ADHD and Dyslexia (age 7)

It was a new day at school and the kids were practicing their handwriting (they were writing their name over and over again) well all except rainbow dash she was just wondering around the classroom not listening to the teacher and refusing to sit down. The teacher miss stargazer eventually had to tell rainbow to come and sit down and do her work.

Miss stargazer: rainbow dash come and sit down and do your handwriting please.

Rainbow: *in a Whiny voice* but I don't like sitting still it's so boring! And writing is hard.

Miss stargazer: *sighs* I know you don't like it but it's needs to be done now please try and concentrate.

After about 10 minutes miss stargazer sent the students outside for break time, rainbow was wondering around the classroom again and she had only done 2 lines of handwriting whilst the rest of the class had all done at least 10.

Miss stargazer: rainbow dash come here please. This isn't enough work and what you have done isn't even spelt correctly. By your age you should be able to spell you name with no trouble ( this how it was spelt "Ranbow dach")

Rainbow: * mumbled* sorry. Can I go out and play now?

Miss stargazer: *sighs* yes go on.

The kids were playing outside when all of a sudden there was a scream, miss stargazer went over to them and she sore fluttershy sitting on the floor clutching her knee with tears streaming down her face. Miss stargazer went over and kneeled next her and realised there was blood on her knee, not a lot but enough to make a scene.

Miss stargazer: oh my what happened?

Fluttershy: *crying* my knee hurts!

Miss stargazer: don't worry we'll get that sorted but can some one tell me what happened?

Twilight: rainbow was running around and she knocked her over, but she just kept running and didn't even apologise.

Miss stargazer: ok thank you twilight. *she sore rainbow still running and jumping about* rainbow dash come here please!

Rainbow: yeah.

Miss stargazer: did you knock fluttershy over?

Rainbow: *ashamed* was an accident.

Miss stargazer: if it was an accident that's fine but I think you need to apologise don't you?

Rainbow: sorry flutters.

Fluttershy: it's ok dashie.

During the conversation in the playground miss stargazer had noticed that rainbow did not stand still and when they went back to the classroom to do some reading and rainbow would still not stop fidgeting. Whilst 7 year olds could be hyperactive miss stargazer was starting to get worried about rainbow. She asked the students to take a turn each at reading part of the story out loud.

Miss stargazer: ok rainbow your turn.

Rainbow: a-an t-th. *that was as far she got before miss stargazer stopped her.*

Miss stargazer: rainbow you can stop there.

She didn't mean to be harsh but it was nearly home time and everyone wanted to get off. After all the kids had been sent out to the playground to meet their parents miss stargazer decided to ask rainbow to stay behind to talk to her.

Miss stargazer: rainbow dash stay here for a minute please.

Rainbow: *tiredly* am I in trouble?

Miss stargazer: no your not in trouble but I want to have a chat with you and your parents about something. Can you stay here while I go and get them?

Rainbow nodded and miss stargazer went to get her parents, she noticed the change in rainbows body language she had refused to sit still all day and now she was half asleep. She was walking around the class room while her teacher and her parents talked about her, not as hyper as she was but she still couldn't sit still.

Windy whistles: so what's the issue?

Miss stargazer: well rainbow seems to be having some issues with her school work, she is struggling to spell her own name which something that she should be able to do by now. She's also having trouble with spelling. *she shows a short spelling test the class had done* these are words which most 7 year olds can spell and rainbow is the only one who seems to be having trouble with them.

Windy whistles: oh dear what shall we do? I don't want my baby getting left behind.

Miss stargazer: it's ok we won't let that happen. I have a feeling rainbow might be dyslexic but she'll have to have tests to confirm it, but I can almost guarantee it.

Bow hothoof: ok and if she does have it how can we help her?

Miss stargazer: we can get a teaching assistant who will work with rainbow 1 to 1 and she can also use audio books to help with her reading.

