows temple and then left the room, so rainbow could say her goodbyes.

*alone with lupin*

Rainbow: *strokes lupins head and starts crying* h-h-hey buddy this isn't any fun is it? I just wanted you to know that you'll always be my best friend. You've been by my side through so much and not once did you complain or judge me. I'm so sorry that I can't help you now, and I'm sorry but this for best. I love you.

She rested her head near lupins and with the little strength he had left, he affectionately nibbled her ear and licked her cheek.

Rainbow: *chuckles softly and strokes lupins head* thanks buddy.

Once rainbow had, had a last cuddle with lupin she was ready for him to go, she called windy and the vet back in. Rainbow stood by the table stroking lupin and sobbing whilst the vet administered the medicine, that would put lupin to sleep.

The vet: *checks lupins heart and then looks at rainbow sadly* he's gone, I'm so sorry.

Windy whistles: thank you.

The vet: I'll leave you alone for a minute.

Rainbow was now crying hysterically in lupins fur but of course he didn't respond. All windy could do was hug rainbow whilst she bawled into lupins fur.
Windy ran her hand through rainbows hair and used the other hand to stroke lupins now lifeless body.

Windy whistles: *whispers* I'm so sorry baby.

Rainbow: *hiccuping* W-what a-am I-I g-going t-to d-do W-without h-him m-mum?!

Windy whistles: shhh I don't know baby, but you did the right thing by him.

Rainbow: *sniffles* y-yeah he's no longer in pain right?

Windy whistles: *kisses rainbows head* that's right baby, he won't be suffering anymore.

Rainbow said one more last goodbye to lupin and her wish left the vets.

*6 months later*

Rainbow had been really struggling with her anxiety since lupin had died. She's gotten a new dog which she'd named Minnie (after professor mcgonagall) who was a really sweet puppy, but was in no way a replacement of lupin. Rainbow had been given lupins ashes and she'd had them pressed into some clay, which was inside a paw shaped locket. She wore the necklace all the time and it was a reminder that lupin would always be with her.

A/N: I cried whilst writing this story.
