Losing hope

Reader pov

Mere minutes after my confession, Hawks was already making calls. The first was to the school, the second was to Brittany's parents, and the third was to a friend of his named Enji. From what I'd heard, Brittany's mother, who lived with her here in Musutafu, would come over and fix my voice. After he finished with the calls, he sat me down in the living room and looked me in the eye, "Y/N, ever since that first day you came home and didn't speak, I've known. I knew it was Brittany and that she was messing with the languages you could speak and write."

My E/C eyes widened, "Yak?" (How?)

I was sure he had no clue what I just said, but the questioning tone must've been enough. He smiled and rubbed the back of his head sheepishly, "All I had to do was access your school's quirk database and search for a language-affecting quirk. I then narrowed it down to your class and Brittany popped up."

My head drooped, "Chomu ty meni ne dopomohla?!" (Why didn't you help me?!)

Again, he seemed to guess at what I was saying. He took my S/C hand and held it between both of his, "I had to wait until you told me. I didn't want to betray your trust by digging around behind your back and not letting you handle yourself."

I pulled my hand from his, then threw myself at him and wrapped him in a tight hug. He laughed softly, then held me tightly against him.

~~10 Minutes Later~~

The doorbell rang and Hawks went to answer it, then returned with a tall, blond woman. As with most Americans, she had a large, pointy nose, just like her daughter. She haughtily introduced herself as Karen, then asked to touch my hand to reverse her daughter's quirk. I felt a sickeningly familiar tingle, then a smile broke out on my face, "Thank you, Karen!"

Karen instantly pulled her hand away from me, then wiped it on the hem of her disgustingly patterned floral dress. Her cold, blue eyes coolly regarded me, then she spoke again, "Don't thank me. I'm only here because the one who called me is the number 3 pro hero, Hawks. I don't even know your name."

Since she'd just helped me, I tried to ignore her bitchy attitude, "I'm Y/N L/N! Nice to meet you!"

Karen recoiled as if struck, "What's the horrible girl who bullies my daughter doing in Hawks' house!?!"

I felt like I'd been punched in the stomach. Hawks, with an unusually grim expression, walked up to Karen and laid a hand on her shoulder, "Excuse me, but Y/N is my daughter."

Karen burst out laughing, "What a sick joke! This is clearly an attempt to make me think badly of my precious daughter! Hawks, to think you've stooped this low!"

Swaying slightly on my feet, I stood up. With a hollow expression, I looked up at Karen, "My birth parents are dead. Hawks adopted me a few months ago."

That sure wiped the satisfaction off her face. Shock and horror filled her expression as she bowed down to both of us, achieving a perfect 45 degree angle, and then, with a disgusting grin, straightened up, "My apologies, Orphan-san, I'll be leaving now."

With that chilling statement, she promptly left. I shakily fell back down onto the sofa, open-mouthed with shock. Hawks sighed, "I should've expected that - Come on, let's get you calmed down and we'll head to F/R. After that, we can head to my friend's place. He's got a son about your age, maybe the two of you will get along."

I nodded, already wondering what the mysterious son of Hawks' friend would be like.

~~One Calming Down Session & One F/F Later~~

We pulled up on the side of the road in what I liked to call the 'Rich District,' then Hawks got out of the car. He opened my car door and led me to a traditional-Japanese-style wall with a similarly styled door. He punched a 12 digit code into the pin-lock, then pushed the door open. We stepped through and he closed the door behind us, where it locked with a terrifying series of thumps. Hawks led me along a stone path, taking us through the breathtaking garden and towards the traditional mansion. He slid the front door open, took his shoes off, then motioned for me to do the same. As he closed the door behind us, he called into the house, "Enji! We're here!"

As I pondered why the name 'Enji' seemed so familiar to me, a girl with grey eyes and white  hair with the occasional red streak walked into sight. She waved at us with a smile, "Ah, Hawks! The little one is Y/N, I assume?"

Hawks nodded with a laugh, "Y/N, this is Fuyumi!"

I smiled at Fuyumi, "Hi, my name's Y/N L/N, but I guess you know that already!"

Fuyumi laughed, "Too true - Come on, Father's expecting you."

She then led us through the huge house, only stopping to introduce me to her siblings. As she stopped by a door, she knocked on it, and it instantly slid out. A guy with white hair slid it open and poked his head out, "Hi, I'm Natsuo! I really wish I could talk more, but I've got homework!"

And with that brief statement, he closed his door and Fuyumi led us onward. She stopped at another door, but instead of knocking, she softly called, "Shoto, come on out and introduce yourself!"

I wondered why she'd chosen to verbally signal him instead of just knocking, but that train of thought was derailed when I saw the scar on Shoto's face. I gasped and he recoiled, then began to slide the door shut again. I quickly stuck my foot in the doorframe, "Sorry! I didn't mean to offend you! I was just wondering how something so horrible could've happened to you, that's all!"

One blue and one grey eye looked back at me, and after a moment, Shoto reluctantly opened the door again. I sighed in relief, then returned to Hawks' side. Fuyumi rolled her eyes, "Shoto, stop being so tempermental! Just be happy you got a day off because of Y/N's visit."

Shoto tilted his head to the side, making some white hair spill over onto the red half, "I'm Shoto. Thank you for allowing me to have a day off."

And just like that, he was gone, hidden behind the door again. Fuyumi sighed, "Our father's been training him almost every day since he turned four. He hasn't been allowed to make friends, but I hope that you, being Hawks' daughter and all, might be the exception to that rule."

It was the first time someone had referred to me as Hawks' daughter in a non-malicious way and warmth flowed through my body. I gave Fuyumi a hopeful smile, "I hope I can become his friend too!"

A few minutes later, Fuyumi slid the final door open, revealing none other than the number 2 hero, Endeavor. After picking my jaw up from off the ground, I introduced myself to him, but he waved it away with one hand. Then, he glanced at me, "She's weak as she is right now. If you don't want her to die the moment she lives on her own, you'll let me train her, Hawks."

Hawks shook his head, "I both agree and disagree with you, Enji. Yes, she's weak, but I'll be the one training her, and we'll see if we can organise some joint training with Y/N and Shoto at some point too."

Enji nodded, agreeing to Hawks' terms. Then he dismissed us all from his office. Hawks sighed, "He's much nicer once you get to know him, I think."

~~Monday~~

As I sat down in my seat, I noticed that not only was Brittany not in her seat, but someone else was sitting in it. As the teacher called the role, Brittany's name wasn't on it. I was extremely confused until lunch-time, where Brittany rejoined her gang and found me outside. She tripped me up, then sneered down at me, "That bitch made me move class!"

Then, with a devilish smirk, she took a deep breath, then bellowed into the crowded school-yard, "Y/N'S ADOPTED!!!"