Windy whistles: ok that sounds good we'll get the test arranged, was there any other problems that you wanted to address?

Miss stargazer: there was another thing I wanted to talk to you about. How is rainbow at home, like does she fidget a lot? I ask this because she's refused to sit still all day and even when she did sit still she couldn't keep her legs still. I've been keeping an eye on her for a while and it's Been happening for quite some time.

Bow hothoof: now that you mention it she has been really hyper at home.

Windy whistles: we just thought she's an hyperactive kid. We have been having trouble getting to sit still and focus do you think there could be another issue?

Miss stargazer: I can't make an official diagnosis but it might worth getting rainbow tested for ADHD.
If she has it there our coping methods we can do with her to keep calm and focused, if not there are medications we can try. You'll have to talk to the doctor about that though.

Rainbow then came over the grown ups and went over to her dad and tried to get up on his lap. He lifted her on his lap.

Rainbow: daddy I want go home.

Bow hothoof: yeah come on then dashie. *he picked her up and carried her to the car*

They said good bye to miss stargazer and then went the car and began the drive home. When they got home they noticed that rainbow had fallen asleep in the back she was clearly exhausted from the days events.

Bow hothoof: should we talk to her what was said?

Windy whistles: maybe let her sleep for a bit then we'll talk to her.

Bow hothoof: yeah you're right.

He carried rainbow into the house and placed her on the sofa, he placed a blanket on top of her and then went into the kitchen to help windy make dinner. After about 10 minutes he heard shouting coming from the living room.

Rainbow: daddy!

Bow hothoof: yes rainbow?

Rainbow: can I play outside?

Bow hothoof: not right now dashie it's time for tea and then a bath. Tomorrow's Saturday so you can play all day.

Rainbow: *in a strop* but I want to play now!

Bow hothoof: well I've said no! Now come and sit down and eat or you'll be grounded!

The family sat down to eat but rainbow kept bouncing in her seat and refused to eat. Bow was getting frustrated and was beginning to lose patience  with his daughter. He was trying to stay calm because of what miss stargazer has told them, but rainbow was pushing her luck.

Bow hothoof: RAINBOW DASH FOR GODS SAKE SIT DOWN AND EAT!

This frightened rainbow and she ran off in tears which caused windy whistles to glare at her husband.

Windy whistles: you didn't have to yell at her like that you know she can't help it.

Bow hothoof: *sighs* I know I was just getting annoyed. I'll go and talk to her.

Bow hothoof: dashie can I come in?

Rainbow: y-yeah.

Bow hothoof: I'm sorry for shouting like that baby but you needed to sit still and eat.

Rainbow: sorry daddy.

Bow hothoof: it's ok baby are hungry? *rainbow shakes her head* are you tired then? This time he got a nod.

Rainbow: can we cuddle daddy?

Bow hothoof: Of course baby. Come here.

He sat on the bed and gently pulled rainbow in his side. They stayed like that in silence for about 5 minutes and then rainbow started to talk.

Rainbow: is there something wrong with me daddy?

Bow hothoof: no baby why would you say that?

Rainbow: because I can't sit still, read or write.

Bow hothoof: there's nothing wrong with you rainbow you just struggle a bit more than the other kids. And as for your fidgeting there are ways we can help you control that as well, but there are some tests you'll have to done ok?

Rainbow: ok. Will the tests hurt daddy?

Bow hothoof: no sweetie, now why don't we call mummy to come in and we can have a movie night.

Rainbow: ok.

Windy then came in and the 3 sat on rainbows bed watching a film. Within 5 minutes of the film starting rainbow had fallen asleep, bow  and windy decided they were going to let her sleep. They both kissed her forehead and let her sleep.

Over the next few weeks rainbow was tested for and diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. She was given extra help in class with her work and was put on medication for her ADHD , her reading and spellings got much better and whilst she still had bad days with the ADHD when the medication didn't always work she was much calmer.
